Features Fromsoftware Should've Kept

  • When you make one style of game for well over a decade, you're bound to make mistakes -- it's often best to correct them, and such was the case with many systems that FROMSOFT and the players alike deemed to be bad -- case and point, things like Soul Memory or World Tendency; the question is, was it worth getting rid of some of these features? I feel like sometimes, certain tweaks or minor changes could do the trick, as opposed to flat-out removing them. There's also the argument to be made that some features are ''lore accurate'' to the games they belong to, hence why they shouldn't make a return -- and truth be told, that's completely understandable, but still, I wish we had some of these today, even in a game as polished and great as Elden Ring.
    TLDR; gimme ascetic & boss rush.

    The ability to parry with almost every weapon is one of Dark Souls 2's best attributes. It's something that I deeply wish carried forward into the following games. It promoted caution and respect in every fight and deepened the rewards for game knowledge and skillful play. I also wish the weapon and movement animations carried into Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. They looked beautiful.

      True -- I only got a Greatsword parry off once and I still remember that moment! It's a fun little mechanic I too think should've stayed.
      As for the animations, I think my favourite is the idle 2 handed grip (for swords). I think its the only game that has that unique stance and its so ''gorgeous'', if that makes sense

    Elden Ring just need covenants in general

    • @burns0100
      @burns0100 Месяц назад +14

      They need to implement a Covenant system like Dark Souls 2 had. PvE and PvP focused Covenants, with rewards and levels and ways to rank them up offline and online. It gives the game life beyond it's peak and also gives players roles in the game to play along with. I mean Dark Souls 2 rat bros was literally a thing people enjoyed doing and the rivalry between Blue and Red was bigger then ever in Dark Souls 2. It really made the game feel alive. Even had two different arena systems that offered different experiences and one of the better invasion systems too. I honestly think people forget how good Dark Souls 2 implemented some things compared to how they are handled now.
      Elden Ring feels like a stripped back experience when you remove the open world aspect of the game. It just lacks a lot of the details and systems 2 offered.

    You can actually see exactly how travel changed throughout the games and why
    In demon souls you had the hub and the level start and then a checkpoint after each boss
    in DS1 they removed the hub so they had more bonfires and allowed you to level up at them which removed the need for the maiden in black.
    Later in the game warping is unlocked because the world has become too big to backtrack without wasting time.
    in bloodborne they returned to the hub feature and added back the maiden/doll for leveling. But they kept the extra lamps.
    at the same time DS2 went full in on the warp feature and it stuck for the rest of the games.

    • @fermyonds
      @fermyonds  Месяц назад +3

      True -- I'm willing to bet that Demon Souls' world being so disconnected from one archstone to the other was probably a technical limitation (or maybe FS just wasn't experienced with this at the time, I can't say for sure) but I'm really glad that traversal itself has evolved so much.
      My favourite area design prolly belongs to DS2 -- I like warping from the get-go, and also love how there's a few branching paths you can take early on -- just adds to the replayability, for me at least

    Oh yeah, my point on covenants, they're cool but I think they could do with being different to just "the invasion ones", "invade this area ones" "the co-op ones", "the help against invaders ones", things like that. Maybe to do with schools of magic, where using certain spells to kill enemies gets you progress? Don't terribly mind the area ones, actually, but they are held back by if anyone is in the area or not. So, I think another thing that could be useful is that, with a setting you can change whether to opt in or out, if you're offline, or online trying to invade for a certain time without an invasion, you get to invade a bot, and there's random as well as the scripted invasions they currently have. Or make covenants more like guids, with big community interaction. It's a linear game and not an mmo but i think it could work out. I mostly just want an actual Radahn festival raid boss event with 40 players i guess. Or a bunch of clan war events between people siding with specific demigods, like though the Shattering ended, the tensions are still high.

