I remember back in the day this game and inFamous were butting heads for popularity, though I think they’re both great in their own right. inFamous’ story was a really fun take on the superhuman origin story with a bunch of neat twists and turns, on top of (albeit some slightly janky) fun parkour and powers to play with, while Prototype was a full on power fantasy that was insanely fun to play, but had a lack luster story.
It's a shame we never got More Games or additional content from these two Franchises either because they ended or Corporate meddling. Would be Great to see a reboot or a remake from Both these franchises

I feel like the story in prototype 1 is really good its just how they present it is really bad and uninteresting, i cant stop thinking about the potential movie or tv show adaptation. Funny thing is that prototype 1 had potentially a very interesting story but very poor execution and prototype 2 had a very bland story but executed a lot better, combat as well, prototype 1 had such a promising combat but it really lacked balance in weaponry and enemies and felt dissapointing at times while prototype 2 toned down your freedom in combat but delivered a lot more balanced and in my opinion more enjoyable gameplay
Imagine how different it would have been if he had simply waited patiently to talk to a nice coroner and pay his funeral bill.

Prototype is still my guilty pleasure game to this day. If I’m bored or having a bad day I hop on and just run around the city and go crazy, it’s super therapeutic
I always love playing NG+ on this, you are THE PROTOTYPE at the start and literally nothing can stop you if you have unlocked all upgrades (pretty easy if you have played NG+ alot)
i like limiting my abilities - the game becomes entirely different if you don’t use defensive powers or get any health upgrades on a new hard save, goin around killing everything in one hit and not taking any damage just feels… bland, you know?
@@we-must-liveProblem with that is that around the time you actually start unlocking all of the super cool feeling powers and abilities is when the game's difficulty spikes from 20 to fucking 800, not giving many chances to actually test them out without the military forcing 20 rockets up your ass at once. At least in new game plus it gives a fully upgraded Alex some room to actually stretch his legs a bit.

but really, you get those powers at that point because you NEED them to win, not because they look cool or you wanna fill in all the upgrades... all it takes is learning how to dodge missiles (i.e. stay away from roads & buildings to stop the blast radius from getting ya, and dodge perpendicular to it's trajectory a second before it'll hit you) and then you CAN fly around wrecking helicopters with the flying kick + cannonball combo!
@@we-must-live Difficulty in Prototype is not up to player skill. It's pretty much all determined by either blind luck or cheese tactics. In other words, just spamming devastaters. Missiles are far too many in number to react to, melee attacks from infected enemies are far too quick to accurately dodge, and all the boss enemies either stunlock you to death or just one shot you like a Soulsbourne boss. The game takes the difficulty out of your hands.

i recently finished the first game and i need to say something. we need a reboot or a remake of this franchise, the open world games where characters has crazy and lethal superpowers has the potential to make more stories and future mechanics.

Prototype was the first M-Rated, single player game I ever got for myself. I remember reading about it in Game Informer magazine a year before its release and back before some of Alex Mercer's designs were finalized. But I knew pretty quickly that I wanted it. It was my own, gory, edgy Spiderman experience. I got it for PS3 and played the crap of it. Years later, I got it _again_ on Steam and continue to revisit every few years after. I can't ever fully put it down, but I'm glad for that. Also, thank you for making a video about it in current day. It makes me happy knowing other people still like this game and are willing to spotlight its strengths as well as critique its flaws.

I still remember a lucid dream where i CLEARLY was in the city from Prototype 2 and i could climb the buildings and ignore the i dont remember what they are infected enemies cause now im in control of the dream. Got up a scraper, looked down, felt free, woke up.

to be completely honest, while i agree that it is a pretty edgy game that doesnt have the most groundbreaking story, i think it - and Alex Mercer's line deliveries via Barry Pepper - deserves a bit more credit. i get the sense that the story and the gameplay arent integrated at all, and then of course the more appealing and fun choice is to fly around and chop people up and go nuts. but i do really enjoy the military horror being told in the story. its a shame it doesnt really pick up until the third act, but i do get the sense that the game is at least trying to talk about something instead of being nothing but edge and edge (like the original The Boys comic for example.) the bad guy on the infected side was an innocent expecting mother whose brain was ravaged by a virus secretly spread in her hometown, and she and her child became nothing more but military assets. our main protagonist is a doppelganger of an amoral scientist who ends up becoming more heroic than the human he was accidentally created from.
but i dont really blame most people for skipping the cutscenes. the story isnt exactly told in the most coherent way thanks to the puzzle piece plot. overall its an amazing idea to me but the execution wasnt perfect.

Most people, like the vid's author, probably think it's just a delusional edgy game and that the story doesn't deserve much attention when, for example, there's quite alot of great lore to be uncovered from people of interest to better make you understand what's happening. I doubt characters in this game are that much different from how people in important positions behave in real life and that's what makes this game realistic to me in that sense.

