My 2 tips to add are. 1. Sit at the front of the bus as it’s easier to get on and off the bus. 2. try to plan your bathroom breaks based on the stops Keep traveling 🧳
This is so handy. I will be taking a greyhound for the first time going between Canada and Ohio. Flights skyrocketed to almost 800. 800 vs like 200 for a whole roundtrip on the bus is a no brainer!
Tip #11: Pay attention to the Re-Boarding passes they hand out to you. Pay attention to the number of the pass the driver announces. And, keep the pass with either your printed ticket or in an area with your phone if you are using an e-ticket. I went to San Francisco, CA last year and it was because of your videos, I was able to Ride and Experience the Greyhound going there and arriving back! Keep up the Great Videos!
Tip #11: Go any other way but Greyhound. There is no guarantee you'll get to your destination, and many stations have closed and many others moved to very inconvenient locations. This is a 3 year old video, and Greyhound is running a very shoestring operation in 2024. They have sold all of their stations.
BLEACH WATER ON A SPRAY BOTTLE IF YOU HAVE TO USE THE BATHROOOM ON THE BUS AND DEODORIZE THE BATHROOM WHEN YOU HAVE TO USE IT FOR EMERGENCY ON THE BUS. SO U CAN PROTECT YOUR BUTT, AND HEALTH
Hey Guru! I just wanted to let you know your videos on the Greyhound helped me out immensely. I was going to ride the greyhound for the first time last month and needed a little knowledge, little did I know that there was much to know about it! Your tips, and tricks helped me out so much. I really appreciate the Greyhound series you've done and I bet many others do as well.
Tip #11: Do not ride short of cash, on my last trip to CT from Atlanta GA I end up taking Metro North Railroad from Grand Central to New Haven Union Station., then a lyft!
When it comes to keeping an eye on your things, the thing I'm most concerned with is leaving bags in the bins under the main deck so that's why I'd get off the bus at each stop to make sure no one takes my bag when they reach their stop
I always have at least 1 power bank (usually 2 on vacations), so I don't even to find an outlet at the station. Absolutely no chance I'd leave me phone there anyway.
I boarded a bus in Olympia, WA. There was no terminal. The bus left at 2:15 a.m. It departed from a back part of town. There were a lot of homeless people hanging around and some had pitched tents. We got to Seattle at 3:30 a.m. It was in a terrible part of town. The terminal was locked. There was a vending machine, restrooms chairs and information boards but the problem was, we couldn't get into the terminal. We had to wait outside. It was like waiting in a garbage dump. It was in a very questionable part of town. We had to wait until 8:45 a.m. for our connecting bus at 8:45 a.m. There were no toilets we could use. I'm talking about not going potty for 7 or more hours. Most of us expected there would be restrooms when we got to Seattle. They didn't even have a Porta-Potti. I tried calling Greyhound on several different phone numbers to see if I could get someone to unlock the terminal. All I got were recordings.
You have great Videos. Greyhound hasn't changed in 45 years when I rode it a lot. You are so, so realistic about Life and what to expect. If you ever want to be a Frugal Traveler in a Car and a Tent...let me know. I carry two tents and two mattresses (18") and what I do would be considered Glamping unless I am in a National Park (no electric). Enjoy your Trips.
Thanks for the great advice. One more. Make sure you keep your luggage ticket handy. I almost lost my guitar because I was having a hard time finding the ticket for the guitar and the bus driver was getting pretty angry and needed to get going. He wasn't going to just take my word that it was mine.
Timothy, now there are different class of tickets in the GH Bus and apparently, if you pay a higher rate you are supposed to be first on the bus and first to pick your seat. Also, the driver's, from my experience on the GH bus, don't put up with loud and unruly people, the driver's can and will kick you off the bus. Sitting on the front of the bus is good but the middle aisle of the bus is safest as far as crash accidents are concern. GH is making an effort to catch up with the times and up dating the inside of their buses. Now, they do need to install seatbelts.
I was a driver for 8 years and can verify this is a good list. I would add. to watching your bags as they go under the bus. Drivers and baggage guys sometimes can’t find room for all of the luggage PLUS freight and they will leave your bag behind for the next bus at times. Also for you smokers, don’t think you are being slick and smoking in the restroom. The driver opens his little side window and the smoke gets drawn from the back and he can smell it right off. I always warned folks not to smoke and told them in cases of smoking or being late to return from a break, that “they’d believe in the hereafter,” because they’d bel left at that stop. After I left. The driver’s performance is partially graded on being on time, and it pisses a driver off if you purposefully test him him/her. My number one rule was to treat people with respect until I am disrespected, and then action must be taken. I hated kicking people off, but I’d do it even a block from the final destination, unless I thought they were trying to get over on me about an unscheduled stop.
