I cant believe how much of a radical difference this podcast has made in my life. Im eternally greatful soaking up all the game knowledge and wisdom i can get right now.
My Notes Intro 0:0 - 1:00:26 *manuals get granular for how to do jobs *a leader potentially looks from the outside in a detached way to the cliques and learns - the perspective is necessary *a leader doesn’t quit *non traditional but forcefully requiring environments spawn worthwhile and valuable ideas *a hard head will learn when it gets hurt - a correct frame of mind will allow more or faster learning **luck is the ability to place yourself within benefiting situations with an unconscious guide *people don’t always remember things right - experience is the best teacher - first time learning may produce a bias - bias are hard to recognize and undo - question yourself: “is what i know actually correct?” *Jocko learned to detach when he had to gain leadership - arrogance may lead to mutiny, attitudes reflect the leaders emotion ~no one wants to like a jerk - humility increases cooperation and boosters leadership - brow-beaters will destroy any attempt at an idea ~ an attempt at the right time will potentially present opportunity *discrepancy will produce understanding if looker for *A leader supports, doesn’t need to make every call - humility in action produces sincere results *a desire to “be the guy” is strong but is long-term bad but short-term good - the feeling or ego should be held back *flexibility in action or reaction is required - The ego can prevent cooperation - expectation and communication leads into cooperation Power of Relationships: 1:00:30 - 1:44:30 **results are not achieved solo - relationships build plans -the better the relationship the better the communication *approach a leader with relationships in mind - put the onus on yourself as to why an idea doesn’t make sense EX: “you know boss I really want to support the plan to best of my ability, but I’m having a hard time understanding how to execute this part of it, can you explain why you want it done that way so I can get it right?” - address your approach to determine the potential gain. ~a minimal gain may not be valuable or worth the effort - is the approach based in ego? - will the relationship be improved? *Don’t be selfish or a “brown nosed” - the cure is to just care about the other person - you cannot fake it - be consistent *performance will build relationships - “I am the one who makes things happen.” - performance proves objection *tell the truth - “we are just going to do this because this is the easiest way to improve.” **The long game provides results - heavy hands are short-term and suicidal - nothing matters except your long-term success *determination provides a leader fuel *Mutiny is highly unlikely to succeed Ego: 1:44:30 - 2:19:30 *self confidence is subordinating the ego - be able to back down - power exists in the ability of a person *have knowledge - be able to operate people within their respective abilities - ask to learn, it shows humility * take extreme ownership - ensure layers of plans for success - extreme ownership creates an acre of preemptive ownership *do not do everything *be the guy who acts - the leader will move first an determine when to call for support *enhance a situation by supporting - progress when halted requires leadership *be trusted and trust others - again, do not do everything Don’t Care: 2:19:30 - 2:25:30 *allow things to happen - read between the lines *”that sounds good” Find Importance: 2:25:40 - 2:25:40 *be knowledgeable of discrimination - understand external and internal change - asses the gain of each choice *detach and elevate - can it cause failure? - how bad will it get when left alone? - allow subordinates to solve low level problems Principles: 2:27:40 - 2:42:14 *leadership takes time *discipline takes care of people - push them hard - force knowledge - prepare for action - optimal discipline is self discipline *Pride does not allow sub-standards - a team with pride provides more - giver opportunity to earn pride ~ unity, strength, and perseverance *do not allow “yes men” - speak up when something doesn’t make sense - a team needs cooperation - “yes men” are suicidal during failure - speak properly *exceptions - a subordinate is never at fault for the team - a team can provide under bad leaders ~ people can prevail without defined roles as a leader Post Comments: 2:42:14 - the end *buy good jeans *join the martial arts *improve the country Completed February 2nd

You should try looking for a sense of a humor while you’re at it... or maybe you can just keep repeating the same joke for the next 4 years that was only mildly funny the first time
What about a Leader only cares about certain people on the team and puts a select few below the others on purpose. Without letting them advance or guide them or educating or train them properly?
2:04:08 - If I am the leader of my marriage and I lose the battle, divorce, does that mean I must own the whole deal? Thank God I was sitting down and drinking a beautiful cup of coffee ☕️ in Rainy Seattle and I guess you may have a point. Carry on battle...Oss
You were saying to “lead from the rear”, but what you were really saying is to let the team lead itself, unless it’s necessary for you to lead. Those are different things, you always lead from the front.
Jocko, here's my question: You state that you and your teammates from SEAL Team #1 mutinied against your leader because he was such a bad leader (the worst you've ever had). Knowing what you know now, if you were back in that situation as a young SEAL, how would you handle it? Would you still mutiny, or would you try and help make him a successful leader?
Here’s a situation that actually happened. Guy is in the airforce. Is the EX BF of my wife but my fiancé at the time. Was upset he couldn’t get her back. Didn’t want to accept she moved on. Etc. drives from Texas to Florida Buys a gun. Next day on 2014 Christmas morning breaks in her home. Murders her parents in cold blood. Attempt to kill her and her sibilings..... he ends up running off. Shoots himself while driving on the I-10 .... dead on the scene of crash. Was STILL in the airforce. Posed no problem at his job. And did throw any vibes that he was a fucked up individual. No one knew he had abused and raped her for years while they were together.... he murdered 2 people on Christmas morning.... is his team leader/squad leader responsible for his actions ? If he is. Then why didn’t that leader pay for the funeral costs? Or why didn’t he help out to clean the blood stained house his subordinate left?

