Salaams. I enjoy listening to your channel. I would argue that whereas mind is indeed an emergent property of brain and the psychological state of an individual can indeed have profound impact on their physical health, claiming that mental illnesses are no different from physical illness and stem from disease processes occurring in the brain is both logically wrong and not paned out by science. For one thing, mental illnesses, by their very definition, are characterized by disorders in behavior, and derived from subjective observation rather than clinical tests. Symptoms of mental illnesses overlap tremendously -- so much so that any given cluster of symptoms can be ascribed any combination of DSM conditions, depending on the different judgment of different examining clinicians. Another issue is that, fundamentally, mental illnesses are non-falsifiable diagnoses, in the sense that no rigorous clinical tests exist to rule in or rule out a particular illness. The other issue is that more often than not, what is mental illness is actually a maladaptive response to psychosocial pressures or perhaps a rational reaction to long-standing intractable circumstances, where insisting that the individual's behavior stems from a 'brain disease' would be biological reductionism par excellence. We are social creatures and our brains are adaptive organs -- and oftentimes our environment plays a tremendous impact on our happiness and wellbeing. If drugs help an individual tolerate and 'cope with' otherwise intolerable circumstances, how is that any better than someone drinking vodka under a fence, save for the fact that society is more tolerant of the individual using antidepressants and benzodiazepines? Finally, even classical psychiatric symptoms such as frank hallucinations and psychoses are hardly unique to psychiatric conditions, and can be found not uncommonly either in the context of neurological disease (Huntington's, Alzheimer's, advanced syphilis, etc) or as a reaction to an infection or a toxin (e.g. high dose prednisone). The difference is that the causative factors for the psychosis can be established with reasonable rigor. In the context of mental illness, I get the strong sense that potential medical causes are rarely went into, and the psychiatrist becomes little else but a 'glorified drug dealer' trying to fix complicated psychosocial problems with pills. Just because vodka (or Prozac) makes someone feel a bit better, doesn't mean that anything has been solved.
