Hello, sorry I didn't see this sooner. The cable routing is a bit fussy and it may need to be moved a little to find the sweet spot. I found that my latch worked pretty good right away, but it wasn't perfect, so I jiggled the cable a little and it worked much better. You could try lubing the cable by dripping a few drops cable oil down the inside of the cable jacket if it still binds a little. Best of luck!
Hello, sorry to hear about this. I gave it some thought and neglected to reply. I can only think of two possibilities, the first one is that the ball end that fits into the tailgate handle may not have engaged fully as I noticed that they can be really tight and my second thought is that the cable routing itself may alter the pulling strength of the cable end, so I hate to suggest it as it sounds silly, but perhaps jiggling the cable or trying an alternate routing may help. Sorry I can't be of more help, but getting an assistant to operate the door while you sit in the back with the access panel off may show the issue as well. Best of luck!
Hello, sorry to hear this is causing issues for you. I replied to a previous commenter about a somewhat similar issue and hopefully it will help, "I dug around a little online and it sounds like the metal rod that physically connects the key lock on the tailgate to the locking mechanism at the bottom of the door is hanging up on the lower latch that the cable to the release handle is connected to and that is making things not work properly. It seems that changing the latch can slightly alter where the cable normally sits and this can interfere with the lower linkage. The good news is that it seems like it is fixable. The best description I can find is very detailed and can be found on Car Gurus by searching in Google for, "rear latch does not unlock after replacing trunk latch 2000 sienna". I had to read the description in there by jphanley2 a couple times and I eventually saw what he was talking about and it seems that a slight tweak of the lower linkage can get things working again, but read through it and see if it makes sense. The area you will be working on can be seen at 2:45 - 3:15 in my video, but I did not actuate the lock in my video which would be the part that is causing issues for you. Hopefully you have a working power door lock key fob that will allow you to actuate the lock to make it easier to see what is hanging up. I wish you the best of luck!"
need some help. I replaced latch, but now when I engage lock to unlock latch doesnt pull cable. I have to release cable from the latch ,pull lock rod up then pull on lower latch to pop open door from inside. is there a way I can disable the rear lock?

My pleasure, and with the interior plastic tailgate cover off it is a good opportunity to replace any burnt out tail light bulbs or reverse bulbs if you have any that need replacing. Thank you for watching!
Absolutely incredible video start to finish in 10 minutes. I fixed it in my 99 Toyota Sienna without a hitch… perfect and smooth. Thank you so much for your time and effort!
Thank you very much for the detailed instruction! sometimes you feel life is good with all the nice people like this author who helps the people they never know. The most difficult part for me is to remove the plastic panel and put it back. It's easier to put it back with the door open and do it outside the card. Everything else is a smooth sail.
I'm very happy this helped! I totally agree about replacing the plastic panel, I think the first time I did it I needed three tries and it took me a long time. I got desperate the last time and took off all of the plastic pieces around the rear window and that helped a little, but it was still tricky. Thanks for posting, best wishes!
Andrew I want to thank you for your video. It will save me money I do not have.
My pleasure, hopefully the new latch will last for years to come!
Best video on YT for this. 👍
Thanks, you are too kind!
Very helpful video. I just did mine with the help of this video. 👍
I'm very happy it helped!
Andrew, thanks for the video. Mine is on a 2003 Lexus RX300. I'm asuming the instructions are the same as on the Toyota Sienna.
I will give it a try.
I have not had a good look at the liftgate on an RX300, but I suspect that you are right and they are similar. Best wishes, I hope it goes smoothly!
I appreciate you
If the cable is not moving with the latch correctly even after being in position. It means the cable needs to be replaced?

My actuator is stuck in the locked position 😢
Yikes, that is an actual problem. Hopefully you have a local auto wrecker that can sell you a functioning used one.
Did everything but now it won't open. Opened the first couple times but then was unable to open the next day
