It's been three years since I made a video about sharpening, so this is an update on the equipment and my method of getting my tools (chisels, handplane cutting irons, and knives too occasionally) nice and sharp and ready for work.
All of the equipment that I use is cheap - so this is a good guide for anyone looking to prepare, sharpen and hone their hand tools in an inexpensive way.

My grandad used to get me to sharpen his chisels when I was growing up. I can get most of them sharp enough to shave with now. It’s a skill all in its self, and one that’s overlooked these days.
Oh for pity’s sake! That simple setup jig for the honing guide....that’s going to save me an awful lot of money going into the swear jar. Thank You.
The King KDS 1000/6000 stone you seem to be using is the other way around: brownish is the 1000 grit, and the white part a 6000 grit. So, you should be going from your diamond plate (380), to brown (1000), to white (6000) and then to your strop (roughly 12000)... The white part does get mushy when soaked too long. Best practice is to soak the brown part up to the plastic divider (about 20 minutes), and the white (or the complete stone next) just a few minutes (like 5 minutes).

I’ve had my set of bared chisels for about a year and a half. Really happy with them. Didn’t need too much flattening but definitely needed work to get them properly sharp. They keep their cutting edge well. Not for “dirty” work and never strike them with my claw hammer!

This is EXACTLY the advise I’ve been looking for. As a complete woodworking beginner I’ve really struggled to get a good sharp edge on old chisels. There seems to be so much online about angles and the like. Heading to your Etsy for a leather strop now. Thank you for sharing!

No need for any fancy wet stones etc , a simple diamond plate with 400 one side and 1000 the other followed by a few rubs on a leather strop is perfectly adequate for every day woodworking tools .

One day i will buy them. Sweden has shops that go over the top on wetstones and diamondplates. Over 150£ sometimes.... Ludicrite honestly.
So far i get result with wetsandpaper 😄 (is that right word? My english lack on tools and tradestuff)

I had to sharpen my chisels the other day with a belt sander lol. It's going to take me a while to get them good again now! 😂😂
Sharpening chisels is about posture and body movement pattern. Put left foot forwards, and hold chisel jig in both hands pivot your upper body about hips, back and forth. Keep arms straight and stiff. It’s like a robotic movement pattern, strange at first, but with practice can stabilise the chisel angle precisely.

Perfect timing !!!!!I m a beginner at woodworking . I have stanley chisels (blue line) I adore them and stanley handplanes . I m not confident on sharpening so i gave them to a friend of mine to sharpen them . So i decide i have to learn to sharpen them and i order yesterday a sharpening waterstone and a honing guide . I hope i will not ruin them . I also have gauges which they are expensives i dont think i will try it soon because of the round and v shape seems so difficult .

I am cheap Charlie by nature 😂, buy watersandpapers and glue to wood or plywood and make a sliding jig with the angle I want. Put the diffrent grits in succession and leather last, it's done in no time. The plywood used for concrete last long time when edges is painted a couple of times.

Great informative video Keith, my chisels and hand planes have been neglected a little, well a lot lately, but next weekend I'm hanging 9 doors so I better Sharpen them soon. I'm definitely going to make one of the reference guides for the bevels that will speed things up a little no doubt about it.
9 doors? Woah, it usually takes me half a day to hang one!
@@RagnBoneBrown for a friends house all internal so not to bad, did a couple of fire doors last week in a 100+ year old building that used to be a slaughter house and the walls and frames where horrendous.

I'm such a slob when it comes to sharpening (I normally just shove the chisel in front of the belt sander - I can never get anything else to work!) but this video was really helpful and might have inspired me enough to give it another go! I think it a lot of it comes down to taking care of your equipment - soaking the wet stone, flattening it after ever use, stropping etc - things that I don't really have the patience for!
Cheers. I very rarely get all that equipment out, maybe every three or four months or something like that, once they're sharp you can just strop and keep working. I tend to have a few chisels that way if one goes blunt I use a different one and then I'll have a massive sharpening session for an hour or so and tidy them all up at once 👍

I actually tried sharpening a few chisels in light of this video and although I can get an edge on them, I'm struggling to get them to the point of cutting paper or shaving hair - I don't have any polishing compound to set up a strop, and was just wondering if you think that might make all the difference? Thanks :)
Great video Keith! I’m slowly building my plane collection. Found an antique wooden one about a year ago that I need to sharpen and got given a no.3 Stanley from my dad. Shame there won’t be any boot sales for a while. ☹️