My Notes
Intro 0:0 - 1:00:26
*manuals get granular for how to do jobs
*a leader potentially looks from the outside in a detached way to the cliques and learns
- the perspective is necessary
*a leader doesn’t quit
*non traditional but forcefully requiring environments spawn worthwhile and valuable ideas
*a hard head will learn when it gets hurt
- a correct frame of mind will allow more or faster learning
**luck is the ability to place yourself within benefiting situations with an unconscious guide
*people don’t always remember things right
- experience is the best teacher
- first time learning may produce a bias
- bias are hard to recognize and undo
- question yourself: “is what i know actually correct?”
*Jocko learned to detach when he had to gain leadership
- arrogance may lead to mutiny, attitudes reflect the leaders emotion
~no one wants to like a jerk
- humility increases cooperation and boosters leadership
- brow-beaters will destroy any attempt at an idea
~ an attempt at the right time will potentially present opportunity
*discrepancy will produce understanding if looker for
*A leader supports, doesn’t need to make every call
- humility in action produces sincere results
*a desire to “be the guy” is strong but is long-term bad but short-term good
- the feeling or ego should be held back
*flexibility in action or reaction is required
- The ego can prevent cooperation
- expectation and communication leads into cooperation
Power of Relationships: 1:00:30 - 1:44:30
**results are not achieved solo
- relationships build plans
-the better the relationship the better the communication
*approach a leader with relationships in mind
- put the onus on yourself as to why an idea doesn’t make sense
EX: “you know boss I really want to support the plan to best of my ability, but I’m having a hard time understanding how to execute this part of it, can you explain why you want it done that way so I can get it right?”
- address your approach to determine the potential gain.
~a minimal gain may not be valuable or worth the effort
- is the approach based in ego?
- will the relationship be improved?
*Don’t be selfish or a “brown nosed”
- the cure is to just care about the other person
- you cannot fake it
- be consistent
*performance will build relationships
- “I am the one who makes things happen.”
- performance proves objection
*tell the truth
- “we are just going to do this because this is the easiest way to improve.”
**The long game provides results
- heavy hands are short-term and suicidal
- nothing matters except your long-term success
*determination provides a leader fuel
*Mutiny is highly unlikely to succeed
Ego: 1:44:30 - 2:19:30
*self confidence is subordinating the ego
- be able to back down
- power exists in the ability of a person
*have knowledge
- be able to operate people within their respective abilities
- ask to learn, it shows humility
* take extreme ownership
- ensure layers of plans for success
- extreme ownership creates an acre of preemptive ownership
*do not do everything
*be the guy who acts
- the leader will move first an determine when to call for support
*enhance a situation by supporting
- progress when halted requires leadership
*be trusted and trust others
- again, do not do everything
Don’t Care: 2:19:30 - 2:25:30
*allow things to happen
- read between the lines
*”that sounds good”
Find Importance: 2:25:40 - 2:25:40
*be knowledgeable of discrimination
- understand external and internal change
- asses the gain of each choice
*detach and elevate
- can it cause failure?
- how bad will it get when left alone?
- allow subordinates to solve low level problems
Principles: 2:27:40 - 2:42:14
*leadership takes time
*discipline takes care of people
- push them hard
- force knowledge
- prepare for action
- optimal discipline is self discipline
*Pride does not allow sub-standards
- a team with pride provides more
- giver opportunity to earn pride
~ unity, strength, and perseverance
*do not allow “yes men”
- speak up when something doesn’t make sense
- a team needs cooperation
- “yes men” are suicidal during failure
- speak properly
*exceptions
- a subordinate is never at fault for the team
- a team can provide under bad leaders
~ people can prevail without defined roles as a leader
Post Comments: 2:42:14 - the end
*buy good jeans
*join the martial arts
*improve the country

Dude. "Lead from the rear" is clearly a metophor for "let the team lead its self"
Theyre not different things Christopher Simple...
"Always" is an absolute...and the only explanation for that phrase is, it sounds 'right' but doesn't hold up logically to ALWAYS lead from the front.
