With a bunch of guys coming over this weekend, I concentrate on making the off grid log sauna functional with a wood floor, benches and a wall to keep the heat in. It smells great (aromatic cedar) in the bathhouse when the fire is burning. This video is back to the original videos from last year - a lot of building, a little bit of scenery and some cooking. I hope you like it.

Shawn, I have to say that you reflect a mindset that has long been passed over by many in woodworking procedures. I was taught that, when one practices woodworking with hand tools, one has to set their mind to the "journey" along with the "destination". In plain terms, that simply means that a woodworker dedicated, for one reason or another, to using hand tools exclusively, must focus on the skills of planning, measurement, and joinery to accomplish the art of building anything by hand, with time involved being secondary in the process. With the speed of modern tools and the "gotta have it NOW" mentality of modern man [and woman], we have lost track of the feelings associated with the actual hewing of the "ingredients" for any project, be it a cabin or simply a window frame or sill. The "art" of woodworking involves, in my estimation, the skills and patience to plan out, initiate a procedure for, and completing whatever task is required to build for one's needs. And the resulting satisfaction of completing each one of the tasks, even if it is striking cut lines and dimensioning one board to fit properly where it belongs, is part of that "journey".
You have my undying admiration for your methods of dealing with this style of construction and processing raw materials into useable items for the homestead. With little or no dialogue in your videos, you pass on to other budding woodworkers so many hints and tips and cumulative knowledge in the art of true woodworking that I wonder if they even reflect on the vast knowledge which is included when you pick up hand tools and begin to "build" something?? It is a joy and an honor to watch each and every one of your videos and I thank you for such an all inclusive and complete effort to show exactly how they once handled basic tasks as a matter of being in need and meeting those needs in the manner of their era and lifestyle.
Wordy, but this is my way of saying, "Thank you, sir", and thank you to Cali also for being there to show the dog's role in these processes! The presence of a dog in a man's life is something which is above words but without any comparison, in my opinion, and they will always be our one and only "best friend" no matter what the circumstance.

Fantastic, Shawn. Stay healthy and safe. 4 weeks ago I fell while doing carpentry at my daughter's farm. Broke my right wrist and had surgery to place hardware in there. At 68 I'm still pretty active and enjoy doing projects. But this has set me back temporarily. I'll be back at it but just a friendly reminder to work safe. Your mind and body are your most important tools.

He built his house, garage and laid the lawn then on Father s Day and on Sunday on his job saved teo of his fellow workers lives, then losing his own in a coal bunker fire. He was only 24 years old. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning.I miss my brother, afte 55 years.

Greetings from Finland! Thank you for the great video. Correct placement for thermometer is inside the sauna, head height when sitting on the bench. Sauna temperature should be around 80C for rookies :)

    • @VstoOnion
      @VstoOnion 5 лет назад

@Mckittrick Hyatt It all depends of the type of the sauna stove. The total thermal mass of the stones play big role. Also the humidity of sauna or "löyly" as we call it, play a big role. The more humid, the less temperature is needed. Personally I prefer more humid "löyly" and more thermal mass. Therefore you have more play room for more experienced or demanding sauna users.

I know you throw that thing for her and it shows your a genuine good person. Now about the cabin you are a genius I listen to the birds the saws the hammering the chopping and its music to my ears. You have a beautiful family and I am happy you found a spot to call home surrounded by nature and among bright stars. Keep doing your thing don't let's others drag you down it's upward and onward keep shining and be all the glory to God stay blessed. Very Relaxing! Thank You. You inspired me the other day to cook over my fireplace. There was a slight chill in the house in the morning. One of the few chills left till next winter. I built the fire in the fireplace. It took the chill off the house. After the fire became embers I placed my skillet and coffee pot into the fireplace. I cooked some fried eggs and boiled some water for my British Tea. It was the first time in my life I have ever done this. Using nature to heat, cook, and make a beverage in the house was awesome! At 28:00 minutes or so, you can hear an Eastern Phoebe. They are great birds to have around because they feed on bugs. Might want to throw together a few quick birdhouses, Shawn.

There are books available that tell which birds like a particular house even to what size hole you need and how high the houses need to be. What kind of cover they like.

From one twitcher to another ,thanks for the ID. We don't get the Eastern Phoebe in B.C. but the song s similar to the Alder Flycatcher, especially the Free Beer.

Shawn, over the last 10 days I have made 4 raised beds in my little hillside garden here in Ireland and it's down to you I persevered. With rheumatoid arthritis, they need to be high as my back is banjaxed! Lol. My tomatoes are in, along with onions, cabbage and carrots. Really looking forward to continued planting over the coming days. Great antidote to clinical depression! No weekend would be complete without the Cali medicine and the sensibility of Shawn James! No Brown nosing, honestly.

    Hello...
I really like to see your videos, you know although I understand what you say just a little... My English is not very well.
I Learn English by myself everyday, I wanted to give up several times because it's difficult to me who is elderly...
Your activities and environment are what my best favorite things but I can't afford to do in my life.
I wish you have a good life.

Trinh, your English is good enough for your message to be understood, which is the important bit, so don't worry. I am an elderly Englishman trying to learn Czech, so... ;-)

I'm with the Hiker that commented below; yours when I do moring chores is one of the first vlogs I watched this morning; more people should because you are so very mellow. I wish I liked rabbit; but my mom cured me of that; it's the one thing she admitted that she couldn't cook well........love 'ya mom but...Anyway, have a great Canadian wilderness weekend, you and Cali and that sauna; that is going to pay itself off for years!TFS
