As someone who has surfed in Florida, especially near piers, I've never once seen a surfer intentionally touch a fisherman's line. We avoid them like the plague because dudes will have 2-4 lines in the water and we can't see jack.

yea my dad used to "surf" in Galveston when he was younger, he told us when we were kids not to go near any fisherman's lines, just out of respect. I've never surfed but I grew up fishing, I'd find it rather annoying if someone was messing around while I had a line out primarily for both of our safety. I've had a few fishhooks stuck in me and it is not a fun experience.

@@ssgemactv They're from different departments and jurisdictions, they're forced to cover the other areas, but where the crime happened, the officers who's cam we saw was probably the only one on his shift, it sounds like they're completely overwhelmed in terms of not finding anyone to hire, hell here in my town we're down to 50% of what's required just to run the shifts normally, we only have 5 officers for 175k people over night, its insanity. Their response time has jumped to 19 minutes.
Some people forget what it’s like to be kids. I’m 26 and when I look at little kids or young pre-teens/teens doing stuff (whether it’s ignorant or just fun) sometimes I’m thinking like “damn kids” .. but also feel nostalgic because I know what it’s like to be that young, just having fun. I'll be honest with you bro, I'm not defending hitting kids but I used to live here, I surfed and fished here and most of the younger kids will intentionally swim in your lines. I've had them go under the pier which is sketchy considering all the sharp barnacles they narrowly go past, and they say sorry to the people fishing but keep doing it so again I'm not surprised someone snapped. Best spot to surf is just south of the pier by maybe 50+ feet which is enough room for people casting lines to have space so im honestly saying the kids really are being dicks here. Most everyone here young and old is entitled and needlessly quick to confrontation so it's strange it hasn't happened more.

It may be because of fear of retaliation but that's what happens in gangs, which they're supposed to not become so something needs to be done. I suspect the kids on surfboards started it by not apologizing when they drifted into the fishing lines, then the fishermen told the kids to get out the way, then the kids became lippy towards the fishermen, and then the fishermen overreacted.
Those kids are usually regulars at the beach.. they know people are fishing off the pier. They have an entire beach to themselves but they don't want to give some room to the fishermen who are confined to fishing from a pier. That's not being mature. They're being ignorant and acting innocent.

It's true, but they would have bonded out in a day or so most likely any way so it's really not till the trial that their punishment will be decided. At least they were trespassed from the location so no one else needs to worry about them in that location.
One of the weirdest things to me is that the victim needs to press charges for something to happen. In my country (the Netherlands) no victim needs to press charges. If you do something wrong to somebody, you get presecuted bu the justice system, no matter the opinion of the victim.
It should be absolutely that way here but it unfortunately isn't. A lot of domestic violence goes under the radar because victims are too scared to press charges. I love my country, but HATE that part of our legal system

As a surfer you definitely want to stay well clear of fishing lines. They can do some serious damage, if you wipe out in big swell and are snagged in a fishing line, not good.
The problem is there are so few areas that municipalities allow surfers to surf, it forces surfers into marginal zones such as this one. So its not the kids fault even if he had drifted to close too the pier. In Long Island NY the areas are so few that there would have been several surfers, and they would have stomped those 3 broke down lard buckets as soon they touched the kid. Hopefully the local cop remembers them and enforces the no tresspass order to keep those flatulent dead beats away.

The cops repeatedly commented that they didn't have the man power to arrest the men at the moment, and that it had been their 4th arrest/incident of the day. What's ridiculous is the lack of cops on the beat. For all we know, that department is super small.. so to take 1 or 2 cops off the beat... would be more hazardous than to drag those fat ass bullies into jail. They'll get theirs eventually.
@@mikelachey824 I've been fishing up and down the east coast of Florida since the early 90s and what I learned early on was to stay away from piers, too many people on them, and too many Karens. We always had our own isolated spots where we could fish all night long, camp, and stay away from dudes like these. Most surfers that we met were always cool, but they also kept to themselves.

The charges against the guys should be dropped. It sounds like the kid provoked the incident. The kid and their buddies are being brats about this when the surfer kid is the root cause to the incident.