  • @lewis1423
    @lewis1423 Месяц назад +3

    i feel my biggest complaint about tail cutting is that you cannot reface bosses, if you dident know or killed one by accident then that weapon is locked away unless you restarted the run or go to new game plus, but i think bonfire ascetics would be a answer for this issue :p. also on a side note i would like parrying to be a "better" and more common skill, i feel to often its situational at best, and often over powered, even in blood born the beasts cannot be parried most of the time :o.

    • @fermyonds
      @fermyonds  Месяц назад

      Oh you bring up a good point. It recently happened to me with the Moonlight GS in DS1 where I killed Seath before cutting the tail and it was annoying that I couldn't get it anymore for that playthrough -- so yeah, that's absolutely unpleasant and as you said, could be fixed with ascetics (if only we had em..)
      As for parrying, I almost never do it UNLESS its a specific boss (Champion Gundyr, Crucible Knights, etc) -- I kinda like that its "designed" for certain encounters but yeah, against someone like Malenia, it was near useless for me (and I had to rely exclusively on being lightweight and proper dodging/running for waterfowl)

    Red phantoms are hands down the most underrated feature in the souls series, especially how it was implemented in ds2. I was so disappointed that only scaling was effected in ER Journey 2 and DS3. It's just such a rich and enjoyable feature of those games.
    With the tail cut, im not sure if the achievement has much to do with its controversy since you have to play through the game multiple times to get all boss weapons anyway, so you get multiple chances at tail cuts.
    One feature that wasnt mentioned that I absolutely love are the vagrants in DS1. Those little guys are so unnecessary yet so god damn cool to see, it's one of those features that shows how much love was put into DS1.

    In DS 1-2-3 and ER you can use any weapon both onehanded and twohanded. In onehanded R1 and R2 control the right hand and L1 and L2 the left.
    In BB R1 R2 and L1 control your trick weapon even when onehanding it and you can't choose of you want to onehand or twohand each weapon: some are only 1 handed (saw weapons, cane, tonitrus...) And the rest only go from onehanded to twohanded when they change form.

    Had chalice dungeons been less of a pain to get players into, and was focused more on being a co-op environment, they couldve pulled it off in DS3.
    The randomness was cool but it also didn't make it particularly any fun. If they were specific areas tailored for the experience they wouldve been more fun.

      Spot on - I like chalice dungeons as a way to get stronger / get a specific item and I also enjoy how relaxing they can be, but damn they are a wasted opportunity. If they had more to them than just ''pull x lever / go kill boss'' it would've been great

    1. World Tendency was honestly such a weird thing and I'm kinda glad they dropped it.
    2. I think that they kinda evolved "tail cutting" in bloodborne with the addition of "limb break" of some bosses(I remember breaking Cleric Beast's and Amelia's arms). Currently I think they just don't know how to properly implement it in a really meaningful way(ER has like one instance of "tail cutting" - you can cut off giant octopus' front tentacles).
    3. I think Bonfire Ascetics wouldn't work well in open world parts of the game. They'd only be reasonable to use in the legacy dungeons. Although Michael Zaki probably thought that getting to NG+ just to get the second item from boss' soul is lame and made the whole Walking Mausoleums thing. So Bonfire Ascetics aren't really needed.
    4. I miss trick weapons so much(Church Pick and Rakuyo, my beloveds).
    5. I wouldn't mind covenants but ffs no covenant locked weapons/spell/talismans. It was so ass to farm Silver Knights in Anor Londo.
    6. Them not adding the ability to refight at least remeberance bosses is beyond me. And they could probably makes some stuff like gauntlet e.g Tree Sentinel - Margit - Godrick

