I really enjoy your video’s. I am a retired Greyhound Bus Driver, with 32 years of service. I found your videos right on the money, straight up with no bullshit to them.
Greyhound would do themselves a huge favor by watching your videos and your narration of your trips. They will definitely have their eyes opened by listening to a first hand account from a passengers perspective, of what it’s like to ride on one of their buses.
I rode on one for 32 years and my perspective of the thousands of trips I conducted on their behalf is totally different from the perspective of one of our passengers.
I truly value everything you had to say and it shined a whole different light on things. I enjoyed your view on things and have found a even deeper appreciation for the people we serve. Thank you for taking the time to enlighten this old dog, it means a lot. Take care and be well. Safe travels my friend.

Tim I have traveled via Megabus and Greyhound back and forth across the USA and Canada. I always remind people that bus travel is cheap and plan wisely. Be flexible with travel arrangements. I took Megabus from Philadelphia to Miami for $4.50 for New Years Eve holiday 2016. The money you save on your trip you can use towards a great hotel stay. Plan months ahead and be patient with your travel plans. Remind yourself how cheap the bus ticket you paid. Regardless of the outcome you will eventually get to your destination. Be patient. If you have a poor experience this is your fault due to poor travel planning. "If you fail to plan, plan to fail."

Hi Leonardus, thanks for the comment! Can I ask you does Megabus get there on time? I know the video says Greyhound does not, I wasn't sure if Megabus is usually on time or close to on time? Thanks

@@russellmatthews7788 Hello. I would score Megabus as 98% on-time. I am lenient with the bus being 5-10 mins behind schedule because of the congested roads I-95. Additionally, when I used Megabus I do not use it with transfer connections. Philly>NYC, Philly> DC, Philly>Toronto. I get on the bus and don't worry about making a connection; simply enjoy the ride to your destination. Cheap, clean, efficient. Definitely beats travelling on Greyhound. No complaints. I have gotten my monies worth with the $1 fares.

The Megabus is personally my favorite! Greyhound just fails to deliver, since it's dingy, cramped, and isn't exactly worth the price. I've been able to snag $5 tickets from Megabus, which would regularly cost $40 on Greyhound. Glad you ditched Greyhound!

Great video!! I hate flying so I'm pretty much left with the bus. Sometimes Greyhound makes me feel like a hostage because of the fact that its at times the only convenient route given the number of schedules they run. The worst thing about the bus generally is the passengers though....

Perhaps this is just because I'm strange myself, bit I LOVE the crazy people you meet on a greyhound. That's part of my experience as a backpacking tourist. I remember a trip from NY down to Fort Lauderdale over several days. During the trip, I sat next to an old woman who had survived the Nazi death camps, a man who looked like 'Huggie bear', a teenager who offered me his PlayBoy when I needed the restroom, a bold middle age man who insisted on using my shoulder as a pillow, a young man on his way to be picked up for Army bootcamp and who's mother was crying and kissing him so much I thought she would end up going with us on the bus, an Asian gentleman in pinstripe suit looking up at his hand luggage for a full 4 hours(!) and a farm girl who probably never travelled beyond her local town in her whole life and considered me the strangest man she had ever met because I never owned a pick-up truck. And all of these on ONE SINGLE TRIP! I love greyhound!!!!

