    I have a Thermopop thermometer that I've been happy with, but I have convinced myself that I need a Thermopen Mk4.

    Love my new Mk4! My first use for it was when I tried stove-top sous vide for the first time. Perfect results, and so convenient!
    I was surprised that the F-to-C conversion instructions were in the quick start guide, and not in the bigger manual (that I first consulted). But once I knew how, that procedure was a breeze also. Very happy!

    I have learned that if you leave your Thermopen Mk4 in the pellet smoker it will melt. When my wife came out i was yelling dumb-ass, dumb-ass. She said " whats wrong? who is a dumb-ass" one look from me and it all became perfectly clear as I held the charred body of my Thermopen Mk4 in my tongs.

    one of the Mk4's best features as compared to the classic is the use of easy to find and inexpensive AAA batteries instead of watch batteries, Nice.

    The Mark 4 is on closeout with a big discount. It is being replaced with a yet to be described newer model. They have not announced cancellation of the bare bones Classic so at the moment the less features Classic is more expensive than the Mark 4. I would assume they will still be clearing out Mark 4's after the new model comes out. I bought my Classic on sale, years ago, just before they announced the Mark 4. They did not announce that the new Mark 4 was coming and I was disappointed that I did not know before buying the Classic. They say the reveal is before the end of June. I am really curious as to what improvements they have made. The Classic has been a great thermometer and matches the Mark 4 for speed and accuracy. My only complaint has been that sometimes it goes dead and I have to reseat the button cells, even though there is no visible corrosion and I wiped everything clean and the battery was far from dead. The last time I slightly increased spring tension on the battery contact and that seems to have solved the problem.

      Not really, the probe is still designed to be inseted or sumberged into something, like a steak or oil. It is not meant to measure a surface and would give you misleading readings.

      An IR gun/thermometer would actually be better suited for that purpose than the Thermopen.

    • @jeffreydeutsch7336
      @jeffreydeutsch7336 3 года назад

      IR gun for checking pan temp. Got mine from Thermoworks, as well. The regular Thermapen is made for immersion in a liquid or solid, however there are air and surface contact models of Thernapens available for those that might need those special features.

    Maybe its just me. I havent used it for cooking yet. It seems like the temperature goes up faster then it goes down. Is that the case with this. When I do the water boil test, it pretty much read 212 in a second but when I take the probe out of the water, it takes much longer to go back to room temp. If thats the case, then wouldn't that affect the reading when you start at the top and continue thru the meat. It will read accurately from the top to the middle, to the bottom but on the way back out I would think it would be slower to read the center temp accurately because the probe is still hotter from the bottom temp. Am I correct on this?

      Little late, but essentially the tip will heat to a temperature, then cool off. Simple right? the principle behind what you noticed is similar to that of copper pans - they are so good because they transfer heat so well. Liquid also transfers heat very well, but air does not. It will take a longer time to adjust to the air temp b/c it takes a longer time for the energy to dissipate from the tip of the probe when there is only air surrounding it. If you were to take the 212 degree reading, and place it into a cool bowl of water, it would change almost instantly because the heat transfer is so much better than that of air. Hope this explains it.

      Air is a good thermal insulator, so the thermometer will cool down slowly. If you take it from boiling water straight to an ice bath, the reading will go down much faster. Or even a raw piece of meat.

  • @hal9000xxl

    Yeah but after like 30 sec after flipping top half cools down so you can't really tell where is center because the more you keep pulling it out the lower temperature gets. Been lowest at the very top...

  • @DrLumpyDMus
    @DrLumpyDMus 2 года назад

    You get "Many questions" about why the temp of the ThermaPen doesn't start at zero? Really? I don't know of any consumer thermometers of any kind that "Start at zero". I really can't imagine that being such a concern to the average consumer.
