      @pantherablaxxx9930 4 года назад +9

      @@jettlaxholly Listen, some athletes from whom people, especially their coaches, have high expectations tend to quit after achieving less than modest results. But other tell themselves "I WILL do better in the next Olympics!" and take their "failure" as a learning lesson. That's what happened to these athletes who are now well-known. That's the meaning of my post.

    • @SwaggerChiick1
      @SwaggerChiick1 4 года назад +3

      @@pantherablaxxx9930 I know EXACTLY what you meant!! Whenever I (and many others) fail at something when they expected to do well, the "maybe I should give up" thoughts start creeping in. These champions obviously didn't do that and that's the difference between them and "average" competitors.

    I should add Jan Zelesny of Czech Republic, WR holder in men's Javelin throw. His debut was at 1988 Olympic in which he won silver. He actually had very good chance to win the gold, as he was leading with 83.46m ahead of two Finnish athlete : Seppo Raty and Tapio Korjus. But at the last throw, Korjus did 84.28m, while Zelesny had 84.12m, preventing the legend to win his 1st gold.
    In the next 3 Olympics, he was unbeaten.
    This channel should do a video on this legend of Javelin.

    I would add :
    1. Peter Van den Hoogenband of Netherland - 100m and 200m freestyle at 1996. He finished 4th in both races. Four years later he beat Alexander The Great Popov to win the gold in 100m free. He also won 200m free, beating home favorite Ian Thorpe.
    2. Inge de Bruijn of Netherland - 100m and 4x100m freestyle at 1992. She finished 8th in both races. In Sydney 2000, he won 3 golds : 50m free, 100m free and 100m butterly, with WR in all these races.
    3. Tom Malchow of USA - 200m butterfly at 1996. He won silver at that race behind Dennis Pankratov. Four years later he won gold in the race when Michael Phelps did his debut. Pankratov actually did very well, but ran out of gas in the last 50m, that he even was caught by teenager Phelps.
    4. Mark Tewksbury of Canada - 100m backstroke at 1988. He was there in the race when Daichi Suzuki of Japan made a big upset, beating the favorite David Berkoff (WR holder).
    Four years later, he won gold beating the favorite Jeff Rouse (WR holder) and David Berkoff.
    5. Linford Christie of GBR- 100m at 1988 Olympic. He won silver behind Carl Lewis, after Ben Johnson was disqualified for doping. Four years later he won gold.

      Rumyana Neykova - Bulgarian rower won her gold medal in her fifth Olympics in Beijing, after winning silver in Sidney and bronze in Athens (35 years). Valentin Yordanov - the wrestler of the 20th century - was 36 years when he won in Atlanta. Pretty amazing.