Man i remember how popular this game was and it was basically your go to backround game in youtube videos all the way up to 2015. Good times
He was a monster, a murderer, a terrorist, all these things... Yet Mercer's journey became a cult classic, much like inFamous 1 and 2 alongside it. As someone going through inFamous, I'll DEFINITELY play Prototype as it's been sitting in my steam library for a while now. Having to consume to stay alive and getting more cool powers alongside it is genuinely badass.

Prototype was and still is a great game I love how the abilities and stuff are being able to mutate to take the form of someone you absorbed or getting blades for arms while being able to cover yourself in armor made from your Infected flesh by hardening it or whatever it is just so damn cool honestly the Character in Prototype 1 Alex Mercer reminds me of Carnage with some of the stuff he can do
I may hate the final boss of this game. But the rest of it is my kind of edgy!
Musclemass worked for me. I managed to corner him and a barrage of combos was finishing him easily.
The trick is to throw missiles and other objects at him. He has damage resistance to your powers so don't fight him in CQC.
I still remember the time where i don't have to think much of anything when playing the game other than the feeling to be so overpowered to a point where I would also liked this kind of powers to myself
Judging by your descriptions, the story doesnt sound bad at all, and honestly the ending dialogue, while edgy, isnt particularly cringe, just accurate. No idea how the rest of the dialogue is as I have not played it, but id say it simply sounds like a solid dark power fantasy game, guilt trip and all.
I swear, the cutscenes have NONE emotion at all😂. One scene is literaly Dana: "Oh sh't, you look bad, ANYWAYS go there, that's your next target."
Apart from this, the story is pretty much Resident Evil, but you have Virus X.
I remember playing this wholeheartedly as a kid, I was so into it that I would voice act the character and act so edgy.
Yeah it was cringe, but it's still a good time, but goddamn it was cringe.
Goddamn it, I had completely forgotten how difficult this game was! I remember I eventually managed to complete it, and in the end this game only left me with good memories as the gameplay was the only thing I remember from it. The only part of the story that I remember was when Alex Mercer goes into a military base disguised as a soldier, and then a gas is leaked to catch him over there.
By the way, how did you feel about a game where the main character has the same name as you? Did you feel like you were controlling yourself?

Huge studios have bought so many company’s and then destroyed them, I feel like it’s a huge reason why we don’t get any games anymore, they are all working in the call of duty mines.
I missed the good o'l days where game devs made edgy action games. They felt like real video games instead of some cinematic walking simulator crap. Those games are not real games.
Honestly, Prototype was such a great idea, I really loved the lore and I really felt powerful once unlocking everything, I wouldn't mind a remake or a third installment if anyone cares enough.

Probably unintentional but I love how the most effective strategy for the final boss is to throw stuff at him. Just like real evolution.
The story was pretty good compared to other games, i liked it when I played games back then. Every other story was copy and paste bs that just drags on and is easy. But this was a mystery that you couldnt just assume before it was understood
The only problem I remember having with the game was the Elizabeth Greene bossfight. Holy hell, the Supreme Hunter was a breeze compared to that.

Without spoilers, It's basically Alex travelling the world, meeting all kinds of people, but gets betrayed by one after another until he finally loses his hope for humanity.
Elizabeth had Redlight not blacklight. Alex was Blacklight itself and Elizabeth was only the host of redlight not it herself.
The time you spend editing is paying off. I laughed the whole time while learning about the game.
I literally played a pirated copy of this when I was 15 and got dialogue in another language. So, I never actually experienced the edgy dialogue or know what the hell the story was about. But no joke, best gameplay.

Prototype is the Venom game we never got.
When I first played Prototype, I felt like I was basically playing as Carnage from Spider-Man.
Alex and Carnage have very similar abilities. The only huge difference I can think of is that Carnage can’t make zombies and he doesn’t gain the memories of his victims.

To know that Radical were developing Spider-Man 4 before that movie was taken out back and mercy killed. A development build exists and they planned on literally just reworking Prototype (same New York assets and all) into a Spider-Man game, and it looked phenomenal. Shame it wasn't meant to be, cause a Prototype esque Spider-Man game would slap so hard. Take the absurdity of Web of Shadows and mix it with a more realistic tone and look with a dash of webbing versions of some of Alex's moves to make them less ultraviolent and you've got yourself a stunning sounding game
Loved this as a kid Replayed twice when i was like 5 or 6 but kept getting stuck on the first elizabeth green fight where shes that giant worm type thing, even went back to the game at 18 or 19 just last year or so and even still that part was tough as shit. Took me like a good hour and a half to just chip away at her while i healed

Yeah the twist of the virus becoming Alex would've been more impactful if the story was actually.... good. Like I was reading on the fan wiki a few months ago and was shocked that that actually happened because I don't remember the story putting that much emphasis on it
The funniest thing is that I actually did get [Prototype] on the 360 when it was in a bargain bin in target.
I love Alex in the same way I love Vergil in DMC3. Both are edgelords with similarly brooding dialogue, but they back up that aesthetic by being *tangible threats* both in gameplay and the story.