They are trying to apply the law justly. If you over charge a Judge or jury is less likely to convict. Charging them under child abuse laws would be much more difficult and battery seems to be the more appropriate charge in this case. Most of us are very friendly and understanding of others around It is annoying when someone kayaks into your lines or something, but I’ve never fished around surfers. I fish too, a lot of the time from kayaks. Tangled lines is just part of the deal a lot of the time. Its annoying but its just part of the sport. Id think with surfing there is a lack of control since you're just riding the waves so Id be even more forgiving, Id just more or less be scared of someone getting tangled up in my line and getting themselves hurt or drowned.
I literally work here as lifeguard on the beach we have this problem the surfers and fishers go at it 24/7 there’s a 150 mark that your not allowed to surf within it but we cut the local surfers some slack mostly bc we know that they can navigate through the lines and waters the problem happens is when the fishermen purposely throw the lines,weights,hooks,nets, dead fish at the surfers and start shit for no reason. Now ofc these surfers are gonna be jerks but all my years of working there not one surfers has messed with a fisherman unless the fisherman starts shit

They pay no mind to people on bikes but would come after us. Always with “a lady said you ran her off the sidewalk.” Then they would threaten us. We had plenty of skate parks in the city. Philadelphia is huge and we have some of the best parks in the world.

For those who say, "why don't they just surf somewhere else?" Surfers congregate around piers and jetties because these structures tend to allow for the buildup of sandbars which helps to create bigger, better waves. Also, the rip current that runs along side of the structure (the same rip that normal people are scared to death of) helps surfers to easily paddle out to the lineup with little effort. That same rip current will pull a person close to the structure before releasing you in deeper water. The open beaches (lacking structures) may have waves, but they are most often far inferior to the waves near structures. As a surfer, I can tell you for certain, we do our very best to avoid fishing lines. We don't want to get hooked; plus it messes up our ride. Btw, many of us surfers like to fish too. Let's all just try to work together.
Those fisherman paid a fee to the state to become licensed to fish. It is stupid and dangerous to be surfing in amongst the fishing lines. The surfer could easily have been snagged and seriously injured by a fish hook, had he caught a line. The fishermen had a legal right to fish there. Not sure about this location, but they also may have had to pay to use the fishing pier. The surfer was unnecessarily interfering with legal fishing which is in most states a criminal offense by itself!

Yeah, they didn't even get cited for assault..I had to rewind the video in case I missed it. He just trespassed them.. I reckon he didn't arrest bcoz he didn't wanna get hemmed up at the station bcoz he was the only cop on scene.. absolutely ridiculous. These kids showed up wanting to surf up beside the pier because Florida has shitty waves and they break better beside the pier , but the fishermen were already there fishing . So the kids came up with a scheme to get the fishermen run off , they went out and started messing with their lines . Which started the altercation than verbally antagonized the fisherman knowing this would make the altercation continue at the boardwalk where they already had a kid ready to film only the other sides bad behavior and not their own . It worked flawlessly , they played the victim quite well and got the pier to themselves even though the fishermen were there first . These kids do this same little show all up and down the coast . They do it because it works quite well . Just look at all the people on here who fell for it hook line and sinker ( no pun intended ) . They had the cops convinced the moment they arrived . But thats because the cops failed to clue in on the fact that the video only showed the other sides bad behavior , the kid actually struck the first blow , the kids should have been cited for criminal mischief for messing with the fisherman's fishing lines and trespassed for the day . On piers its first come first serve and they had no right to interfere with the fishing already going on . They should have just waited until the guys were done fishing or they should have gotten their first .

A 50-60 year problem. In the 70's a fisherman threw his line at the wrong surfer. Big John Haskins went up onto the Bay County Pier and threw the fisherman in the water. RIP John, my surfing friend of many years.
The two who actually hit the kid was charged with assault and battery! That have been taken down to misdemeanor battery charges, and they are still in the court process. But all four involved were trespassed and can never go back to the pier if they’re caught they will be arrested!

You are missing something, instead of taking them into jail on the spot, he sent it to the state and then the state will file or not file charges. Basically, all he did was skip the part where they spend a night in jail and just bail out. As he stated, it was a officer safety issue, he didn’t want it to possibly turn violent for what will be a misdemeanor assault.

35 years ago I was surfing in my hometown. These guys came to our pier and started using compound bows and arrows with fishing string on them to spear fish. They kept shooting within feet of the wrong batch of guys and run out of town.
This goes to show, it's not always about who's right or wrong. Sometimes it's about judging a situation, being the bigger person and rising above it which these guys weren't smart enough to do smh.

On behalf of fisherman we are all not like this. If I see kids wanting to play in the water, kayak, throw rocks or whatever, I simply find a new spot or ask nicely if I can fish there and they could stay a little bit away. Now if it’s a truly designated fishing pier and this happens to you then just contact a wildlife department and see what their harassment laws are for outdoorsman. A couple of phone calls or a change in fishing spots could have avoided all of this. Tight lines my friends 🎣

Flagler Beach is one of the nicest towns in Florida not VERY DANGEROUS at all. It's a very small town, pretty typical staffing levels for the size of the community.

