    Glad I found this tonight, I have been clearing out my late dad's shed today and found a few old Stanley tools including a Bailey plane. This video will be so helpful, as is the link to find the age of the plane. I've got a few vintage woodworking tools that I've picked up over the years, just getting round to sorting and restoring them. Enjoy your videos greatly. Stay safe and well, Brian

    Restoring an old plane is a great way to get a superb tool for not much money. I paid about the same for my mid to late 50's Record No4. It's at least 60 years old and works as well now as it did when new.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 лет назад +1

      I agree, they're excellent tools and seem capable of lasting a lifetime - can't say that for a lot of today's products

    Nice video, and good job! I would like to make one point, specifically on flattening the sole. The sole was not flattened properly because of the way you attached your sandpaper with clips, which raised the front and back edges of the MDF. That is why the front and back of your plane were scratched, but not the middle. The MDF had flexed, very likely resulting in a rounded sole.

    You are very liberal with the oil 😋. If that plane start tu rust anytime soon I’d be very surprised.
    From the sound you can actually tell that the blade is properly sharp. Very good job Sir! Ten thumbs up!

    Hi really like your video's. have just started to get back into my woodwork after my daughter asked me to make some items for her wedding reception, Now I'm going to re build workshop and get more serious. I have seen a lot of your projects and have like them all. and these tips will be helpful as I inherited a lot of old tools from my Dad. and like you I would rather reuse than buy new. Thanks

    Brilliantly explained and takes some of the mystique out of restoring older planes. I am waiting for Faithfull to relist their wooden plane totes when an old Stanley no.4 with a plastic handle and a new Record no.5 with a similar handle can be restored to look like a real plane. Great video and a big thumbs up.

It had a no. 3, 4, 41/2, 5, 51/2, 6 and 7 as well a shoulder plane and plough plane plus a couple of old hand saws. This little lot will keep me busy for a while. If you find a couple pieces of thin wood (shims) and cut them so they're roughly 15-18mm wide by 125-150mm long by 2-2.5mm thick. Get some 220 grit and lightly apply some spray adhesive so that the sandpaper adheres to the stick evenly without random high spots/bubbles. That way you can easily/evenly sand the frog seat and both sides of the throat. Great video. 😀

    You could always turn your other plane into a scrub plane. Put a heavy camber on the iron and use it for heavy stock removal to knock off a wobble on a board before sending it through a planer

    Hello, just discovered and subscribed. I like to restore old hand tools and one thing I Luke to do is use low voltage electrolysis to remove rust. Basically an old phone charger and salt water. It's readily found on Google. A lot of detectorists use this.
    Then you can see where just some polishing or where you need to get aggressive.
    Good job on that tool!

    good video . ive just done a bailey 4, bailey 3 , record 4. all oicked up from a bootsale fir an average of 3 pounds each. bees wax on the handle after oil works great. if you scrape the old laqure with the blunt side of a flat screwdriver it comes off easily with no scoring.
