One of the things I always appreciate is the inclusion of mistakes. Few projects, especially original projects, happen without them. I'm also a big fan of your repurposing and frugal nature. The bed looks amazing.

I hope you don't mind a suggestion. You might need some ventilation holes in the ply, otherwise mould can grow in the trapped condensation. A hole saw applied at regular intervals, would do the job. Beautiful project, and lovely to see reclaimed wood being used.

This turned out great. If the middle support ever did start to split, you could add a metal collar/belt just before the notch.

You have an uncanny knack of casually showing a genius idea. Centre rail of your bed, many times I've put a screw in to repair a split step cut in the end of a Timber, have I ever thought to put a screw in before it splits? NOPE!!!! I've 40 years of experience making and repairing stuff and this is not the first time watching your channel I've thought - Why the hell didn't I think of that?

7:31 That made me wince. I had kickback from a very similar cut to that. Still have a slight scar.
Nice bed. I made my own too - pine - and it weighs a lot. I ended up reinforcing the corners with massive corner braces and coach bolts because the bed hardware loosened as metal plates can give. Solid.
Nice finishing work. You did something really good there.

Hi Keith, I like the style of this simple bed, but I would recommend giving the mattress the opportunity to breathe, the air needs to circulate under the mattress, that's one of the reasons beds have slatted bases/frames. Otherwise the wooden panels will start to mold relatively quickly. Greetings Ben

    • @RagnBoneBrown

Love the idea of returning material from the house in a new form. I’ve made mantles, bench seats and vanity tops from old floorboards and wall cladding in our 1870s timber framed house. It feels great to know that the material is having a new life and makes the extra work worth it. Your final product looks amazing.

  • @denniskomeshak9082
    @denniskomeshak9082 2 года назад

That turned out great! You might want to add a vertical post (leg) to the center of the center rail for just a little more support. Our bed has it and other than hitting it when we vacuum, it really is no bother.

Really nice build! Looks absolutely stunning!
One small thing that's not the end of the world but you do need to keep an eye on.
As far as I understand the bottom of the bed/matrass is now closed off?
It's actually better to keep holes in there for ventilation of the bottom side of the matrass.
Otherwise you run the risk getting a slightly damp bottom of the matrass as well as some mold eventually.
Turning the matrass enough can prevent this, but personally I would just make some holes in the bottom.

I may be wrong but I think you should add some holes in that plywood for ventilation as mold could start developing at the bottom of the mattress due blocked to air flow.
Also, it is good practice to flip the mattress periodically (if it's designed that way).

Just an FYI on the center support, I ran a furniture/mattress store for many years and the number one reason for mattress warranty claims was sagging in the middle. Your center rail looks strong but you might want to check and see if the mattress warranty has a clause about requiring a center support leg. Keep up the great work!