    • @fermyonds
      @fermyonds  Месяц назад

      1 - Completely understandable, I just have a weird fixation on it and in some ways I do like it, but I understand why they aren't doing WT anymore
      2 - I forgot about the Land Octopus limbs getting cut, thanks for the reminder on that! And yeah, you bring up a very good point for it with Bloodborne in specific. I remember the first time I beat Ludwig I had no idea how I kept getting him stunlocked -- it was because I was hitting certain limbs, just didn't realize at the time. That was a genuinely great thing and I loved that
      3. True, Mausoleums indeed fixed a good chunk of what Ascetics have been used for -- and admittedly the whole shtick of fighting bosses again can be traced to the Sekiro boss-rematch as well, so in that sense it's understandable why there's no Ascetics -- but we still need that refight mode! x) hopefully with SOTE
      4. Man I hated getting the Rakuyo but once I got it, I felt so happy. It was absolutely worth it to struggle with those sharks
      5. 100%, I like what DS2 did where you could get almost all the covenant locked stuff in NG+2 (with some exceptions, I think the Heirs of the Sun had to be farmed) but yeah, nothing locked behind a grind would be ideal. Just having them around would be great for various gameplay activities. I feel like people would do them even if there was no reward tied to them
      6. Hopefully coming soon!
      anyhow thanks for the lengthy comment, was a pleasant read :)

    There are some who dislike Covenants for the same reason as you said some didn't like the tail cutting mechanic. Trophies/Achievements.
    Funny enough Elden Ring fixed this by NOT having "collect every X" in the game, but instead only having trophies for collecting all the Legendary Armaments/Ashes/Spells/Talismans. So if they added Covenants to Elden Ring or if they return in a future game, all they have to do is NOT have achievements/trophies locked behind getting max rank in all covenants and we'll be copacetic. Sure the players that have that compulsion that they "MUST" collect every item to exist in the game will complain but that's on them, they know they sign-up for a grind whenever they set out on that goal no matter what game it is.
    As for Trick Weapons returning, the best way I can see that happening in any kind of way is if they made a game with a Bloodborne approach to Weapons (Quality > Quantity) and had every weapon be a Paired Weapon in some form or another.
    Example: Daggers, 2-handing daggers is just awful and ridiculous, they should be like Claws and Fist Weapons where "2-handing" them just pulls out a second dagger. OR they could get fancy with it and instead have "2-handing" just swap how the character grips the dagger, swapping between Standard Grip and Reverse Grip, each one obviously necessitating a different moveset and even "Trick Attacks" for when you change grip style mid attack combo.
    That's the only way I see them giving "Trick Weapons" a return and I'd be fine with that, I'm all for them updating their weapon animation library with more interesting and fun weapon movesets.

    • @fermyonds
      @fermyonds  Месяц назад

      You're right about the covenant rewards aspect. To this day I think DS2 did that the best, where you can get them in NG+2 by straight up buying them from an NPC as opposed to having to slog through any grind (with the exception of Sunlight Medals I believe) -- still, not tying any achievements to obtaining them would be even better IMO
      As for the trick weapons bit, yeah you're right too. They'd be "tricky" to implement although deep down I'm still hopeful we'll see a return to them sometime x)

    Bloodborne: Trick Weapons by far.
    Dark Souls: Humanity healing
    Dark Souls 2: Hexes and Resonant Soul tree. Best Faith spells outside of Elden Ring. Resonant in particular.
    Dark Souls 3: Lothric Straight, Dark Pyromancies and Pyromancy in general. This is the game where they got pyromancy balancing *Right* imo.

    6 player limit on invasions.
    I even made up a system that is basically for 1 summon you get one invader (thus 1 phantom equals 1 invader for 2v1, and 2 phantom equals 3v2. Tougne equal random variable from 3v3 or having 5 invaders. Should any of your summons die, a blue will replace their stead unless resumoned.)

In elden ring your only optiond to heal are the flask or using fp, whether thats a healing incantation or the warming stone, both require fp. It's useful as a last resort, I mean majority of the early games didn't have fast travelling as a thing and homeward bones being a consumable item means you could run out. So if you got glitched or stuck somewhere you'd be out of luck unless you could kill your character in some way. So they added the Dark Sign, it's basically a last resort die and return to a safe spot item but they tied it in with the lore of our character and it being a representation of the curse of the undead and why we keep coming back. So it's two pronged, a safeguard item and a lore item.