Just found out about your channel. I've ridden all the buses, planes, trains extensively and feel I can contribute some of that experience. I think it is just hilarious that there is a dedicated Greyhound Bus channel, who would have "thunk" it! This channel is going to be some fun.
    Meg vs. Grey?
    (1) Megabus' onboarding procedure is faster than Greyhound, BUT I can always carry two carry-ons on GH where I can only get one on Meg. As you noted GH has an overhead bin. When travel is complete I can just get off GH and go, while I must hang around Meg for the unloading procedure. BOTH buses are far superior than airlines when boarding. On airlines you wait half an hour while people are trying to load and unload non complying baggage in the overhead bins.
    (2) Greyhound has no reservations, BUT a reservation system on buses will almost require that you WILL be sitting next to someone. There is virtually no such thing as having an empty next to you on Meg, it just doesn't happen. On GH it is 50-50 in my cases. I've never lost a seat because I didn't have a reservation on GH. Meg travelers seem to be quieter than GH travelers. The back of a Meg bus unlike GH is no more noisier than people who sit upfront. On GH you better bring noise cancelling apparatus if you sit in the back.
    (3) The Meg buses are clean but more crampy than GH. Meg is too tight for me. GH in many cases if you're not going on the original outgoing bus you'll have the usual booger-across-the-window wall or back-of-the-seat in front of you.
    (4) I have never been on a Meg where the wifi ACTUALLY WORKED!
    (5) There are many places in the south, Houston, TX for example where you can't really ride Mega during the summer day. Most of the trips to/from day are made during the middle of the day. Their "depot" is a baking hot downtown open parking lot reflecting back already scorching blazes from the sun. It is a beating!
    (6) I preferred Mega's ticketing option better than GH. GH required you have a printer, and if you didn't have access to a printer no discount online ticket. ALL airlines, Amtrak, Uber, many local city buses allowed you to use your phone to board. Not stone-age tech savvy GH, you HAD to have paper. They were the last of the paper ticket holdouts.
    (7) UPDATE: Finally, GH hired some software people to allow phone based ticketing!
    (8) Oddly enough all but one ticket I have bought between the two buses, GH was the lowest. Depending on the destination GH will generally match or be lower than Mega if both buses are going to the same location. GH rates are really high where Mega doesn't go, so if anything Meg's routes have kept Gh competitive. I don't think Meg goes anywhere that GH doesn't go, but GH goes to a lot of places and many more times than Meg. I don't generally buy tickets more than five days in advance so many of Meg's discount I miss. I did on one occasion get a $7 from Dallas to San Antonio. It was $13 on GH. Before Meg this fee would have been at least $40.
The $5 priority seating is well worth it if you KNOW the bus is going to be crowded and you KNOW that you're lined up well in the back when boarding. I know when I need one, and when not. This kind of ticket is only available if you're in an originating city, because if you're making a connection the seat you want (on the connection) may already be occupied.
    (9) GH has more flexibility is dropping you off in odd places. You can make arrangements to be dropped off "at the gas station" 15 miles in the middle of nowhere. I had to do this only once, but they let me do it.
    (10) Overall I really wanted to like Meg, ANY competitor I thought would be superior to GH, but in the end the ride is roomier on GH, and more schedules, and if the weather is rainy, hot, or cold you run the risks of being in the elements with Mega. In the end I never really benefited from those super cheap fares. The key is trying to get every thing done on line (internet/phone, etc.) where you don't have to get involved with terminal personnel at all.

Had a great experience on MegaBus, paid a few bucks extra and got the front row on the top deck and it was very much worth it for the extra leg room. Plus it was cool to see the road while you are 10 feet above it.

  • @dubulbee
    @dubulbee 6 лет назад +3

Another fair and balanced review...thanks for posting!
As far as comfort...I'd take a Prevost X-3 (Greyhound) over a VanHool TD925 (Megabus), any day. First of all, the ride of that Prevost is about the smoothest ride on the road...it's the choice of most entertainer's when building their multi-million dollar motorhomes. Even the White House Secret Service selected it for conversion to a presidential transport vehicle.
Second, head room...both decks of the double-decker are only 5'9"...I'm not that tall (71"), but I have to duck my head on both levels. And as you mentioned, that leaves no room for overhead storage bins, like the Prevost and older MCI coaches have.
While I agree that a lot of the Greyhound station's leave much to be desired, at least Greyhound provides basic shelter, rest rooms, and some sort of food service even if just vending machines. Megabus, often uses curbside street loading, and is like a parasite, expecting their passenger's to use things like nearby Amtrak station's (not counting the ones they pay to operate from), or other nearby businesses (if any), to shelter their passenger's.

My megabus experience in 2019 was crazy. It was a trip from Miami to Orlando, that was set to leave 10 am. We broke down in Hollywood, FL. Had to wait hours for another bus which made us go Tampa first and then Orlando (two different directions). My trip was supposed to be approximately 4 hours, but ended up being almost 8 hours with the stops etc. I will be trying Greyhound next. I used Greyhound often when I was younger, its been about 10 years.

Stagecoach, which is the parent company of Megabus, which is based in Perth-Scotland, , is a massive bus and train operator in the UK, over here they stop and change Megabus and local routes if they are not profitable, they are aggressive and quite harsh to places if they are not making profit, Megabus Gold which was a sleeper coach ran for 5 or so years and because it didn't make enough money the whole thing was scrapped in last few months.

