Being 35. Nhl 95 was the best. Season mode blew my mind.
I remember playing with our friends having a season mode setup with 4 of us playing different teams through the season it was just the best at the time
NHL 95 was a huge step back in gameplay . Sure it had more features , the playability wasn’t near as smooth

95 has literally the same gameplay but with features added again, like fighting.
I’m kinda sad you haven’t mentioned the organ music in this game that’s missing in the current Gen games. Hearing the Brass Bonanza during the game was awesome.
95 was by far my favorite of all. The best music, best movement and play speed. Most new features. It’s unrivaled. I’m 35 years old now, and I still play it on an emulator regularly.
I'm GLAD SOMEONE finally acknowledges this. 95 was better than 94. Create a player, season mode, the actual award ceremony at the end of the year...the perfected one timer with a buddy (man we used to SNIPE on breakaways). I never understand why NHL 95 doesn't get the same love when it improves on what NHL 94 did.
Because 95 gameplay is bad compared to 93 and 94. Too fast and jerky. That's why despite all the new features 94 is revered way more.
Great stuff. All these 16 bit NHL games are GOLD. We have been holding nhl 95 tourneys with friends for 20+ years. Just started playing online as well with this game. Do a full custom season. so fun. Great vid
NHL 95 you can Trade players and first season mode . NHL 95 was the first game i played with every team in season mode 1 team at a time.
Great points ! I was too young and not yet I to a franchise mode back then so just regular gameplay from 94 was fine for me especially not being a hockey fan but looking back now this game is the better of the two
For nhl 93/94 I used to stat track with paper pencil and erasers!! I saw my friends brothers desk and he had a sheet with all the players names and stats tracked on lined paper and i was mind blown
I started of with 93 then onto 94 when it first came out on the Sega Megadrive. My pal and I played hours on 94. At least 4 head to head games a night, 6 nights a week ( Over 1200 games in the year). We both even played solo a lot too. We both took the plunge into 95. Yes it has all extra season features but something was lost in the gameplay, it just wasn't right. Graphically the moving to an even more top down view made the players look too squashed which was a step back from 94. Still played a fair bit of 95 and 96 though, but we both end up going back to 94 and enjoying it way more. I still to this day occasionally play 94 on the PC via emulator or if i can be really bothered to dig out the console and plug in the cartridge all rigged up to the TV!
95 is one of the best ever. No doubt.
Agreed. '95 is one of the 10 best Megadrive / Genesis games of all time for me.
NHL 95 is my sentimental favourite title; I got it as a Christmas gift as a kid.
I think the wildest feature is that it was still in the era where the developers would be super-critical on player ratings, which you never _ever_ see anymore - probably because it's insulting. I mean - Shawn Chambers had a rating of 3 in '94!
NHL 95 is a great game..definitely has a special place in my heart.

Been really enjoying these videos. I'm biased bc NHL 95 was my first hockey game and the reason why I love hockey now. I remember playing it with a buddy, he had sega I had the Super nintendo version. I knew nothing about hockey so I picked the Rangers and cut all the best players from the other teams and signed them to the rangers. Not too long after NHL 95 the Nordiques moved to Colorado and I have been a fan ever since. Will always have a soft spot for the Rangers too bc of this game. NHL 95 is the GOAT and one of my fav games of all time. It was good to see this game again, brought back a lot of good memories.
NHL 95 was awesome. I couldn't afford it back in the day but I rented it an awful lot even multiple weekends in a row. I gurantee with all the money I spent renting this game I just could have bought it multiple times over
I did end up getting nhl 96 though. Great game but I still thought nhl 95 was a bit better in the gameplay department
I totally agree with you. I love the game play 94 but the additions of edit player...season etc adds such HUGE value, so I prefer 95! For me combine the 2 and you'd have the perfect game...and maybe sharpen up the graphics.
My hockey team got together with a bunch if tvs and had tournaments when i was younger, good times

haha same! I played NHLPA 93, NHL 94, but I easily played NHL 95 more than any NHL game until NHL 97 for PlayStation. I actually really liked that one
100%! This came out in my early 20s and we spent so many hours playing franchise mode full seasons with a group of 5-6 friends each playing a team. It was so intense.