As someone who has surfed in Florida, especially near piers, I've never once seen a surfer intentionally touch a fisherman's line. We avoid them like the plague because dudes will have 2-4 lines in the water and we can't see jack.

yea my dad used to "surf" in Galveston when he was younger, he told us when we were kids not to go near any fisherman's lines, just out of respect. I've never surfed but I grew up fishing, I'd find it rather annoying if someone was messing around while I had a line out primarily for both of our safety. I've had a few fishhooks stuck in me and it is not a fun experience.

@@ssgemactv They're from different departments and jurisdictions, they're forced to cover the other areas, but where the crime happened, the officers who's cam we saw was probably the only one on his shift, it sounds like they're completely overwhelmed in terms of not finding anyone to hire, hell here in my town we're down to 50% of what's required just to run the shifts normally, we only have 5 officers for 175k people over night, its insanity. Their response time has jumped to 19 minutes.

I'll be honest with you bro, I'm not defending hitting kids but I used to live here, I surfed and fished here and most of the younger kids will intentionally swim in your lines. I've had them go under the pier which is sketchy considering all the sharp barnacles they narrowly go past, and they say sorry to the people fishing but keep doing it so again I'm not surprised someone snapped. Best spot to surf is just south of the pier by maybe 50+ feet which is enough room for people casting lines to have space so im honestly saying the kids really are being dicks here. Most everyone here young and old is entitled and needlessly quick to confrontation so it's strange it hasn't happened more.

It may be because of fear of retaliation but that's what happens in gangs, which they're supposed to not become so something needs to be done. At the end of the day they're human beings but that means in the good and bad sense ie taking advantage of power especially in large groups with a lot of it. It makes people not trust them and therefore not want to become them.
They have to write a police report for each arrest they make which can be very time consuming

I suspect the kids on surfboards started it by not apologizing when they drifted into the fishing lines, then the fishermen told the kids to get out the way, then the kids became lippy towards the fishermen, and then the fishermen overreacted.
Those kids are usually regulars at the beach.. they know people are fishing off the pier. They have an entire beach to themselves but they don't want to give some room to the fishermen who are confined to fishing from a pier. That's not being mature. They're being ignorant and acting innocent.

It's true, but they would have bonded out in a day or so most likely any way so it's really not till the trial that their punishment will be decided. At least they were trespassed from the location so no one else needs to worry about them in that location.

One of the weirdest things to me is that the victim needs to press charges for something to happen. In my country (the Netherlands) no victim needs to press charges. If you do something wrong to somebody, you get presecuted bu the justice system, no matter the opinion of the victim.
It should be absolutely that way here but it unfortunately isn't. A lot of domestic violence goes under the radar because victims are too scared to press charges. I love my country, but HATE that part of our legal system

The problem is there are so few areas that municipalities allow surfers to surf, it forces surfers into marginal zones such as this one. So its not the kids fault even if he had drifted to close too the pier. In Long Island NY the areas are so few that there would have been several surfers, and they would have stomped those 3 broke down lard buckets as soon they touched the kid. Hopefully the local cop remembers them and enforces the no tresspass order to keep those flatulent dead beats away.

We always had our own isolated spots where we could fish all night long, camp, and stay away from dudes like these. Most surfers that we met were always cool, but they also kept to themselves.

The charges against the guys should be dropped. It sounds like the kid provoked the incident. The kid and their buddies are being brats about this when the surfer kid is the root cause to the incident.

They are trying to apply the law justly. If you over charge a Judge or jury is less likely to convict. Charging them under child abuse laws would be much more difficult and battery seems to be the more appropriate charge in this case. I fish too, a lot of the time from kayaks. Tangled lines is just part of the deal a lot of the time. Its annoying but its just part of the sport. Id think with surfing there is a lack of control since you're just riding the waves so Id be even more forgiving, Id just more or less be scared of someone getting tangled up in my line and getting themselves hurt or drowned.
I literally work here as lifeguard on the beach we have this problem the surfers and fishers go at it 24/7 there’s a 150 mark that your not allowed to surf within it but we cut the local surfers some slack mostly bc we know that they can navigate through the lines and waters the problem happens is when the fishermen purposely throw the lines,weights,hooks,nets, dead fish at the surfers and start shit for no reason. Now ofc these surfers are gonna be jerks but all my years of working there not one surfers has messed with a fisherman unless the fisherman starts shit

