Hands down the best walk thru for setting up my kayak. My photographer roots noted the soft box and your experience with audio. All the tips are time savers worth every penny.
I have been watching your channel for a while now and love it. I am a school teacher with summers off and I think this would be fun hobby for weekends, summers, Christmas break, spring break, etc.... I order my Hobie kayak next week and it should arrive from California in June... Thanks for all the great tips over the years.
Been following you since I got my compass and you posted your compass video setup. Your content is always getting better, keep it up man! You deserve way more followers.
I agree, but please know it wasn't my idea by any means. When I added the second camera I tried to use Davinci Resolve to align the footage. It did an ok job about 50% of the time and it took forever for me to edit any multicam scenes. I was looking at how to improve the accuracy. So I hit the books (meaning Google and RUclips) and discovered the whole "clapperboard" methodology. Like you, I agree, it's genius and it works extremely well. So much so that I don't use DR to align my footage at all anymore.
Another great video. I think I have watched all your posted videos, some multiple times! It has been fun to watch you progress and the quality is much improved. Thank you for taking the time to inform and entertain us. Hope to see you on the marsh soon.
Very well done video and not just because you mentioned YOLOtek gear. :) Great information, solid video, good audio, easy to understand, honest and helpful info. Keep these up! #AlwaysBeRecording #YOLOteking
Glad it helped! It took several iterations and some wasted time and expense to get to this point so I hope it will help you avoid that headache! Tight lines!
New subscriber here! I just came across your channel with this setup video. Very impressed with your knowledge and great presentation skills. I will make good use of the info with my new Hero8 and kayak fishing adventures. Like an earlier post mentioned, I picked up Mack's earplug silicon putty for splash protection for my GoPro, for less than $3. Same silicon as the much more expense product. Again, great job and thank you.
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing. I too picked up those earplugs, it's a great tip. I'm still using what I have until it runs out but then I'll give those a try. I'm glad the video helped you out!
Nice setup and very informative video. I struggle a lot filming good footage from my kayak. It's not easy on such a small confined space. I also like the drone footage in your other videos. Do you hand launch and land your drone on the kayak?
Thanks. I agree with you that filming from a kayak poses some interesting challenges. Yes, I hand launch my drone.....there's pretty much no other way to do it.
@@KayakFishingAddict haha yeah, I've been hand launching and landing too. For sure get's the old heart pumping,, especially when there's a bit of a swell running and you can't hold your hand in one place. I usually put all my electronics in a dry bag when launching and landing in swelly areas. But the other day I got pushed over by a big wave while beach landing. Still had one Gopro connected to a powerbank on the railblaza stick out front. Well, that was the end of this Gopro. But like you said, that is the risk we need to take if we want to film some reasonable footage from a yak.
@@Fishingreminder Yep, it gets risky. Here's my brand new drone on the 2nd time out - ruclips.net/video/2agT2s8Rxl8/видео.html - I'm glad I had the insurance! I also have one GoPro with a fried USB port after an incident like yours....it still runs on batteries so it's my underwater cam.
Thanks for the idea. I moved this same setup to my new kayak - My New Fishing Kayak is a 2022 Hobie Outback! ruclips.net/video/jhB_oeiYprQ/видео.html - and it’s still working like a champ so I haven’t upgraded anything. The only thing at the moment that I’m contemplating is the new GoPro Hero 11 Black. That camera has 10-bit color…which is the only reason to upgrade from the GoPro Hero 8 Black cameras IMHO.
Ron...Can I stop and highlight something in looping mode with voice activation. I want to put a GoPro Hero 8 behind me on my kayak and don't have a smart remote. Thanks for a great video!
Sorry Chris. I can't use looping mode for the resolution I'm targeting so I don't use it and I'm not aware of what you can/can't do with it. You should be able to set a highlight with your voice via "GoPro Highlight", but again it may or may not work in looping mode. My guess is you'd have to set the higlight prior to stopping the loop though.
Very good video and educational...I want to mount my GoPro the same as you so that it can be charged from an external power source. What side cover did you put on the camera that let you connect it?
Thanks. All of the filming parts I use are here - kayakfishingaddict.com/product-category/filming/ - you'll need the Ulanzi part there as well as the Mack's ear plugs to seal it.