Greyhound had $1 fares, but they were major destination-major destination; for eg: Calgary-Edmonton/Fort McMurray/Grande Prairie (Alberta). Plus also Vancouver-Kelowna/Kamloops (BC).
How it worked was they were issued as "21Day Advance Fares" where (in reality), u had to book Thirty One - 35 Days (5Wks) in Advance. Also, u couldn't change their dates after that, because $8.40 RTN (after tax at the time) was wayyyy better than the best they could do, that even just to change the date on them was a $20+Tax change, which wasn't worth it when u already had a valid ticket in ur hand & it was wayyy better than any other transportation option.
I was able to buy a ticket, several times, from Calgary to Grande Prairie AB; & again it had to be 5Wks prior, so that schedule you wanted wasn't sod out when booking... & how they did it, was that the first 2-3 people ONLINE Only (who their confirmed/definite dates of travel), to buy a ticket were able to get "$1 Tckt's" by beating everyone else to the punch. ..... After those 3 people have bought tickets at $1 Fares ($2 RTN), then it would go up to the next (Reg 21Day advance priced) fare of $60OW/$120RTN b/c it was a 500mile (800Km) stretch plus one transfer in Edmonton, to get from Calgary to Grande Prairie... So, back to my (actually happened) example, when I went from Kelowna BC, to Calgary, AB... I would pay the regular $110(RTN) Advanced Purchase price for my ticket to Calgary & back. Once I got to Calgary, I already had an $8 ticket in my hand to go up to Gr.Prairie & back!! Then once I came bk from there into CGY, it was just my ticket for my last leg back home.
& also, besides saving $200 (Kelowna-Grande Prairie as a single advanced ticket, was based on distances only for the most part) plus on a RTN tckt, by knowing where to look (esp when only getting paid once a month instead of every two weeks at the time), & being able to get the best bang for my buck that way, who wouldn't want to just get up & go away to wherever on a Greyhound Bus!! ....
Oh, & here's a breakdown for you as to how they worked in Canada. Since Greyhound's head office was in Alberta, there was only 1 Tax to pay (Federal) for booking travel. In BC we have two taxes (Federal & Provincial).... So how Greyhound did it, was they charged you a $2 RTN Fare, + a $6 Levy/Operation SC, *"Facility Fee" they called it on their paper* took it up to $8, & then the tax of 5% (40c total), for a total of $8.40 on your credit card (as online Debit didn't exist up here at t time).
& Lastly, my one sibling needed a break from all the summertime wild fires we had in BC bk in 2016. I looked online at the time, when Greyhound was also servicing Vancouver - Whistler Village (they had a Winter Olympics here several years ago.) & I was able to get her a ticket from Kelowna-Whistler for $16.80 RETURN (Yes u read that right.) b/c of the fact that KEL-Vancouver on the overnight leg prior was $4.20 ($1Tckt + $3 Levy & Taxes), her 7:30AM RTN tckt (retuned later that night into Vancouver) was $8.40, & .... the only trick for the dog (er "Hound" ticket printer).... was that I had to wait until midnight so the computer refreshed its screen & was able to change its tickets/schedules to that following day.... & when I did, as soon as it switched over, it gave me 2 available fares at $1... & I booked her last ticket from Vancouver to Kelowna for that last $4.20 (no pun intended either); making her total cost of a RTN trip as $16.80!!
However, for those who didn't get t chance of being as lucky (whether not knowing anything about it, nor it was less than 35 days available to grab that offer online)... Their regular Kelowna-Vancouver 21Day Advance fare, was $35-$43 each way ($100RTN TOTAL), & then from VAN-Whistler, was $25-$30 RTN TOTAL via their 21Day Advance fare... Whereas, if u went from Kelowna direct, it would've been $140RTN ($70 each way) after taxes & blsht eco fee, because it was only one single pushthru ticket. ..... & If u chose to leave that same day, their fares were $15 more if u bought at a tckt agent compared to online; but if u bought online for that same day travel; their NON-Refundable ticket would've been about $200, which still would have even been cheaper to buy one to Vancouver & then Whistler instead; as it would've been about $160-$175 instead of $200+ as two separate tickets.
I know that that was in 2016 forward, but I hope it helps you with future discussions & blog updates later on in life about greyhound (&/or other companies' $1 Fares *&/or Adt'l Fees* such as the mind blowers at MegaBus)!!
    Cheers.

