William Cox Inside trivia fact: This Blue World segment was created for season 4 out of a variety of skate & ray footage we have collected over several years making the show. Since we had no specific "stand ups" of me talking like we usually do, we decided to try the green screen effect and shoot the standups as overlays on the video. We enjoyed it so much, we decided to make the Shark Academy series with the same technique. So in effect this segment was the one that spawned Shark Academy.

In 1964 I was five years old we lived on a boat in Kingston Harbor Jamaica but we lived in Port Royal yes the port royal in fact we lived in a marina the very small marina that was only like 200 feet from the seawall that went down into the ocean at the epicenter of the earthquake true story...
manta rays would be catapulting out of the water out in the bay and you can hear their slaps as they landed from miles away every once in a while someone will hook one just fishing off the boat dock and one time an old woman and a bunch of Jamaicans got one all the way in and when it came up it was like 8 feet around and they just cut the line and it’s slowly swam off even at five years old I still remember it.....Very beautiful and majestic...... thank you for your videos Jonathan the ICON‼️®™️

Really awesome video, this was so helpful..I'm pretty sure you highlighted the sharks nostril when you were referring to it's spiracle(s), since spiracles are posterior to the eyes.. And the spiracle isn't really like a nostril, just confusing because the rays nostrils are ventral by its mouth. Also, the sawfish uses spiracles, but so do many benthic sharks, so that's not why it's a ray

My main question is how does a sting ray stop predators from actually eating it. I know it has the stinger, but does it extend or hopes all prey attacks it from the back?

SinOfDisaster In spite of the stinger, stingrays do get eaten occasionally by large sharks. Great Hammerheads love to eat stingrays.

BlueWorldTV Thank you. Stingrays are beautiful creatures, but always wondered if that was their only defense from predators.