Yes, the battery itself gets hot when in use, so removing it helps a great deal. Yes, I use the following two components to secure the power cable to the camera: kayakfishingaddict.com/product/ulanzi-gopro-hero8-black-battery-cover/ kayakfishingaddict.com/product/macks-silicone-ear-camera-plugs/
I did look, but for some reason that I don't recall, I eliminated the option quickly. I'm not sure but does that camera support an external microphone while being powered externally without a battery? I did look at the Insta360 R and had an email exchange with one of their engineers. Unfortunately, that camera does not fit my action camera requirements either. Please, let me explain... Besides the standard resolution and frame rates and quality image standards, which most of the cameras meet, I also require: 1. Runs without batteries powered by external power bank 2. Has a remote to control at least two cameras simultaneously 3. Can mark a video for saving or highlighting in some way. Preferably works from remote against two cameras. 4. Supports external mics and interleaves the audio from the external mic with the video while on external power only (no batteries) 5. Preferably supports a cold/hot shoe to mount an external mic accessory 6. Preferably works with a bluetooth lavalier mic 7. Preferably works without interference with the Rode Wireless Go and DJI Drone 8. Captures up to 4K60 or higher (120, 240 fps) with stabilization in camera; 2.7K at 24fps will be normal. 9. microSD 128gb minimum 10. Preferably has looping overwrite capability at 2.7K 24fps The GoPro Hero8 barely fits the bill, but as I mention in the video it doesn't meet #10 and only partially supports #3. The GoPro Hero7 has too many bugs that cause it not to meet #4, #7, #10, and only partially supports #3. The Insta360 R does not meet #1, #2, only partial #3 and not with the remote, #4....not sure but I think it fell flat on a few others as well. The DJI Osmo action....I don't recall but I think #4 was the issue. Hope that helps.
Hi Rob, happy to discuss. You can use the about page to get an email address or go to www.KayakFishingAddict.com and use the contact page there. But in case anyone else is reading this, the short answer is that I currently use five cameras - 2 GoPro's you see in this video, 1 hand held GoPro, an iPhone from time to time, and a DJI Mavic Mini (v1). In more recent videos the underwater shots and broll shots are done with the handheld GoPro. As of today, all GoPro's are Hero8 Blacks. I also, in my most recent videos, shoot ProTune flat color. All cameras, including drone, are set to the same color temp. Davinci Resolve is the editing program I use and I color grade myself. I'm learning as I go; it's an art and a science which I like so I'll continue to get better with practice and knowledge.
So have you looked into the Ulanzi G8-7 replacement door for your GoPro Hero? It would reduce the opening that would be exposed to water splash? Curious to see if you think it would eliminate the need for the putty?
Hi Wally. I forgot to mention that in the video but yes, I use the Ulanzi G8-7 door on my front camera. It's the best replacement right now and you need to cover that battery compartment so that water doesn't splash in from the left side of the boat. I do use the putty with it. The putty fills in the crack on the top where the door connects and it seals around the USBc cable plug. I think the putty is essential to keeping rain and splash water out. The only flaw in the Ulanzi G8-7 door is the clasp on the top. The original GoPro Hero8 Black door clasp has a metal insert that makes it really hold tight. The Ulanzi door uses a plastic clasp that pops off when you open the compartment. That said, it works for me to allow for external power.
holy crap that s list of items...lol....I'm curious if you have had any issues with those cables at all. I hear some stories about cable melt...etc.etc. I"m currently just starting to video my kayak fishing and like you I'm already tied of power on / power off and looking to power them all day with large microSD cards in them. I have a powerbox with 2.1 out and I have a ravpower with 1 and 2 V out. for sure will power these babies all day :) But I don't want issues.
I haven't had any issues with these cables. If you see the link int he description and read the reviews, you'll see how good others are finding them too. I've looked for ways to try to get efficient on things so that I can optimize my time on the water fishing. I'm not quite where I want to be yet, but hey, it's a journey.. That whole battery swap every 45 minutes, and sometimes even worse when one camera burns through a battery faster than another, or when one or more cameras dies during a catch.....it gets old quick! I hope this video helps you.
Hey brother wanted to give you a possible a hack to save money. That silicone putty looks like and seems to be the same material as water proof silicone putty ear plugs. Walmart sells a pack of 6 that look the same size as you showed for 3.50 much cheaper. Not 100 percent sure it’s as good but I started using the ear plug putty after watching this video and seeing the stuff you use. Seems to do well so far but try it and see if it’s a good way to save money
Hi Gary, thanks for the hack. I did pick up a pack of "Mack's Pillow Soft Silicone Putty Earplugs" after an earlier comment on it. I haven't run out of the Yolotek ones I discuss in the video yet, but as soon as I do I'm going to give that a try....it's a great idea and a cheaper solution for what looks to be the same stuff. Oh, and BTW, it's also in my Amazon shop in the Audio/Video section - gear.KayakFishingAddict.com.
Wow, this was such a good video. I'm not a kayaker but I'm going to take some of your advice here for recording 4x4 offroading. Super useful, thank you!
I just want to thank you for mentioning men and women in the video . My wife and daughter doesn’t like when they say men only because the sport is for both. Thank you for the great info. God bless

The part about clapping is genius. I'm not a pro-editor but in theory it sounds like a very easy way to do it.
