My grandmother was from Ukraine. My great-grandfather owned an 80-acre farm. The Soviet Union took the farm away and left my great-grandfather the farm house and a small plot of land around it. It was a family farm passed down from generation to generation. One day my grandmother moved to America. She walked the long walk from her home to the port where the ship to America was located. She waited in line to board the boat legally. She walked up the plank and was about to step on the boat, but the kgb stopped her. At 15 she was too young to board the boat without a parent. They turned her away. She stood at the rail staring at the boat. Then she saw a person dive into the water and swim to the boat. They tapped on the round window at the bottom of the ship. Someone inside opened the window and helped them in. So, my grandmother did the same thing. She was a stole-away for 3 or 4 months. She could not stand up or even sit up. People were packed into the bottom of the ship like sardines. She lay flat the whole trip. Some people around her died. and when she was leaving the ship the kgb shot at her but they missed. She always said to never trust Russian government. Sorry for the long post. Please stay safe.

I am old enough that I met a few ship jumpers and defectors back in I think the late 80's. What I don't understand is why on earth anyone still lives in Russia. Many people went through great hardship to leave, like your ancestors, and since it's been easier to leave it seems like people haven't. And the excuse I hear is well they couldn't get visas. Given what previous generations went through to get out that excuse doesn't fly. I am not a mean person but I reserve judgement on the people who are still living in Russia.

People from Ukraine left because their homes were blown up, destroyed by rockets, bombs, artillery. Because their towns were occupied and burned down, because russian soldiers are killing civilians in order to make Ukraine surrender. They are raping, torturing and kidnapping people. And that’s not from the news, that comes from person to person, from the ones who managed to escape.
On the other hand russians did absolutely nothing for 22 years and now when another war started and sanctions became harder than ever, they are just running to find a place under the sun. And you really think they deserve the same help as Ukrainian people ?

Educated people outside of Russia, including the United Kingdom, (where I am from) know that Russia is a civilised and cultured country that has made a great contribution to the world. In the UK we study Russian history, literature and music at school as part of the curriculum. We all remember the huge sacrifice made by Russia in the Great Patriotic War (1939-1945).
When the Cold War ended many hoped that Russia would join other countries in Europe and become democratic and respect the law. It is very sad that Russians have been badly governed for a long time and I hope that whoever comes after Putin, the 'West' doesn't make the same mistake as in 1990 and it supports the new Government and helps it to become more free and modern.

@ Gary Sorry for this , but I have an important correction to make. “Great Patriotic War” was 1941-1945, because 1939 - 1941 Stalin and Hitler were allies. It changed first in June 1941 when Hitler apparently realized he didn’t want to share his trophy (the entire World) with anyone and attacked Soviet. At first Stalin refused to believe it, but of course he was quickly forced to.

@@dominiquedominique6462 My mistake! I realised this after I had posted. In any case, Russia made a huge sacrifice in terms of people killed which is affecting their demographics down to today. I saw a statistic a while ago which said that out of every 300 allied soldiers that were killed in Europe in WW2, 298 of them were Russian (or Soviet). An estimate of Russia's population today, adjusting for the effects of Stalin's mis-rule and the losses of WW2 put Russia's population at around 250million v. around 145million today. It's not easy to understand the psychology of the Russians, given their sad and violent history.

