But cybercrime has long gone beyond hackers lurking in on the web, sending you phishing links or cracking databases. Today, in order to frame a person (or perhaps you), it is enough just to borrow a phone to make a quick call.

This was back when everyone didn't own a phone and even the most basic of "smart phones" weren't considered affordable like now, and that brought rise to a criminal market of stolen phones. The majority of instances such as this weren't random occurrences. Criminals that knew the area well etc were the ones doing this mainly in tourist heavy areas.

People have asked me to use my phone because their phone ran out of battery and died, to which I offer to loan them a charging cord so they can charge their phone for a few minutes to a usable percentage. All of them said no and skulked off. That's fishy behavior. A person whose phone really _did_ die would be grateful to use a kind stranger's charging cable and patient enough to wait through the charging process.

Intruders creating fake evidence of involvement in a crime was something I got to know about a few years back. In India, in a case called the Bhima Koregaon case, fake evidence was planted in the computers of tribal activists and they were taken in custody on the basis of that forged evidence. By the time they got bail, one of the accused died in prison.

    • @markpetersen290
      @markpetersen290 2 года назад +7

I don't block them, because that's as ineffective as blocking spam callers. They spoof numbers so it literally does nothing. What I have instead is the generic spam detection Google offers enabled. It isn't perfect but it filters most of them. If it misses one, a big mistake is to open the message or mark it as read. When you do that, they are that you saw it, when, where you were, and what device you have. So just label it spam so googles spam detector gets better. It sucks at detecting spam calls, so I have a 3rd party app do that for me

Some phones have Sandbox environments ("Guest user" or "Kid's space"), in which you can allow only certain apps. For example, a secondary private browser, calculator, or sandboxed camera for when someone wants your phone to take a few photos.
Whenever a friend or an acquaintance asks for your phone, turn on the sandbox mode, and they won't be able to access anything you haven't permitted (files, settings, other apps). Just make sure to set a strong password to prevent them from exiting the sandbox.
Also, DISABLE USB and WIFI DEBUGGING! It's so easy to take someone's phone and with a few clicks establish a wireless ADB connection from a laptop.

BW has had external security audits and you can self host it aswell, but for most that would make it less secure, so just use it in BW's cloud platform, unless you know how to secure your servers. Also never ever use SMS 2Fa, always use app based, or better yet get something like a Yubi key.

Other pictures.... Photo of the shop I visit for Chinese food (so I know the phone number), Photo of some python code I wrote (for quick reference), Windows error messages, my cat under my bed, empty freezers at the supermarket (covid shortage)
Of course this can release where I shop, where I buy Chinese food and where I live (cat) by the meta data.
But yeah, installing a RAT onto the phone is the worse.

there should be a valet key to phones. like you know how you can dial emergency numbers without a password, you should have a loner password for basic features like secured hotspot and telephone usage. that way you could lend a phone after removing your sim and let them use the sim from their dead phone if they needed to make a long distance call or download a massive file. the valet mode could timestamp everything in case you needed to explain yourself to investigators.

That is a great idea. You should make a business plan for that!

You could use guest mode on your phone and then dial the number for her.

Hi man, your videos are really interesting. I have a suggestion: can you make a throrough review of MS OneDrive's "Personal Vault"? How safe would sensitive data be here? And possibly a comparison to alternatives? Best regards.

Easy fix: use pre-paid phones (if you don't need to ID yourself when buying the simcard)

Doesn't work in my country. Prepaid phones require ID registration as well.

On Android you can have a guest account you loan instead of you main account.
    Like Windows logins.

I doubt my bank know my actual phone number, I gave them the landline number who simply ends in my router without any phone connected. And things like that are the reason I don't have online banking, I don't have a credit card, I don't use Apple or Google Pay and I haven't connected my phone to PayPal(use burner SIM cards and throw it anywhere in your flat). Edit: Ah f.. you got me at 10:30.. I'm used to have a picture of my debit card PIN because I forget it so often and I stood a couple of times at the ATM and thought.. "Well.. this keypad and me.." .. I guess I delete it now and have to run back home everytime.
