A tip from Brad Mehldau brought me here...Just incredible
Wow. if the world was aright, this would have about a billion views.
The world has brought forth this amazing pianist and we are fortunate to be blessed with this music!
Listening to Mr Fortner one could - almost - forget for a little while there's war outside. Sad times indeed while such beauty is given to mankind ... And THANK you, Mr Fortner, for this musical journey.
Quirky, original, and chops to top it off. Sullivan Fortner is, imho, one of the best, if not, the best jazz pianist of his generation.
what he's doing here is highly original and personal, rhythmically very interesting and layered, like two pianists conversing
Sullivan was the regular pianist in trumpeter Roy Hargrove's band from 2010 to 2017,
Hearing this young man for the first time was really a blast. made my day.
So much love for Sully🤟❤️🎹
That was masterful! Bravo 👏🏾
Beautiful!
He's a VERY interesting player. I first heard him touring as a duo with Cecile McLorin Salvant, whose name was on the bill. She could have stayed home -- he blew me away, and her affected performance turned me off. There are far more interesting young singers around.
As to the production on this video -- the use of a long lens for closeups fills the screen, but makes the grand piano look like a toy, and the coincident mic pair gives it a one-dimensional quality. I've recorded a lot of jazz piano, and while I owned one of the world's finest stereo mics, an AKG C24, spaced mics are far superior. The guy doing Emmet Cohen's sets from his apartment gets great piano sound from spaced mics over the hammers.