On the I-70 north route from Kansas City to Los Angeles, there are only two major stations in between, Denver and Las Vegas. Between Kansas City and Denver it's 600 miles, 10 hours in the middle of Kansas farms and eastern Colorado farms. From Denver to Las Vegas it's 800 miles of dead populated Utah deserts after Grand Junction. From Kansas City to Los Angeles it's 1,600 miles of farms and deserts. Do not drink a lot on this route if you don't like bus bathrooms. Public bathroom stops could be five to six hours apart.
You hit everything and it was very helpful for my first trip on greyhound in 25 yrs. I road from fayetteville to DC and the first leg was a shitshow. Luckily I was prepared after watching your video.
Iv done my time on Greyhound too I am actually taking one today! 🎉 Just watching this to get myself pumped for my trip my first tip is buy the ticket in advance!
I use to have a carry on and luggage underneath the bus, but now if I’m taking the greyhound I just take a carry on and no extra luggage. Mostly because I don’t have to worry about that luggage. Plus I can live out of a 45 L backpack.
Tip # 1 I have to say is buy you a cellphone charger that is solar powered at your local Walmarts if sold or online please sometimes they do not stock them in locally owned Walmart store chain's but they do the rechargable ones that has battery times for 3 charges which is rechargable at any plug ins at your pickup hub you wait at for greyhounds and for real here keep your bags near you at all times never trust no one with your personal stuff especially computer's and phones and identifications it's very easy for anyone to steal your Identity if they have the right scanning tools to hack your phone and computer too.
Tip #10 should be number one. Last I rode the bus we had a three hour delay and while on the road, the bus broke down and we had to wait longer. 😭 Horrible experience.
I have taken many Greyhound trips. Without fail, I have met some interesting kind people. And all 10 tips are valid. Plus I've seen a lot of people who had issues. I saw a woman in the Los Angeles station over 20 years ago at night pick pocket a little boy who was sleeping in the seat next to his mom (also asleep) and a guy walked up to her and smacked her on the face and made her put it back. Luckily the little boy wasn't aware of anything. As for the toilet: I take something like Imodium if the trip is several days long so I can avoid any extended time in the toilet if I can.
Having riding the Greyhound bus in Canada was a great times. Although the company is no more, the trips were fun, great tourist sights, I had seen many Asian tourists on the buses. The drivers were friendly and the buses clean. They ran on time, most of the time, other than things that were out of their control, crashes, weather, detours etc , but my time on the buses were great, same and prompt, I even had an uncle who drove for Greyhound from the 60s to the 80s 🙂
I just had the bright idea to travel via Greyhound for the hell of it. I can afford to fly but flying is ghetto asf these days. Anyway, this video is hilarious 🤣
I used to go Greyhound a number of times between 1971 and 1991. I used to like to sit in the back, so I could sip on some Whiskey and the Driver wouldn't know!
You make the best video ever when it come to riding on the greyhound every time i ride the bus i always ride close to the front and also when it comes to put my lauggen bag i always put a plastic bag and tie it on always but if i only going out of town for 2 days i just bring my book bag and always bring it with me on the bus and everywhere i go
Take sanitation wipes with you if you really need to use the bus toilets. And the only ones that mess up the toilets are the men. One bus driver actually told the men to have respect for the ladies and don't pee all over the seat.
We take sanitizing wipes and nitrile gloves in our carry-ons. I would advise against latex gloves, as latex allergies are far too common and I don't want to risk another person's health.
One time on Amtrak from Whitefish, Montana, ana a sweater and beef jerky was stolen out my bag. Nothing was ever stolen from Greyhound, and once on a plane to Freeport, Bahamas, some cheap packages of panty hose. Great advice. Korean Air was racist nightmare to Bali. Singapore Air and Singapore was the greatest.
Im traveling with five kids my ticket said 1142 us route none of the buses said those numbers an are bus never showed with those numbers like how do you know what bus to board

Both Amtrak and Southwest Airlines is cheaper, faster, more reliable and pleasant. Plenty of Freyhound buses mainly used for moving released prisoners to new locations. Same for drug addicts and homeless.
Hey Greyhound Guru, I bought a ticket with cash at a gas station round trip and now need to extend the trip departure day by one day. How much do they usually charge for this, and can I do this at the same location I bought the ticket. Cheers from the midwest!
There's nothing more disgusting than a Greyhound Station bathroom than the bathroom on a Greyhound bus. Highly recommend sitting as far away from the bathroom as possible. Put in earplugs if you don't want to hear the smokers getting off the bus every stop.