Hi, you brave and great people! :-) I just stumbled over your video and enjoyed it very much - of course I will watch more of your content! I like the way you talk and explain the things! :-) I`d like to say that all this is very disturbing for all of us and everywhere (I am from Germany) - not "just" the political and war thing that is going on, but also the fact that russia is becoming more and more isolated and closed now. It is very disturbing.
Many of us, including myself, are worrying about how everybody in Russia will get by with the pressure due to political action on one and sanctions on the other side. As a person who communicates a lot via social media/internet I find it quite hard to notice how so many russians loose contact now to their "outlandish" friends and acquaintances, to the "rest" of the world. We all are used to meet so easily in internet space, but suddenly people, a whole big country, is in danger of disappearing totally - with their actions, jokes and discussions on social media, but also with their own channels, themes and topics which always enriched me. No matter if we never met, we all seem like very "near" somehow, like friends, virtual neighbours. Social media has made the world so much smaller in a way.
As I notice the struggle and danger for so many courageous people with their channels while they are speaking up now, I understand that many things cannot be said anymore and many questions cannot be answered openly; it soon has become difficult to find russian people in Russia, in other countries oder here, on YT, who still dare to talk open. One needs not have a friend or relative in Russia to worry about russian people now. You seem to speak directly and so open (haven`t watched any other of your videos until now, but will do), you give direct and clear information around the situation in Russia, as far as you are informed and told. Because of the lack of direct information this is worth so very much for so many people all over the world now! We really want to know how they are doing in all details ans daily while the situation develops, how they cope with the sanctions from day to day and what`s really going on in their minds and hearts - and if and how this might change by time. Without people like you and channels like yours it would be so very difficult now to get clearer information.
At last I`d like to say: I love your very clear and direct style and how both of you complete each other. Also your english is well to understand (that`s not always the case with some channels) The content you bring is to the point (often I find channels like yours but the people do avoid so many topics and points, although the title "promises" something else - or they seem quite distracted and loose their thoughts and points or do not really "hit" them, so one is watching half an hour or more with not much being said in the end.
You seem to be very structured and go right to the topic - and you seem to have a feeling what people outside of Russia could like to know now. I will be thankful for every information about the situation the russian people facing now, and I am also very interested like you, as family are doing in the Netherlands (?)! I will surely enjoy your videos. Thank you so very much for all your effort and the risk (and energy and time!!) that you take as family! People like you are so important now for the world to not loose connection to each other. Connection supports understanding - and understanding is what we are needing now to build up a peace- and trustful situation and climate in the world, against all missunderstanding and aggression. Aggression is just fear acted out. Take good care of yourselves and go on like this whenever possible, I`m subscribing and I will recommend your channel! :-)

I'm Czech citizen. And the majority of os condemns the incident with students excluded from the lecture. Colective guilt is something extremely wrong and we stand against it. The sanctions against Russians who try to flee Russia because the are not safe in the country are just wrong. Many Russians are real political refugees and we should accept them and help them the same as to Ukrainians. Western world should help Russians to establish some solid and strong abroad resistance against dictature regime in Russia.

Russians must rise up. They have to help to save their country from the dictator. They have to wake up from the illusion. They've helped Putin to keep the power, now they have do something to get rid of him. It is not possible to live safely and peacefully for anyone in Europe with this psychopath having absolute power over 144 million people. I'm sure with someone only slightly more grounded and rational in the lead possition Russia could develope and quickly overcome this economical disaster. And the world will help a lot, cos economical disaster in Russia means very big problem for whole Europe and it means problems for the rest of the world too. With some more predictable government the foreign companies will go back to Russia immediatelly and the most of Russians who has left the country in last years and mainly last weeks will go back, I'm sure about it. But the time is crucial thing. The longer time in isolation the closer to the social destruction Russia is and the longer time it will take to get better again. I'm so sad from all this situation. Wish you the best guys. Hope this nightmare will end soon.

I'm from Portugal and I understand what happens in a dictatorship like the Russian one, we had one for 50 years. In the last years of that dictatorship we had the liberation wars of Angola, Guinea and Mozambique and the government carried out a lot of propaganda, a phrase often mentioned by the military and in the street was "Angola is ours". It was the military dissatisfied with the war that overthrew the regime and helped in the transition to a democratic regime. Until then, it is necessary to fight against a regime that oppresses freedoms and lords of war. I think it's crazy when Putin threatens with nuclear weapons, I just think they need psychiatric treatment.

