Lions rugby furious with South Africa over defence of Schalk Burger eye gouging | RugbyPass Archives

Graham Rowntree and Paul O'Connell are not happy with Peter de Villiers' reaction to the Schalk Burger eye gouge. It happened in the second test of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 2009. The Springbok appeared to make contact with Luke Fitzgerald in the 2nd Test of the match.

Got to admit Schalk was lucky because if it was red carded he would have cost us the series and just imagine how much hatred his own supporters would have against him. And probably would have been the end of his career as well.

Lt Dan imaging equating getting grabbed in the nuts with an attempted blinding of an opponent. He could have been blinded and they and you are trying to defend this. He should have been red carded and banned for a year. Trying to take someone’s sight away is the lowest of the low as far as injuring your opponent.

Lets hope the next Lions tour, is about rugby. It seems that these tours are being ruled by social media and journalists, and not rugby. It is bad enough that our team is being coached by a Nzealander and so many of the team are from other rugby nations. Is there no uk coach good enough? Now there is even talk of Sout-African players based in the UK to be picked for the tour? It is like an internatonal invitational team vs SA. What has happened to our rugby? It is supposed to be the British and Irish Lions. We are allready four nation combining against one nation. Why are we using hired guns?