For those who say, "why don't they just surf somewhere else?"
Surfers congregate around piers and jetties because these structures tend to allow for the buildup of sandbars which helps to create bigger, better waves. Also, the rip current that runs along side of the structure (the same rip that normal people are scared to death of) helps surfers to easily paddle out to the lineup with little effort. That same rip current will pull a person close to the structure before releasing you in deeper water.
The open beaches (lacking structures) may have waves, but they are most often far inferior to the waves near structures.
As a surfer, I can tell you for certain, we do our very best to avoid fishing lines. We don't want to get hooked; plus it messes up our ride. Btw, many of us surfers like to fish too. Let's all just try to work together.
There are also signs that say no surfing near piers because of fishermen.
Those fisherman paid a fee to the state to become licensed to fish. It is stupid and dangerous to be surfing in amongst the fishing lines. The surfer could easily have been snagged and seriously injured by a fish hook, had he caught a line. The fishermen had a legal right to fish there. Not sure about this location, but they also may have had to pay to use the fishing pier. The surfer was unnecessarily interfering with legal fishing which is in most states a criminal offense by itself!

Not really you guys don't I'm on both sides but I've seen ae33hole surfers surf by the pier even though they have miles of beach to surf. The fishermen were wrong no doubt I would have just went somewhere else not worth it
I don't know what state this is in but isn't it against the law harass/interfere with people fishing? Not saying what the tuff guys did was right but I've had a lot of run-in s with spoiled brat teens who think they can do whatever they want whenever they want to whoever they want.

The dude did get arrested though and charged, currently awaiting trial. Just had to wait till they had the manpower. Shit like this happens when everywhere’s understaffed🤷🏻♂️ yet everyone wants to defund the police and for some reason don’t think more situations like this will happen and worse

Yeah, they didn't even get cited for assault..I had to rewind the video in case I missed it. He just trespassed them.. I reckon he didn't arrest bcoz he didn't wanna get hemmed up at the station bcoz he was the only cop on scene.. absolutely ridiculous. I'm actually gonna put in a public information request to make sure.but no arrests or citations for assault in the video.. very dodgy cop behavior

These kids showed up wanting to surf up beside the pier because Florida has shitty waves and they break better beside the pier , but the fishermen were already there fishing . So the kids came up with a scheme to get the fishermen run off , they went out and started messing with their lines . Which started the altercation than verbally antagonized the fisherman knowing this would make the altercation continue at the boardwalk where they already had a kid ready to film only the other sides bad behavior and not their own . It worked flawlessly , they played the victim quite well and got the pier to themselves even though the fishermen were there first . These kids do this same little show all up and down the coast . They do it because it works quite well . Just look at all the people on here who fell for it hook line and sinker ( no pun intended ) . They had the cops convinced the moment they arrived . But thats because the cops failed to clue in on the fact that the video only showed the other sides bad behavior , the kid actually struck the first blow , the kids should have been cited for criminal mischief for messing with the fisherman's fishing lines and trespassed for the day . On piers its first come first serve and they had no right to interfere with the fishing already going on . They should have just waited until the guys were done fishing or they should have gotten their first .

A 50-60 year problem. In the 70's a fisherman threw his line at the wrong surfer. Big John Haskins went up onto the Bay County Pier and threw the fisherman in the water. RIP John, my surfing friend of many years.

The two who actually hit the kid was charged with assault and battery! That have been taken down to misdemeanor battery charges, and they are still in the court process. But all four involved were trespassed and can never go back to the pier if they’re caught they will be arrested!

You are missing something, instead of taking them into jail on the spot, he sent it to the state and then the state will file or not file charges. Basically, all he did was skip the part where they spend a night in jail and just bail out. 35 years ago I was surfing in my hometown. These guys came to our pier and started using compound bows and arrows with fishing string on them to spear fish. They kept shooting within feet of the wrong batch of guys and run out of town.
This goes to show, it's not always about who's right or wrong. Sometimes it's about judging a situation, being the bigger person and rising above it which these guys weren't smart enough to do smh.

On behalf of fisherman we are all not like this. If I see kids wanting to play in the water, kayak, throw rocks or whatever, I simply find a new spot or ask nicely if I can fish there and they could stay a little bit away. Now if it’s a truly designated fishing pier and this happens to you then just contact a wildlife department and see what their harassment laws are for outdoorsman. A couple of phone calls or a change in fishing spots could have avoided all of this. Tight lines my friends 🎣

Flagler Beach is one of the nicest towns in Florida not VERY DANGEROUS at all. It's a very small town, pretty typical staffing levels for the size of the community.
