- Deep Sea Skates and Rays.
While sharks have become rulers of the open ocean, the skates and rays have conquered the seabed in their place, making up the superorder Batoidea. With their distinct shape, skates and rays have become highly efficient predators of life beneath the sediment. Different species make use of different strategies. Bottom-dwelling species such as skates are often ambush predators, burying themselves in the sediment and lying motionless before snapping up passing creatures. This behaviour also protects the rays from being spotted by predators. In contrast, eagle rays and cow nose rays gather in graceful schools. To hunt, they dig invertebrates from the sediment using their prominent snouts or by beating their wings. Manta rays are truly pelagic, spending their lives in the open ocean and feeding in a very different way.

@@fuckboy4278 chill dude
The Orca suddenly stunning the Ray was a shock.
i saw it coming and thought “oh please don’t eat it” and it passed by and i was relieved and then WHAM OH MY GOD HES DEAD
@@robine9295 Orcas are a bit like that - almost as if they enjoy mentally toying with both their prey and onlookers.
I was exactly the same as you when it passed by underneath, then...WHAM!!
A predator has gotta eat - hopefully the ray didn't know too much about it.
@@ianmacfarlane1241 they also use that method to kill them and it makes since, as the stinger is above, not below.
Maybe it was this channel but I remember a video where an orca killed a baby whale and just carried it around like a trophy😭
Probably just did it for fun too :/ The power they have in their tail is cool to see though
I'm seriously excited for the day where this channel has a massive library of nature facts that can be used as a legit study material for schools. Extremely informational, easy to understand and doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot. I love every video
That opening shot is other worldly.
Okay yeah the Deepsea skate is now lowkey one of my favorite rays.
Yup, I gasped...
5:40 "Rays are also an important source of prey for larger fish"
Ray: *gets yeeted by orca*
Another banger incoming, they are always so peaceful.
Aww thanks :)
@@NaturalWorldFacts No problem, if anything I should be thanking you for making such great content.
@granny smith Aw thanks and no worries 😁
I expect top marks haha!!
@granny smith 😁 you too man
I’ve witnessed a mantra ray swim above me as I was scuba diving. I could only see the silhouette of it, and it was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
That devil ray swarm is just magnificent
Seeing the rays breaching the waves and jumping out was the first I've saw. Absolutely mesmerizing- I've got another level of respect of Skates and Rays now :0
I like to think the creator of these videos found out about chimaeras, became obsessed and went on a deep dive (pun intended) into learning about it, and that’s the entire reason they decided to make videos about the deep sea and all it’s creatures
Amazing work as always Leo!
To be completely honest, that is EXACTLY what happened, but substitute Chimaeras for Greenland Sharks! 🙊 I got obsessed, and it led me down a rabbit hole of deep-sea fascination and now here I am, making videos about it and studying marine biology at uni!!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment. 😊
I didn't know that they hunted in large packs, very interesting
Thank you for making so much on the ocean. We need more people to teach about what's in the ocean since we barely explore it anymore.
Well said!!
There's something so calming about your videos, I feel like I'm getting professional content for free. =)
I'm in love with this channel and the way you cover the ocean.
Aww yay, I’m so glad!!
Same. Due to some of the wonderful music choices, too, I found my way to a game called Abzu - and BECAUSE of this channel, I got so much out of that game!!! I was able to identify a lot of the creatures in the abyssal plain chapter, even. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in for these videos!
@@Beryllahawk Oh! Abzu is an amazing game. So beautiful. If you need a game to relax or fall asleep to, that's one of the best.
@@Emily-ck9ji I love it so much!!
Yes Yes so amazing
8:18 That fish just bumped into the rock lol.
Yes! rays and skates getting their well deserved spotlight! Batoidea are such unique and wonderful animals, amazing video as always!
rays are beautiful but sometimes i cant help but giggle when i see them. they’re so silly looking, i adore them. i love that depending on the angle you either see a majestic being or a funny lookin guy. i love them, truly, i love them
ocean animals are my favourite thing and bring me genuine joy, this is amazing, thank you so much
I went diving with manta rays in Hawaii. They're even more amazing and mesmerizing in person than in the video!
Yes they are
Batoids have some of the coolest dentition I've ever seen. Specialized durophagous conveyor belts of doom that crush any and all.
Leo! Oh my goodness I was so excited to see this pop up in my notifications 🤩 there’s nothing quite like seeing the beauty of rays and skates swimming! Beautiful music choice as well ❤️
Thank you so much Shelby, I’m so glad you enjoyed!! Hope you’re doing really well, it’s been ages 💚

I can’t get over how rays and skates move around in the water, just flapping their little wings. It’s so adorable and they all look so goofy
I'm so glad to see skates and rays get some love. They are so often overlooked.
Excellent! I love these videos. Keep up the great work.
spotted eagle rays have been my favorite animal for the past 5 or so years so this felt special, especially when that one was smooshing his face in the floor

Hats off to the editing and footage selection. Those footage are so wonderful 🍻

Watching this nearly canceled out the effect 2020-2021 had on my psyche.

Such an informative and chill video, this is so good
Leo, you have such a talent! You take subject matter that even some professionals render boring, and make us see it through your eyes! It's not just your soothing voice, it's the way you turn a phrase, and your superb script writing as well as your knowledge of the subject matter that all combine to make watching your videos such a pleasure! And I truly enjoyed this! I only wish I could give you more thumbs up!

Hi again great video
I will say that I really do enjoy your channel. Normally I'm not big into any form of biological study or anything similar. But you seem to have made it interesting and mastered your craft. Well done

Another wonders of the nature world. With them being closely related to sharks.
This is such a nice video to vibe out to
