    I was really surprised by the Miata. I'd never really understood the appeal, that was until a good friend got herself a 99 model about 4 years ago. The first surprise was when I found that at 6-4 I could actually fit and fit comfortably. LOL! But it was so much fun to drive. I remember spending a couple of weeks with it on and around the country lanes of North Carolina and Virginia and having a blast, so yep, I get it now!

      That's pretty much the story all of friends had when I let them drive my '96 base model. "How does this thing rate so high in review" they'd ask, then they'd drive it and get out and say "I get it." Or if I was in the car with them they'd say "What? I'm only going 40mph? Feels like I'm doing 70! That's awesome."

    • @andycalifornia426
      @andycalifornia426 2 года назад

      You've got to take inflation into consideration (I think USD has halved in value since 2000) -- so they're not necessarily appreciating at the rate that it may seem at first sight.
      Pretty much any car that people think is worth driving 30 years after it's made is going to appreciate, but of course the rules of supply and demand apply, so given that so many of these were made, it will never be a real investment tool like classic Ferraris. Unless you stuff it in the garage with 1000 miles on the odo and forget about it for another 30 years.

    I have an '01 with the 6-speed and I have to say Miatas are awesome... I actually switched from a '00 BMW M Roadster. Spend some time with a Miata and you'll quickly see why people like them so much: they're hilariously fun to drive. For those who are interested, the 6-speed is a close ratio box, so just like the 5-speed there's no overdrive. I'll be the first to admit that 4 hours up CA's I-5 at ~4k RPM can get a bit tiresome but that lack of an overdrive is probably a good choice given the character of the car and the limited output of the engine.

    This was always my favourite year of Miata, it really has some stylin' cues taken direct from the FD Rx-7.

    • @hondata974
      @hondata974 10 лет назад

      I never thought of that and I agree, no wonder I kept think the 2006 and newer models felt like it had some stylin cues from the RX-8, I prefer the RX-7 not only for how it is more powerful and more fun, but it is better looking so that is probably why I prefer the older Miatas over the new ones because of its looks, although I prefer the older pop-up headlight unit versions better, but this one shown in the video in silver looks terrific and fun to drive.

    • @ParadoxdesignsOrg
      @ParadoxdesignsOrg 10 лет назад

      agree totally. I think both the MX's and Rx's share a lot of cue styles throughout the years.. and the Rx7 styling just cannot be beaten. It's perfect. almost.

    Amazing. Your maintenance was exactly what my 96 was. But I have 220,000 miles on it now. :-) Timing belt a little over 100k miles. Water pump while I was there. Radiator at about 150k miles. Throwout bearing and new clutch at 210,000. Also due for a new top. That's it other than standard maintenance. I have it in my garage now preparing to strip it down, replace all the rubber and gaskets, a new top, fix some dings, get the seats re-covered, and then drive it another 200,000 miles. :-)

      +Austin R. I know that the thrust bearing (I think thats what its called) suffers on Miatas as you have to clutch in to start the vehicle. But because the vehicle isn't on the bearings are not lubricated. FlyinMiata sell a little clip that goes over your clutch pedal switch which allows you to start the vehicle without the clutch pedal pressed which will over the years add a lot of life back into those bearings.

      A lot of people really suck at driving manual transmissions, even if they have done it for years! Slipping the clutch too long, holding the clutch in at stops instead of putting it in N and releasing the clutch, Revving too high before slipping the clutch to launch in first under NORMAL driving. Every time I drive with someone else (other than guys who race) I realize that I'm a pretty awesome driver.

    • @paulregener7016
      @paulregener7016 4 года назад

      @@JLUDE01 oh my god tell me about it, I took my 95 to get smogged and the guy who had to pull into the shop revved the car to at least 3k to get it in the shop, while engaging the clutch the entire time. Most people just don't care I believe, things don't last forever and when you do the work yourself, you tend to be a bit more religious on making your parts last. People just don't care because they don't work on cars. Working on cars changes your perspective in maintaining and how you drive the vehicle day to day.

  • @HammerRocks

    I agree, the MX-5 is a classic but not really a collectable [yet]. Their popularity has meant there are many of them out there and their reliability means, most them are still on the road. So there will always be plenty to choose from when buying it second hand - making it a buyers market. I think the MX-5 is like the MG of the 60s. Its a classic but prices are relatively low and stable. But who knows, in 3-4 decades and with many being used for racing, perhaps fewer and fewer road worthy great condition MX-5s will be available. This should drive prices up particularly on the original NA model.

    I had the same model and year...loved it! This generation reminded me of Jaguar's styling at the time. Sure, it could've used more hp but it took corners like nothing (especially after I installed aftermarket springs). My only gripe were the taller seats...I prefer the shorter ones offered in the 2000 model. The Miata's fit and finish was also a step above the MR2 Spyder (I had owned both).

    The most collectible is easily the special model that Mazda made to celebrate their 1991 Le Mans win. Only 22 was build and not even all of them was in the cheered orange/green paint scheme of the winning Mazda 787B race car, but they all had special body kits, a BBR Turbo and special OZ rims.

