I mean yeah but you gotta allow for some screwing around lol. Also, look at what Shaw used to do, would intentionally post clips of struggling with weight, well under what he could do, with the intent of throwing off competition into underestimating his preparedness, etc. these guys have a lot of time to play mind games, and a very brief time to actually compete.

This is Mitchell Hooper, keep in mind. Its really easy for you or me to load up abs to where we can maintain in the "ideal" rep ranges.
Its really, really, really difficult for someone of Mitch's size and strength level to do direct ab work in this rep range.
Any ab machine he can max out and do 50+ reps on. Go back and watch these clips and realise these crazy 50 rep sets on these machines are the full stack.
For almost anything the failure point will be something else other than the core. For side bends the failure point is his grip. Failing that it will just be stabilising the weight.
I don't disagree with your overall point, its a fantastic point. But wanted to point out why the rep ranges may be higher than expected.

Best ab moves I've tried were all hanging, like toes-to-bar and chinup-kneeups.

Yeah hanging leg raises are the GOAT imo. I'm guessing he probably could go all the way to the bar on them for a few reps, but as with most non-machine based resistance movements the only way to actually be good at them is to do them regularly over a long period of time.

    Hi Mitchell,
I just watched your video where you took on an intense abs workout challenge, incorporating numerous high-intensity abdominal exercises while maintaining your usual training regimen. The experiment clearly demonstrated that these exercises had almost no effect on reducing body fat. I’m sure you already knew this beforehand, but I think it’s fantastic that you made this video.
Your video serves as a perfect example that spot-reducing fat through targeted abs workouts is not effective. When someone tells me they need to train their abs because they've eaten too much, I'll definitely point them to your video. It clearly shows that no matter how hard you work out and how well you know the exercises, targeted fat loss just doesn't work that way.
Thank you for creating such an insightful video!

Don't. Not that you can't get any results that way but it's not the best way. At 68kg your abs can be visible already. Train in the 8-12 reps range, enough load so there's less than 4 reps in reserve, at least 1 day rest between sessions, 8-20 sets per week, with progressive overload. The core is just a muscle like any other, train it like you'd train your biceps/chest/back/triceps.

From everything I've seen and read about BMI online, it is NOT a very trusted form of measurement anymore. The 18-24 range being healthy was put to scale, again, from a Belgian man in 1830 which is substantially different from the average body type anywhere in America or Canada today especially. Take the BMI with a grain of salt - you probably need it after that workout. LMAO ! Maka your back stronger and reduce pain exactly, I powerlift with a thick waist. Now that I am old in my mid-fifties, young people especially hipsters will abusively talk to me like I am an old fool. I deadlifted 500 pounds raw for a double last week at 87.5 percent day weighting 238.5 at 5'9" tall. I have no health issues because of the powerlifting, my doctors feel I will have to many issues wrong with me if I lose weight due to muscle loss. I use very heavy weights on abs. Ab crunch machine feet off the ground with the entire stack and a gym pin with 45s in the front and chrome dumbbells on top of the stack for 15-25 rep sets. I do transverse obliques, psoas, weighted knee ups, advanced side planks sometimes with kettlebells, camel hump planks weighted, Jack Lalaine (superman) pushups weighted, sometimes RDLs, and Roman chair weighted hypers. I do not expect a smaller waist from it lol. PS I have severe lumbar spinal arthritis from injuries suffered before becoming a powerlifter as a teenager but no back pain even in the morning when I get up. I rehabilitated my own back.

"I don't think I'm stepping on stage any time soon". Thanks for the laugh, and maybe not anytime soon, but I know you could give bodybuilding another go if you wanted to. Don't know if you're still working with Stan, but I imagine even if your not currently, you learned a ton about nutrition when you were. I'm still planning on trying to talk you into bodybuilding one more time when the strongman career is over. 😁

I did a lot of core exercises in the past. Now i only do hanging windshield wipers and maybe one other twice a week or so.
But visible abs? Yeah, that‘s mostly body fat percentage and your personal body composition. Are they a goog fitness indicator? I think it‘s more important where your belly fat is. Lots of intra abdominal fat, not good. Abs with stealth technology, not so much of an issue.
For Strongman, well, you guys need mass to move mass. Your body weight being slightly higher than my bench pr and not being on the heavy side…

After the challenge, are you going to continue direct core training? Do you think it's positive sides are worth it even though you experience some DOMS after it that affects your other training?

    • @MellonVegan
      @MellonVegan Месяц назад

If it gets too sore even after doing the movement for a couple weeks, just do a set less. Two less if you need to. Works just the same as any other muscle. Does it recover after a day but you would really benefit from having that muscle be bigger? Add sets. Everything else ready to go again but some muscle is still super sore and won't let you train? Do fewer sets next time. It's not the most satisfying answer bc it means you'll have to find out yourself but it is the correct one.

Man should really know that ab definition is not super resultant from working them out. It's primarily body fat holding *most* people back. Working out your abs isn't going to target fat around your belly.

What? You can't add enough volume to reduce visceral fat if you're in a big calorie surplus. For that you need a calorie deficit diet. And if you want *more visible* abs just train it like any other muscle - 8-12 range, low reps in reserve, enough rest time, with progressive overload. The core is just a muscle like any other.