I think you should add what happens when you win the cup throughout each game or the games and years where it changes because that was always interesting imo. Great series! Thanks man!

Ya know what's weird, is how little hockey gameplay is in this gameplay review of a hockey game. This season/stats stuff is cool, but I'm a bit Goldilocks when it comes to these 16-bit hockey games. The main thing I care about is the actual feel on the ice. I want the speed/momentum mechanics (and fights) of 93, and then I want 94 when it comes to pretty much everything else. And I really don't like 96-98, so I'm hoping 95 (or the CD version of 94) is the sweet spot for me. But, again--it was cool to see all this, and definitely makes me want to try a deep dive on NHL 95.
94' gets all the adulation but 95' added so much and improved upon it. It's SOR 2 vs SOR3.
95 had end of season awards ceremony as well from memory!!

I remember this being my first NHL game I played when I was a kid.
There actually was a way to play online on your Genesis. Look up X-Band by wrestling with gaming. I used to have it for SNES and Genesis, its a modem you could play NHL 95 with on your console. It was awesome.
Wow. What a flashback. This was the 🐐. Btw you should let us know when rammer came into the ea sports party. Because before him I believe there were game braking changes. After not so much.
This was the first NHL game I really got in to, but I rocked it on PC. 🤘😎

98 was the best for the fact they had all star challenges. Tho 95 was very impressive. Especially Sega Genesis version

I own all these game's til this day on Sega and I play them on the HD Sega with wireless Controllers with 40 built in game's but I have all these NHL game's with there case's.

Dude , NHL95 was better than 94? Of course it was. This was made back in the day when the sequels (for the most part) were better. Soo many awesome feature improvements.
Cliff Ronning was a god in this game and Sleeves, youre not wrong, best game. Technically there was online play. Genesis had something called xband, you could play locally or cross country...through dial up lol my parents hated that thing!
IMO. Coming strictly from the SNES. 95 was a let down visual wise. Yes. Packed with options. But the visuals just didn't work.
Now. 96 97 98

I played all the of the Nhl games as a kis starting with '94, and I agree, I never understood the hype on Nhl 94. Maybe just because it was a lot of peoples' first Nhl game they played
I think it is because playing head to head with fighting and blood was a lot of fun. For playing single player, NHL 95 all day.
The passing, speed and the season breaking bug on the genesis are why I say 94 and even 96 were better than 95.
I had Sega NHL 95 and whenever I would try to play a season, it would be gone when I started the game again.
@@RichV20 all of the batteries were defective in Genesis NHL games.

i had an argument with my brother that 95 was better than 94, he was just loyal cus he and his friends did a giant tourney with a trophy they made and everything, kept it up for over ten years i believe

In my opinion, NHL 94 was better graphically and feel wise. The perfect NHL 95 would’ve been NHL 94 with a season mode and fighting from 93. NHL 94 had highlights from other game with clips , not just a score. NHL 95 had stats compilation and trades but I could care less about that stuff when compared to actual gameplay and fun factor. The blandness of the graphics and the in-game UI being plain ugly. NHL 95 isn’t bad but it’s not the king.

NHL 94 is probably getting hyped because its the only version without fighting. lol Trying to get that out of the sport. I grew up playing 96. I'm planning on picking up 95 though for sure.

I dont like 95 because there´s a bug when you reach 100 points. The game throw your team to the last position and you can never qualify to playoffs

The simple answer as to why 94 is better than 95 is gameplay. You can add seasons and other features to a game, but that doesn't make it a great game. 95, unfortunately, has awful skating and game mechanics which is why 94 is always regarded as the best.

The more pronounced top down view and the extremely fast ganeplay ruined the series for me. I loved it as a kid but I find it unplayable now. The first three were infinitely better
