Now that's some "flying by the seat of your pants" type stuff right there... I miss the good old days in shop class when our instructor that was missing several digits on one hand would do crazy stuff like this.
Well, that was an interesting experiment! It's always good to try new things, even if it doesn't work, we still learn from them. Nice save though! Heather 🇨🇦
I really try and this reminds me I must have another go, I was not happy with failing the first time and I have had a few ideas since on how to do it better, watch this space 😀
Mike you are always up to experiment. Prepared to take risks and see where the unknown path leads. This time though I was properly shocked - I mean, a metal spoon in a non-stick pan. The final piece though looked superb, the corpuscle shape really made it. Thanks for everything you do. (I am sure you will be the first to master the carbon/sulphur/potassium nitrate inlay before 5 November.)
One of your older videos Mike but I'm getting through them. Nice finished piece & a nice recovery / re-plan. Don't think I'll be going down the sulphur route when I'm up & running. The place must have been absolutely reeking 😅. Heading down your way in a few weeks for a wee break, we'll not as far really only to Berwick but it's in your neck of the woods. I'll need to find things & places to explore when I'm there. Any suggestions ?
Thanks! I don't get up that way much but the coastline is beautiful. Bambrough castle and Holy Island are the key attractions in the area. Have a great break, Mike
@@racheldray1057 That's strange, when it came up it said you can commented on a different video! Sorry, your comment was in the right place it's just RUclips got a little confused 🤣
Hi Mike Love the shape of this bowl, and the thinner inlay is very striking. Sorry the sulphur didn't work out but look forward to seeing you use the technique again, and the result. Treated myself to two videos today 🤭 lol Have a great evening
Thanks Fiona, I really must have another go at this, I think using a lead ladle will help as it will keep the heat better allowing the sulphur to stay fluid. Have a great day 😃
Allo Mike. You're getting bothered with loads of messages from me at the moment, but that's because I'm binging your content. I'm brand new to turning and learning lots from your videos, but I haven't figured out why sometimes you turn a tenon and other times a mortise. I'm sure there's a simple explanation. Cheers
Milliput to the rescue. Good call to use white Milliput to get better contrast than the yellow. The sulphur does not turn well. Too much dust for my liking, even if you were able to get a more consistent inlay. It is not easy to clean up all the sulphur dust. I love the chatoyence of sapele. Interesting bowl. Well done. Dave.
Thanks 👍You can't win them all, serves me right for trying to replicate something from 250 years ago and only lasted 50 years 😀. But I will still try again at some point in the future.
Hi Mike, I just had a thought. I wonder if you used syringe whether you could get the fine line that you need.!! Just thinking outside the box that’s all :-)
Wow!! The simplicity of the shape and the inlay really make that wood pop. It's so beautiful.
Thank you so much! 😀

Thanks Heather, I will try it again but not for a while 😂
Another amazing beautiful bowl😊
A Truly Gorgeous grain in that wood!❤
As I was watching at 1st, I thought, 'Sulfur!?', no way!, why!?
A lot came to mind😅
Great Work Mike!❤
Thanks, I need to have another go at this, I have lots of sulphur left 😃
Cool experiment. I had no idea that this was a thing. The end product is beautiful.
Yeah, there's so little information about it it's hard to replicate but I will try again, thanks.
Just from watching all wood worker and turners I have lately, I believe Sapeli is my favorite. It’s looks so smooth and silky.😊❤
It’s a beautiful wood with amazing colour changing in the light.
I appreciate the learning, by example. Thanks for sharing. Nicely finished.
Thanks Roger, glad you enjoyed it 😀
Love how experimental you are with new ideas and techniques!
I'm trying hard not to be the same as everyone else 😂. They all succeed, I don't mind failing.
Very brave to work with sulphur. You really do push the limits. Love the final result. ❤❤
I really try and this reminds me I must have another go, I was not happy with failing the first time and I have had a few ideas since on how to do it better, watch this space 😀
When you cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol the wood looked gorgeous. I’m a huge fan of high gloss finish on wood.
Thanks, sapele really can take a high shine, not turned any in ages, I must so another one 😀
Sounds like a bit of a trial by fire but I love the shape and the way it turned out in the end.
Thanks! 😃
Mike you should mix the sulphur with some potassium nitrate and a bit of charcoal 😉
haha that would certainly go down with a bang 😃
Didn't quite work out but the bowl looked great anyway, well done
Thanks Alan, the only way you learn is by trying 😀
This looks great but I was so worried about the sulphur! It turned out lovely tho :)
You and me both! next time it will go better :)
The chatoyancy! 😍
I know, sapele is pretty amazing for that 😀

Very interesting, and turned out quite lovely.
Glad you think so! 😀
Valiant effort, Mike. Still looks nice, though.
Thanks Hubert, I keep meaning to have another go at this see if I can do a better job 😃
Nice bowl my bowl often turn out differently then how I pitured it in my head.
Your brain may be looking at the wrong page, mine often does the same thing lol 😀

Hi Steve, if I can get a good safe way to hold the piece from the headstock use mortice, if I have to turn between centres then I use a tenon 😀
So nice!!
Thanks 👍

Hi Mike, I just had a thought. I wonder if you used syringe whether you could get the fine line that you need.!! Just thinking outside the box that’s all :-)
Possibly! May be worth a try 😁
Do you think if you used a syringe to do the sulphur that might have got it in everywhere?
I think it would have solidified inside the tube. I think a proper lead ladle that keeps hold of the heat may have helped more.
I Hope your shop was well ventilated!?😮
I bet it Smelled Real Good!?😂
Not as bad as you would think
Для чего можно использовать это изделие?
Anything, it's food safe 🤠
'If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.'
Exactly! 😀
I don't understand using sulfur, aside from the novelty. Why did they use it 250 years ago? Were there any benefits, to light on fire?
I can't really find much about it, I discovered the technique and wanted to try 😃
Was wondering if you had a fire extinguisher close by then it caught on fire :’) oh well. Hope you bought your wife a new spoon!
lol, I have fire safety precautions in place don't worry. My wife does not yet know about the spoon so shhhhh 😀