Thanks for this video! It covers most of what I discuss with a lot of Russians these days. I do miss the claims made by Putin about the Ukraine having a nazi regime and also committed genocide in the Donbas region. (Unbelievable with a Jewish president who has build an holocaust remembrance centre next to Babi Jar and is pro LGBTQ rights. Many Russians point to the influence of Azov, however their political party received less than 2 percent of the votes in the last election in the Ukraine.
Considering your last remarks my thoughts of sending the link of your video to some of the Russians I have been ‘debating’ will not be done. And it will probably not help anyway. Most Russians that believe the propaganda seem to truly believe their governments lies. And believers usually are not interested in facts, making it very hard to try and get them of their believe.
Many Russians also don’t seem to understand (luckily some great exceptions) that fastfood and clothing companies leaving is just the tip of the iceberg. They say it is great McDonalds and other have left, because Russians will now be more healthy. (A comment I get a lot!) Failing to see that companies like Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, Siemens NX, Apple, Google, Toyota, BMW, most foreign car manufacturers, Boeing, Unilever, Airbus and many many others will have a HUGE impact on the Russian economy. (As you mentioned yourself with the example of Procter & Gamble)
And even China is not allowed to sell certain usually high end products like computer chips. Because dutch company ASML (I spoke to a family member who works there yesterday) doesn’t allow it’s products or CPU’s made by its products to be sold to Russia. Same with TSMC, who is the largest chip producer in the world and has close ties with ASML.
Talking with many Russians it has become clear that they really don’t know much about what is happening in the Ukraine and that they have started to hate Ukrainians themselves. Because they see videos of Ukrainians putting up statues of Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych. And they think mainly the Azov regiment is responsible for the destruction and killing or Russian soldiers in the Ukraine.
My neighbor is Polish and comes from the Ukraine-Poland border region. She was in tears when I spoke to her just a week ago. The irony is that we live in the Russian Neighborhood in Zaandam were Tsar Peter stayed to Learn about Dutch Shipbuilding. He visited here twice and the house he stayed in is still available to be visited. (Tsar Peter House) I actually live right above the old shipyard. On our main square we have a statue of Tsar Peter that is a twin from the one in St Petersburg. The Statue now has a Ukrainian ‘flag’ on top of it, and last week our neighborhood hold a silent protest against the actions of Russia.
There is now talk of removing the statue, however I feel that because of its history with Zaandam this will not happen. I have a large collection of Matroesjkas because of my fathers connection to Russia. (Long story) and they are now turned to face the wall. I obviously donated as much as I could for 555, am now collecting toys for Ukrainian children and also want to quickly start helping Ukrainian refugees coming in.
I will however NEVER hate the Russian people, only hate the narcissistic psychopathic dictator who is responsible for it all. But I do get angry sometimes with people that just keep on defending the indefensible, even when presented with clear evidence against there claims. Indoctrination is powerful and hard to overcome! Groeten uit Zaandam!

I wish both of you the very very best! It’s extremely difficult to go against national/cultural/societal norms. You’re both extremely brave.. You have had to alienate yourself from family, friends and your country. No sane person would want have to put themselves through that. You both deserve to be recognized and commended for your actions in speaking out against this awful tragedy. Hopefully this enormous disaster &. suffering ends immediately!

Thank you so much for sharing with us everything that’s happening in Russia. This is also an important aspect of the terrible situation in Ukraine. Russia as a society is important for all of us also in the future and it is therefore crucial that we can have confidence in most Russians and that we can constantly build bridges between East and West. The task is definitely demanding in these times, but we must not give up and you do a very good job with just this. As most people with some knowledge of history know, the political foundation for Adolf Hitler was created as a result of the enormous war damage compensation Germany and the German society, including most Germans, had to pay and undergo in the interwar period. Hyperinflation and poverty were widespread. Most Germans accepted the defeat of World War I, but the subsequent stigmatization of Germany, Germans in general, and widespread poverty were difficult to accept. Many were still proud to be Germans and wanted to be part of the international community on new terms, but were prevented from doing so due to the stigma. In these waters, Hitler stirred up the political mood and demanded redress for Germany through his Nazi party (NSDAP). We know the rest of the story all too well. Fortunately, we had become wiser after the Second World War and Germany was quickly incorporated into the world community and received massive financial help, not least from the United States. The result was a German constitution that is probably the world's most democratic and not least a German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder).

Part of the background for the rise of the Nazis - which you probably weren’t taught (I certainly wasn’t!) - was all the Communist street fighters in Germany, all the Communist terror, all the Communist coup attempts (there were many!), etc. Parts of Germany were briefly Communist dictatorships after WW1!
Many people who found the little corporal ridiculous supported him because somebody had to fight against the Communists and nobody else would.

