      cars in Denmark are taxed at 150% their value. Buying a car requires a considerable budget, hence why cycling and environmentally friendly alternatives have developed so much. In Denmark executive cars are a rare sight, indeed many cars are quite old compared to other western European countries. Furthermore, the danish society is pretty homogeneous and egalitarian and there's no much visible difference between wage classes and it's considered rude and poor to show off your financial wealth.

    Back in the late 1980s-90s, I used to manufacture undersea fibre-optic cables. It's a fairly straightforward process, but takes several stages, At 3:16 he shows a well armoured cable, and we sometimes added and even thicker stage of armouring, which you wouldn't be able to hold in one hand. For most of my career I joined two cable ends together, mainly in a repeaterless connection [unamplified]. The signal loss had to be practically zero as equipment measured the signal from the opposite ends of the cable. I was involved in the UK - Denmark cable and one of my repeaterless joints held the record for minimal signal loss, at the time. I have no idea whether it has been broken since. I sometimes miss it as it was a great job and you knew you were doing something really important for world communications.

    • @lele-wp2hs
      @lele-wp2hs 4 года назад +1

      @@BattousaiHBr Problem with that is latency issues, cables still reign supreme due to their ability to transfer data at such speed and latency, something you are currently unable to do with sat internet, even if it's SpaceX' program - which still serves a good purpose, but they're not replacing anything, just helping those who do not have access.

    • @BattousaiHBr
      @BattousaiHBr 4 года назад

      @@lele-wp2hs i work with telecoms and latency has nothing to do with the issue spacex will face, their biggest issue will be weather interference. higher frequency signals suffer a lot of attenuation from bad weather.
      you are used to high orbit satellites (such as geostationary orbit) and that's why latency is terrible, but the spacex ones are very low orbit and will provide very good latency. in fact, because light travels at ~98% speed through air but only ~2/3 through optical fibers, for longer distance destinations you'd theoretically get better latency through spacex's satellite constellation than through existing intercontinental cables.

    • @BattousaiHBr
      @BattousaiHBr 4 года назад

      @@maazkalim it will certainly happen every once in a while, which will result in the effective nonrecoverable destruction of the satellite, but it doesn't happen very often and the network is designed to handle a bit of failover. there is no risk of them falling and hitting someone in the head because they are going too fast and would be incinerated on reentry due to the air pressure.
      also because the satellites are very low orbit, they will lose altitude and burn up on reentry in a few years anyway, which means they will be constantly relaunching new ones for replacement.

    One part that wasn't mentioned that i think a lot of people aren't aware of:
    Most fiber deployments like that are not just firing a single stream of data (currently up to 100 Gbps) down a fiber, but use multiplexing (usually Dense Wave Division Multiplexing, DWDM) to fire many streams down the same fiber on different wavelengths. Last i looked at it, my old employer used gear capable of 6.4 Tbps per fiber pair.

      damaging the cables, yes.
      i work at an ISP and it also amazes me how inconspicuous these intercontinental cables that are responsible for literally dozens of millions of people's are. sometimes you can even see the cable poking a bit out of the earth near the beach and no one has any idea wtf it actually does. it should be dead simple for any malevolent agent to just sneak anywhere along it's crazy length and rupture it.
      as for wiretapping it... easier said than done. the fact that there is so much data passing through it also means it's that much harder to find the traffic you're looking for.

    • @RangieNZ
      @RangieNZ 4 года назад

      There is also approx 10,000V applied to the cable, to power all of the optical-repeaters in series (- the voltage changes depending on distance and how many repeaters need powering). If the cable is ever cut, the voltage on the cable, gets applied across whatever just cut it......

      It can only be optic fibre. Everything else has a tiny fraction of the capacity and is not nearly as thin and light. If you're laying cable, everything costs about the same to lay, so you lay what has the most capacity when internet traffic is growing by 50% per year.

    given how important these cables are why wouldn't they install fully armored runs the entire way regardless of depth? Is it because the weight at depth would make maintenance too difficult, or some other technical problem? I don't think it would be a cost issue right? Bc these connections are basically priceless.

    • @shalala4571
      @shalala4571 5 лет назад

      Pressure wouldnt be the problem, that's for sure. Weight is one issue, for sure, not to mention an underwater current would be able to "grip" onto the cable much better, putting several hundred tons of force on it. And, whatever they are doing right now seems to be working, i'm sure they will fix any problems that come up, and quite quickly at that.

    What isn't mentioned is that the non-fiber part of the cable is electrified, and is used to power boosters placed about every 100km in the cable. These amplify the light based fiber pulses. The boosters are quite large too, about the size of a small torpedo. Some even have things like seismographs to detect seaquakes, and pressure sensors to detect passing tsunami waves.
