  • 1 lb of fresh okra
    Salt & Pepper to taste
1/3 Cup of Hall's Fine Cornmeal
    4 tbsp of Vegetable Oil
Wash okra and pat dry. Cut okra into bite size pieces and place in a large bowl.
Add salt, pepper and cornmeal to okra. Stir everything together, covering the okra in the cornmeal and seasoning. Add more cornmeal if desired.
Heat cast iron skillet and vegetable oil to medium high heat. Add the okra to the skillet. Allow the okra to sear for a minute or two before stirring.
Cook okra on medium heat stirring often for about 8 to 10 minutes or until brown and tender. Enjoy

This 77 yr old Texas grandma grew up eating this yummy dish. I’d fight off anybody who tried to take all the well done pieces. My grandma (😂called her mama) made all the glorious southern dishes and her cast “arn” skillet was her prize kitchen tool.

This is literally the only TRUE southern fried okra I have ever seen on RUclips. This is the kind of fried okra you gonna get here in Mississippi!! Only difference is we cook way more than 1 pound at a time..

As a Sri Lankan the only way I’ve really had okra is in curry or salad (it’s super good, we take it and some bitter melon, fry till crispy then mix with fresh red onions and green chilli) but let me tell you when my mouth started watering😭 that looks so good and all I’m craving right now is some proper southern fried chicken, honey glazed carrots, okra and cornbread😋 ugh😫 sounds so good right about now

Living in the Uk, looking for a ladyfinger ( okra, they dont use the name "okra" over here so much)recipe ...and being a native Eufaulian from Alabama, Iinstantly recognized the accent. This is exactly what I was looking for in an okra recipe. Thanks so much for reminding me of my old home far away.......

I love love okra! A highly underrated vegetable. I used to help pick in grandads garden when little. It’s a must in vegetable soup as well. Great video! 👍👍

Your comment hit home. I used to pick okra in both my maternal and paternal great grandparents' gardens when I was a wee sprout. My maternal great grandmother let me pick and shell green beans (under her carport on hot days!) as well. My dad's grandfather taught me how to place fish pieces in the ground for growing corn; his stalks were among the tallest I've ever seen.

I hated fried okra as a kid and would put a little lemon juice on it. This is how my family fried it. Thank goodness I grew up and now its my FAVORITE FOOD😂
I still love a little fresh lemon juice on it😂 I’m glad to see a lot of other people who fry it this way😘

That’s exactly how my Mom use to fry okra back on the farm in the hills of SW Virginia (Appalachian area). It’s the best tasting okra ever. You are right .. she would test the Okra by slightly cutting into it with her knife … if it didn’t cut, she threw it in slop jar for the hogs.

It took me a long time to like okra. It was often slimy, or, if my Southern mother fried it, it was so overcookrd that it was like trying to eat pebbles, but once I had it properly cooked, I loved it, Great recipe!

My grandma made fried okra in the skillet. Deep fried is ok, but it’s not as good as skillet fried! I always like the little black pieces! They were really crunchy!

I love skillet fried okra, and yours looks great! I know it's not healthy, but I use bacon drippings instead of vegetable oil when making it. 😋 Also, I use flour too. I will try your much healthier version soon!

this is how you do fried Okra. You don't deep fry it. You have a very thin layer of oil and turn the okra You go to restaurants and it's "deep fried" which is fine but nothing compares to Okra that has been turned in a cast iron. Fried okra should be work vs just sticking it in a deep fryer. Too many people around the country "deep fry" stuff vs "frying" it. Squash, okra, chicken, green tomatoes, catfish should never be deep fried but fried one side at a time in a thin layer of oil. Deep fried is for lazy people.

Could I trouble you to tell me what brand/size your electric cooking eye is? I’m having a hard time finding one that can handle that size of cast-iron pan. (I like to fry things on my back porch so I don’t mess up my kitchen with the grease).
    Thank you!!
