      Fun fact: your brain prevents you from using all of your muscular power.
      We only use about a third of the power at any given time, outside of life or death scenarios like the mother lifting the car thing.
      Otherwise, we very easily could rip our muscles from the bone, even someone who doesn't lift.

    Super cool seeing you talk with Dr. Mike, I love the focus on scientific literature and practical result you and Dr. Mike have been bringing to the fitness social media landscape. The discussion of different, health, strength and appearance goals, and how the evidence converges but the paths can differ because of the different end goals is nuance that is frequently missed. Even the psychology aspect, with a full time sedentary job and a family there's only so much willpower I have to push myself in the gym, it is a real element to manage. Absolutely engrossing end to end.

    Injury risk is the #1 reason i train the vast majority of my lifts over 10 reps now. I know that if i'm slightly out of my groove on a rep with a weight that i can do for 12-15, way safer than being out of the groove on a 5-6 RM. There's also the mental fatigue of using weights that are scary - it's a real thing. After i quit powerlifting, i never got worried about lifting anymore, and it was such a massive relief not to be spending the entire day before heavy squat session thinking about being crushed by your 90% of 1RM. I know there's some debate around whether lower reps is more efficient fatigue-wise, but i think the lower mental stress offsets that for me.

      Dude! I agree with you soo much. I’m a former track athlete (thrower). Been lifting for 40 years now (I’m 54) best bench 495 and still can do close to 400. Over the past 6-8 months I’ve been taking my training slowly up to the 8-10 range, then 10-12 range, then to the 12-15 range and lately I’ve been playing with 15-20 range. Muscles feel a like they are getting the same work, tendons/joints feel sooooo much better, psyche is so much better and I’m hungry to lift every day. A couple weeks ago I got talked into a heavy bench day (haven’t benched in a long while). Easily did a triple at 335. My elbows and wrists hurt for days. I’m getting much more out of higher reps, lower loads, maybe a few more sets. Still maintaining strength without even trying, definitely building muscle.

      If you warmed up enough, and you've done your activation exercises before lifting
      There is just as much chance of injuring yourself doing five reps at heavy weight as it is doing 10 rips at a slightly lighter weight

As Dr Mike said, the heavy weight can hurt, and I felt it throughout my 53 year old body every time I finished a hard session. I just shifted to lower weight/higher rep ranges for @ 2 months to see how my body reacts. 2 weeks in and I hate to say it, I like it.

    Mitch's question about progressive overload was a great question and the answer is exactly how I used to train. I was by no means competitive bit was training to build muscle rather than strength, but I'd not track weights over time. I'd just go in and put the same weight as last time on and when I started to get more than 10 reps I'd make a mental note to add a bit more next time. Works just fine.

    Wow, I honestly admit that it was the best talk I have ever seen, in such a short time you covered most of the issues (without going into details) related to "fitness", if someone is a beginner in this industry, I recommend watching and remembering this set of golden rules.

    I like how they acknowledge how much we really don't know. People get big and strong in so many ways so to say one way is better than another is only a matter of preference. This is one of the few non-toxic discussions on fitness youtube lmao

    2:40 That was a great analogy about doing 50 reps and the truck pull. Basically train for how you want to perform on that day.

  • @UltraMagnis
    @UltraMagnis 7 месяцев назад +2

    So bascially. Train how ypu want because the numbers dont really matter. Your body can't do the math on how many reps and sets you do it just understands stimulas. Obviously intensity is important but overall reps and sets, type of training etc, it wont know if you are training for strong man or the body building stage.
    Train hard, eat well, cardio for the body fat. It aint hard at the end of the day. People are always trying to bring deep deep science into these new forms of training and exercises etc and really they are all just spouting complete crap.
    More so if you want you want to be a body builder your genetics matter more so then the amount of food you eat, the drugs you take or how intensly you train. Genetics are king at the end of the day. Drugs obviously help on the recovery side but how you train isnt that important as long as the stimulas is there, you'll gain muscle.
    Very interesting talk guys, loved it.