It was great to hear (and see) the two of you talk again, even addressing the present situation. :-)
From the day this "special operation" started, I've been thinking of you, wondering how you would feel. Probably with some boxes still to be opened after moving into your own house.
I have also learned about the Russian conscripts signing up to earn a bit more, unaware of the nature of the "drill" at hand, and of their loved ones who can't understand why these soldiers won't call home anymore - and by their deaths cause rural villages to slowly collapse: no teacher needed anymore, no grocer needed anymore, ...
But I obviously admire those Ukrainians prepared to give even their lives for their country. Fortunately, many Ukrainians seem to understand that many invaders are not their enemies.
I do hope that this "special operation" will soon be over, and that both peoples can rebuild the many things (material and immaterial) that they share (and those that they don't share).
I don't have notifications on for any of my (supposed) over a thousand subscriptions. I just looked you up. I'm also curious about that young Australian family in Irkutsk, the Backyard Russia channel. They streamed their considerations about leaving four days ago. I'll try to watch those 51 minutes soon.
All the best to you four!

I cannot imagine how stressful and traumatizing this is for you, especially to be separated from your parents, and to have to worry about your loved ones welfare as the situation continues to worsen. It would definitely not be safe for you to return. I pray that this conflict will end, and that Russian leadership will be changed! Stay safe. Our hearts and prayers are with all of you. - Friends in Utah, USA.

Yes, Putin is responsible for every calamity the world has endured for aeons! The guy is a menace!!! He eats babies for breakfast and drinks their blood!!!!! Unlike our western leaders who by means of their spineless character have kissed Karl Schwab's filthy ass, have endless talks on the phone with senile sleepy Joe and close cooperation with "philantropist" Bill Gates's on world depopulation., Putin stands alone! A miserable man that believes in traditional families. a polypolar world and free market. He is really psycho, indeed! You nailed it!

I've watched tons of videos made by Russians for the last couple of weeks. Probably more than in my whole life, and what surprised me the most is that embedded weakness. I was born, thanks to Soviet occupation in a communist country, and freedom wasn't given to us for free.
My predecessors had to fight for it, many spent years in prisons, many were killed. They did it so my generation doesn't have to do this.
Your predecessors never did it, so it's your turn.
Nobody will invade Russia to fight for your freedom, it must be your move.
People are scared? I understand, but that monster grows fueled by your fear, it will not collapse without your actions. As you said, Russia didn't turn into a totalitarian in one day, Putin did it step by step over the last 20y. Where were the protests in eg. 2008, 2014?
See what your soldiers do right now? All rapes, shooting civilians, press, all the robbery.
Putin is a lunatic, but the sons of the mother Russia are not much better. That's the message that goes to the world.
In our pop culture, we have phrases like сволочь and homo sovieticus. They didn't appear there without a reason. The new generation of Russians proved and proves that every day.
Putin is a lunatic, but he is not the main problem. The problem is how politics look like in Russia and as long as you do not change it, the west should not collaborate with Russia at all. If Russians are fine with that system, good luck to them.

I'm so happy to have found your channel, you've expressed more in this little video of what is truly going on in Russia than I have seen anywhere else. The other channels coming from Russia that I have followed for a long time either don't speak about the situation at all or they say very little. I don't blame them for being so guarded in what they say, I understand through videos from expats like yourselves that penalities are high for going against the government's stated purposes. Almost all of them though mention the 15-year possible penalty for saying just one wrong thing...what a horrible thing to live with! And so I do not blame them, one day I feel certain the truth will come out....perhaps when the heartbreaking pictures of devastated cities, hospitals, apartments, and worse..begin making their way across the Russian border. It has happened in North Korea, it will happen in Russia.

@Expat Family Live thank you for your support! I live in St. Petersburg and apart from the price increase, luck of sugar and pads, a lot of closed organizations and social media, letter "Z" adverts in metro - actually it doesn't seem that something terrible happening. As I know - we have protests at the city center, and we try to do some anti-w events. But in general, people live their ordinary lifes as usual, and it scares me. Because I understand that we all know what is happening, but whose, who are against, are afraid to talk about situation out loud. Like at my work, I myself have to quietly listen to how my colleagues are concerned about the Russian football future when all I can think at this moment is how my relatives are doing now in their apartment in Chernigov.