I took Amtrak from NYC to Montreal during the daytime then an overnight Adirondack Trailways bus back to NYC in Sep 2009 a few days later & actually found the bus to be way faster on the exact same route due to the border wait. Amtrak has way better views & seating/comfort but the overnight bus back got me back faster. Amtrak was actually slightly cheaper for the route back then. Bus had more departure times. Adirondack Trailways has a spotless safety record. Apparently there is now a bus safety app for the US out there called SaferBus. Ran by the FMCSA.

Everyone's experience is different. For the most part, I have no problem with Greyhound. Are there things that I wish were different, sure. But that's the case with any transportation provider (or retail company, for that matter). The avalanche of negative stories you read in the comment section is largely due to the fact that people with a negative experience tend to complain about it. Those with a positive experience keep the satisfaction to themselves.

It’s not that the police are buying people that they don’t want in their towns one way tickets, they are helping people that end up in their towns get back home. The police are not the only ones that do this, you have countless charities, churches, and people that help homeless people get back home to families like run away teens.
The state also buys tickets to get prison release home also. I have gone and picked up a bus load of them and took them back to Houston Texas.
Also you have friends buying this tickets.
One thing I noticed you did not cover, now maybe it has changed since I worked for greyhound (I have had friends working for Megabus) is that if you miss a connection with the different bus companies. Greyhound will get you on the next available bus to get you that direction, Megabus you have to buy a new ticket.

Haven't ridden on Greyhound since the Christmas of 2016, now I'm going back to El Paso from Dallas. Hope they've upgraded to those new leather seats lol. I've already been on Greyhound with Wi-Fi but not upgraded seats lol.

The thing that kinda sucks about Megabus ticketing is there not really great when it comes to transfers....For example I can go from Durham, NC to Atlanta and Atlanta to New Orleans, but not Durham-New Orleans via Atlanta. You have to book 2 separate trips and hope nothing major happens because it's not a guantareed connection

      @IvyANguyen 7 лет назад +1

I was looking this up trying to piece together a longer journey but it is indeed hard as they do not do through-ticketing.It would behoove the traveller to have the next bus leave the day after the previous one arrives, at least, so you have a bigger time buffer. You can hypothetically travel from Montreal to Miami exclusively by Megabus by linking them up yourself, however it can be expensive & costlier than another travel method.

There is something nice about taking one Greyhound bus vs making connections between multiple city buses and a train. It is an extra $1 -$15 but much less stress.

National Express are more comfortable with leather seats, curtains, Megabus have no curtains or blinds and material covered seats, I prefer slightly the National Express coaches, but both are good and comfortable enough.

Greyhound runs in Mexico and Canada, whereas Megabus only goes to a few stops.
Greyhound is better with luggage, as Megabus will not allow bikes at all.

GREYHOUND or TRAILWAYS anytime before you would try that 0.50-Cent Mega Bus. GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS Have REAL BUS TERMINALS, and MEGA BUS Are Like CITY BUSES, STOP A Un-Wanted STOPS.

Has anyone else had trouble getting your full refund from Greyhound after they cancelled the service. All other transportation modes that I was attempting to book to get my daughter away from the storm in Virginia showed that their flights or trips were cancelled or unavailable due to weather (several airlines, amtrack, and Mega bus). I went to greyhound and they showed that they were still booking. I booked the trip for tomorrow 9/13/18. Greyhound cancelled the trip and when my husband and I called about our refund we were told that we could not get the full refund. We stayed on the phone for a long period of time with 2 representatives and a supervisor from the Philippines. The Supervisor was rude and told us that she did not personally take our payment. We were told that since our trip was for tomorrow, we have to call back tomorrow to get our refund, even though they cancelled the trip. I wonder how many more people Greyhound is booking know that the trip is cancelled, and not giving them the full refund or immediate refund!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If we don't get our money back in full tomorrow we will seek legal remedy.

Reality check: Most issues are caused by . . . You and your fellow travelers! After all, those dingy stations were clean and shiny when they opened! It’s not the company stealing bags. Maybe that’s how poor behavior came to be called “low rent.”
When you pay the least possible don’t be surprised if that’s what you get.
