First Hot Sauna in the Forest | Off Grid Log Cabin Life

- Now that the off grid, wood fired sauna in the forest is relatively airtight and the roof is insulated with moss, it gets up to 80 degrees Celsius (176F) quickly and without too much wood, higher if I crank the wood stove and give the cedar logs of the log cabin walls time to heat up. It's time to finish the interior now, so I smoked the deer hide that was hanging on the wood shed to dry it back out and I hung it on the wall of the change room area of the bathhouse. I will be adding a sink, bench and firewood store in here as well.
With summer winding down, I have a lot to do around the wilderness homestead but the weather and scenery is just to perfect to keep working. I am taking more time this fall to go for long hikes in the forest, exploring waterfalls, fishing, hunting and practicing archery. This is why I embarked on this life simplification and off grid, wilderness lifestyle to begin with and I need to start enjoying my freedom more.

80 degrees celsius is pretty optimal temperature for soft sauna experience. I'd say majority of us Finns like the sauna at 80 degrees. Enjoy the steams!

Whats it in °F?
Key to good sauna experience is that there is enough fresh air entering the room. Usually air enters through a small hatch in the wall next to where you are sitting. Hatch is closed when heating the sauna and opened when enjoying the löyly. Although now when the gaps between logs are not sealed with clay, the fresh air probably leaks in there through the moss, which actually might work quite nicely. But still the hatch might be good idea.
@@JariSuominen I'd say a sauna needs two hatches. One under the benches near the floor which is always slightly open and another one in the ceiling which you keep closed when you're heating up sauna and enjoying the steams.

I love watching you work with all the old tools, brings back so many memories of my helping my Dad with the many projects he would do. Even though we bought him power tools, he always preferred to use all his manual tools that he had used throughout his life (he was born in 1911), maybe even used them with his Dad. Watching you also makes me wish I was 50 yrs younger so I could go off and live off the grid like you are doing. Thank you for amazing and beautiful videos and experiences you share with us. It's Friday morning in California. I'm still in my robe, sipping coffee, something I haven't done in over 30 years. I'm watching your latest video. I hear your theme song and immediately, I feel an overwhelming calmness. Seeing the beginning of your video, the beautiful sights, I'm one day closer to "getting off grid". I really can't put my finger on it but this is the best video I've seen in a long time.
Hi Shawn,
During this video a couple of things stood out for me.
One is, how much stronger you are physically than when you started this vlog. Things which used to take a lot more effort, now you just hold'em down and whack 'em.
Second is, during this video It also became very clear that you are always remaining alert to the sounds and changes in the woods around you, no matter how absorbed you seem to be in the work.. A strong reminder that one cannot drift off into la-la-land in those surroundings.
The Sauna is gorgeous. Your entire growing compound is shaping up beautifully.
IMO you are setting a great example for so many.. I feel blessed to be able to watch it all come together.
