_Song of Solomon_ is one of the most subtley complex, rich, and fascinating books I have ever read. I have read it three times and each time I found new things and themes and felt that the emphasis of the novel was on something different. I reread it this year and, given the events of this year, the themes that stuck out to me were those involving race relations and the inequities in the system and the way African Americans struggled to overcome them only to find another layer of barriers and injustice. Guitar seemed to be more reasonable and Milkman more desperate somehow. The genius of the book is that it is about those things and so, so much more and Morrison wove it all together. It is a masterpiece and a book that I think can be reread dozens of times with each reading providing new revelations.

Bookish it’s a book I already know that I want to reread. The language really is weaving a world and, more importantly, a consciousness for us to interact with. I loved it!

As soon as I saw your bookshelf in the background with Cadillac Desert and poetry, I knew that your perspective would be worthwhile and it is-I will return to it as I read. Thx!

    Thank you for this analysis!
Some things you pointed out really helped to further understand the last 20 or so pages.
Amazing book. Maybe my favorite of Toni Morrison.

Great book review. I've only read The Bluest Eye, which was a set text for students on my teacher training course way back in the 90s when I was training as primary school teacher in London.

Inspiring Words Thank you! The Bluest Eye always astonished me as such a fully formed work from a debut novelist. Interesting that it was a set text.
Hope your week is ending well.

@@ramblingraconteur1616 actually, before starting the course (PGCE Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in the UK, the university gave us new students a list of books they recommended to read, including Children's Minds by Margaret Donaldson. So they were not be exactly set texts but more to prime us and our thinking minds before we embarked on teacher training.... Unfortunately I burnt out within a few years... Despite luving all the kids and teaching that precious age age. Wish I'd gone into Psychology in my 20s, however 🌞 have a great weekend with your family

Out of curiosity, what is your favorite Toni Morrison novel?

@@ramblingraconteur1616 LOVE and Song of Solomon, with honorable mention to BELOVED and Tar Baby. Tar Baby just does something to the spirit, and I am sure I do not have to say a word to you about Beloved! I would probably say Love is #1, though, and definitely her most underrated. Tar Baby might be #2. Ok, maybe Beloved is tied with Jazz. Jazz was what miss Toni Morrison thought was her best.

@@JloveLamar I have not read Love, so I look forward to that! Tar Baby and Song of Solomon feel very close in some ways, and I have a deep affection for where each takes my mind.
I agree that Beloved is extraordinary. It’s a book everyone should read, and it can be the gateway to discovering the rest of the worlds Morrison populates. She had such a mind for language and a heart for humanity.

Song of Solomon was the first Toni Morrison novel I read. I was completely hooked. It is such a rich and beautifully written novel. I need to reread again at some point.

Stephanie J. Cohen I’m with you. Any one of the characters, themes, or the language on its own would probably have hooked me. All three made it just incredible.
I hope your week ends well!

I like how you point out that this novel depicts a range of experience, not just injustice or suffering. It's such a beautiful book.
*And nice shout out for Pale Fire and something I wouldn't have considered in relation to Song of Solomon. I haven't read it in a long time, but I have fond memories of my experience reading it, especially the poem section. (I was really into VN for a few years a long time ago. I still like him, but not to the same extent. Song of Solomon is the better novel of the two, I agree.)

an enthusiastic reader Thanks, Sonya. I had so much fun reading Song of Solomon. My wife and I have a lot of conversations about how these books can show the three dimensional aspect of life and how much she appreciates it, so I end up paying closer attention.
I hope your week ends well.