I just recently bought 3 Hand Planes from Ebay... you can still get some good bargains out there... I paid £30 plus change for the Stanley No. 4 - it came with it's cardboard box, instructions and bevel guage! It's a well used tool, but still in great condition considering... I also got a Stanley 4 1/2 for £51 - no box and gubbings but a used tool that had been looked after, these aren't so numerous, hence the higher price... and lastly a Record 5 1/2 for £42 - again, managed to get my hands on a well used but also well looked after example... the trouble these days is that you're up against Collectors for these items... I intend to use mine, so was less concernedf about the wear and tear on the item... although none of them broke the bank...
My housemate has a pair of Stanley No.5's in case you're wondering about the gap... and they ARE in need of some heavy restoration... the idea was that I would sharpen 1 of each size of blade as a Scrub Plane and the other in the pair as a Finishing Plane... and just swap and change the blade & Chip breaker between the different bodies depending on what was needed... One of the blades (No 4 1/2 ?) has been sharpened on the skew, so that will take a bit of getting back to square, but the rest just appear to need a touch up to get to ideal sharpness...
Talking of which, that's the reason I watched this vid... I am going to need to get a Sharpening kit together and have been watching a shed ton of videos from Scary Sharp to the likes of Rob Cosman and all points in between... you give advice very similar to Paul Sellers... which is a bonus in my books... :o) So I'll be following your advice (and Paul's), with one exception... the little Sharpening Jig... I used to do a lot of woodworking when I was in my early 20's, working on Microlight flying surfaces for a fixed wing style aircraft that used Spruce and Aluminium tubing for the wings and tail section, similar in construction to the balsa wood kits you can get.... and used a No. 4 plane and chisels to work the structure... I used one of those little jigs and found I wobbled while using it, I didn't find the wheel wide enough to support the job during the process and could easily tilt the blade... I am looking at a Narex version that has a wider brass roller to give me the stability for the wider Plane blades, they're about a Tenner more expensive than the one you showed... JetsetUK £30 for 3 planes, not bad at all! Looks like there are bargains out there if you look in the right places. I recently restored a no.2 that my dad gave me after buying a couple of wet stones. The video’s on my profile if you want to give it a watch? (It’s my first restoration, so I probably made loads of mistakes).
@@o.g.bwoodwork Oh Cool! Yeah £30 for 3 planes is indeed a bargain... I stopped my bids when they reached either a Buy Now! price or the average for that type, whichever came first... I was pleased with the prices I paid to be honest... Yep, will take a look, it's another subject I have scoured YT for to see what needs to be done, though again, Paul Sellers seems to have the better advice on it, than say one of the Upmarket guys or those across the pond... I think they pay less for their equipment than we do, to be fair... when you look up recommended items like Sharpening Stones, we in the UK seem to pay half as much again as they do over there... I said I'd used a No. 4 when I was in my 20's - and have recently bought one... it still grieves me that mine went missing on one of my numerous moves in the (30+) years in between... but such is life! :o)
JetsetUK I do love Paul Sellers videos. I would say he’s definitely made ‘woodworking guru’ status in the uk. That’s a shame your no.4 went missing during moves. That’s the next plane I need to get to be honest. I have a large wooden one and a no3 to restore as well.

Haha I saw the same video ! I couldn't quite believe that he was so dismissive of the Bailey style planes, it's like he had no comprehension that some people don't have hundreds of pounds/dollars to spend on a plane

Clamp your draw knife with F clamps to a piece of wood held up in a vise at height where you can stone it. That's the best way I've found for sharpening them. Trying it any other way is too awkward and impossible to maintain an angle.
This is something i need to learn as most of my chisels are blunt.
Some good tips I use an additive to the water that I got from Workshop Heaven as it gives a bit more lubricant to the water and it makes the diamond stone easier to clean
Hi Keith, great advice again! How long do you go on the 6000 grit? Oddly my chisels start to dull when I go from the 1k to 6k, having got a really good shine on at 1k.
I’m looking forward to seeing how you will handle sharpening the curved and irregular shaped chisels. I might go for no sharpening and carbide tips. And only sharpen what I can on the diamon plate and grindstone etc. What do you think? Are the tips expensive in the long run?
Hi Goran, video for my grinding set up is already available via Patreon, not sure if you've seen it? I did some more turning yesterday and have decided I much prefer using "proper" chisels over the carbide ones, I found them much more natural / intuitive to use. I'll put out another video about turning in the next week or two once it is edited 👍

Thanks for the video Keith. It answers a lot of my nagging questions about the procedures of sharpening. One last one though.... Can anyone help explain why you wouldn't want to use tje "barbaric" method on nicer chisels? What are uou losing by going that way? Thanks in advance to any answers!
Cheers. The barbaric method is not as sharp, and it's inaccurate, i.e. the chisel edge is not perfectly square, and the angle is unknown so not optimum for edge retention etc. But there's no denying that it works!

I bought stuff from Amazon on your recommendations, enjoy the few pennies on me. Why is the protrusion of plane irons different to chisels to achieve the same angle?
Ah I figured it out. As the planes sit higher in the honing guide. I guess those measurements are only good for the honing guide you use.
When you submerge your whetstone do you submerge both sides or just the 1000 grit side because i heard some people say that the finer side doesn't need submerging and that it can crack if you do so.
I plunge the whole thing in, I read somewhere that it's not good to keep them in water for a long time though as they can start to perish so what you say could be true but I've not had any issues. Soaking definitely helps as if you just spray water on it tends absorb in to the stone quite quickly

If you want to upgrade get a faithful diamond stone which has a 400 and 1000 side and is there really a need for polishing compound
The polishing compound is so you don't have to use the 400 and 1000 to often, it keeps the edge sharp by maintenance and then you only need the diamond stone if you damage the edge, buy a new chisel or leave to long between honing.

Hi Keith, have a look at "Rob Cosman's" sharpening technique without a guide. You will see his sharpening station is quite low. He also shows the David Charlesworth "ruler trick" for plane irons.

You hollow grind on a bench grinder. You need an adjustable tool rest to get a consistent grind. The crap rests on most bench grinders are worthless.
The main reason your struggling with sharpening by hand is because your only pulling back, then main cutting on a story he is done on the push stroke, give it a go mate you’ll find it much more efficient and you’ll be able to maintain your angle easier

As for tools, I don't feel like spending the price of new tools, with sharpening I do feel like it's worth to invest in them, why? Because it allows you to tune up the cheaper tools :)
An easier way for free hand sharpening is to make figures of 8 or circles, it’s much easier to hold a consistent angle