    My car is an 01 as well, but with the six speed gearbox. I honestly wish the sixth gear was an actual overdrive as I'm turning something like 4,000 rpm at about 80 mph, which is keeping up with traffic on Florida interstates. The only problem with mine has been a clutch slave cylinder, which I fixed myself with some effort and some interior cosmetic bits like worn seats and worn wheel & shift knob, the latter two replaced with wooden components from a special edition that I refurbished myself. My biggest problem is that I live in central Florida and the roads are all flat and straight. I love this car!

    Knowledgeable Miata owners do not lock their doors: it's like the first rule of ownership. As with all convertibles, locking the doors just invites top slashing. 1. Don't leave anything in the cabin or glovebox. 2. Disconnect the trunk release in the cabin. 3. Store valuables in the trunk. That includes registration and proof of insurance. It would have been helpful to tell viewers this.
    "There is no excuse" for the gas mileage? Well, yes there is. The transmission is geared for performance, not for fuel economy, you can't have it both ways. It is, as you say, a 'sports car.'
    Would overdrive help? I think only on the flattest stretches: it is not a powerful engine and already struggles on long hills in 5th, requiring downshifting.
    Only limited editions collectible? In fact, low mileage first generation Miatas are gaining value just sitting in the garage. Thus, slowly but surely, becoming collectible.
    "Cute little keychain?"
    Otherwise, a good general overview of Miatas for the uninitiated.

    Great video. I bought my 2001LS in RED new and still have it with 101k on the clock. I think another Miata model that will be a collectible will be the 2001 special edition in British Racing Green. When I bought mine I went in to get that one but at the last minute, I bought the roadster red. I should have bought both of them as they had mistakenly put an add in the paper advertising either one at dealer invoice and they did honor the ad - and that was in April; not the end of the top-down season! Mine still looks virtually brand new and drives the same.

    The highway speed is like torture to NA and NB because they are geared to squeeze power from their little engines, actually the "highway speed in Japan its 80km/h (that's 50mph) so.....

    You mentioned a couple of Miata special editions that may be future classics but I think you omitted one - the 1994 R-Package cars. Only 1218 were made and they were designed to to straight from the showroom to the track. They were lighter weight than the stock cars and came with a Torsen limited slip differential and some cool aerodynamic pieces.

    6:23 if we're talking about NBs and newer then no. But the NA will definitely be a collectible classic which is already pretty expensive and the prices just keep getting higher, at least in my country they're super rare

    I made the mistake of buying a 2003 European version (live in Europe) that came standard with a 1.6 instead of the US 1.8. While the handling is still great, the 1.6 in the heavier NB just doesn't cut it power wise in the mountains which is the main reason to get one. My 1990 back in US is actually much more enjoyable to drive. Waiting for Sept 3 for the new reveal!

    Think your car has an issue if you're only getting mid 20s mpg. My 2001 NB B8 gives me around 35mpg (I'm using the larger UK gallon, which would be more like 30mpg US) in a combination of city & freeway driving.

    You average in the mid 20s for fuel? I only get 12 mpg on mine! My mechanic is replacing the coil pack and filter on it tomorrow. Hopefully, that makes a difference. My Honda Civic used to get 35 mpg! And I agree that it's not fast, but it's definitely fun. I never speed anymore in this car, and that's just fine with me. My Honda used to speed without me even noticing. Btw, do you still have it? We're going on 18 years now...still love it as much as ever.

    I am very sorry to hear about your top being slashed, Emme. I hope that the person who did that gets some bad karma coming his/her way.
    Every time that I see one of your Fast Lane Car videos, it takes me a minute to realize that is what I am watching, I always think of Roadfly when I see you.
    By the way, I have had the pleasure of driving my friend's former 1995 5-speed Miata and his former 2001 6-speed. I think that the 5-speed is a much more refined transmission than the 6-speed was in 2001. Granted, 2001 was one of the first years for the 6-speed, if not the first so I understand. 6th gear always was difficult to hit and felt like an afterthought in the design of the transmission. In contrast, with the 5-speed, every gear was exactly where you thought it should be- the throws had great feel and the transmission felt very precise.
    By the way, if you have Comprehensive coverage on your insurance, it will cover the vandalism of your car. If you do not, I would add it, it is a VERY inexpensive coverage and covers things like vandalism, theft, glass, and weather/flood damage.
    I would love to see more of your personal cars if you get a chance to make some videos for them, as well as Roman's and Nathan's.

  • @Angel-HC
    @Angel-HC 10 лет назад

    No excuse it should get better gas mileage? It's all in the gearing. If they put some tall Honda civic gears and made the thing rev low at freeway speeds, it wouldn't be any fun to drive. It has those short gears and low final drive to give the sensation of high acceleration at lower speeds. And also to make use of its low power. 25 miles per gallon in a car this fun is nothing to complain about.
