    Great presentation John, loving your laid back style. I agree with most of what you say but isn’t it terrific that we have so much customisation that each of us can set up the R5/6 to suit our own particular nuances. Keep them coming, thanks.

    At last, a balanced review of the R5 with the main attention being photography rather than video. I think you have summed-up the intention of this camera perfectly, continuing the aim of all Canon 5 series cameras I suspect: photography first and foremost but with the option for video if and when needed. I enjoyed this video immensely and thank you for your realistic approach based on real world use. I have the 5D4 and absolutely love it but you your comments have really helped put things into perspective on whether or not I will move to the R5 in future. I suspect I now will at some point.

    Great review John, coming from a 5DS i'm loving ithe R5 even though the sensor is slightly less. Images are better for sure. Your video spec 'piece' with settings was a real help getting up and running with this camera. Real world work will tell but i'm happy to see Canon stepping up finally. The eye detect is amazing for sure. Take care.

      Thank you so much! That is great to hear. I am sure this camera will be a big upgrade for you even through you're losing 5mp. I always assumed the 5DS was just a big 5D3, and the 5D4 was a good upgrade when it came to the flexibility of the file, so you might be finding the R5 RAW to be a yoga master!

      Thank you so much! I still mess up the framing but its nothing like before! Also through a series of comments, I have realized that I thought my modeling lights needed to be brighter for the 5DIV AF system, but now that I have the R5 I know it was just the camera. However, I am still trying to fine tune the screen / EVF brightness - its a process finding the point wher eyou can trust the camera indoors and see outdoors too.

Yes it’s so true that one camera can not be all thing in 2 Genre, what to prioritize Video, deal with a Video centric machine, deal with photography get a photographer’s camera. You show how to do it right and foolish that most users want a C200 and wouldn’t want to pay for it but think they can own a “hybrid “ and get that performance free.

    Very informative video, I like how you cover mainly the photography aspects more than the video. Your workaround with Capture One using the EOS utility is good. At first, I was annoyed about not writing to the card when tethered. You soon get over that after you use it more. Plus reviewing the image on a screen is better than on the back of the camera in my opinion. Keep the videos coming.

      Thank you very much! I hear you. For exposure I like the tehter but I like the playback in the EVF and LCD for fixing poses or framing in real time. I was worried about only having one copy of my images too.

    10:37 - I completely agree with you about the need for an *internal zooming* 70-200mm lens. I will continue using my EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lens until Canon makes a better (better for me) 70-200mm lens with *internal zooming*. I don't care about how small it is compared to the EF version, I care about how rugged it will be when I'm out shooting. The other thing I don't like about the new RF 70-200mm lens is that you need to turn the zoom ring further in order to get it from 70mm to 200mm. I like the shorter throw on the EF version and don't want to lose that.
    I'm loving the EOS R5 for stills and I do a little video on the side as well and it's great for my needs.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад +2

      Amen! I heard about the throw from someone else too. You often need to zoom from one extreme to the other when shooting sports so I can imagine for many this lens will be a set-back.

    • @JaredRibic
      @JaredRibic 4 года назад +2

      @@JohnGress - When I shoot weddings or fashion runway I need to get from one extreme to the other quickly and would rather do that with a single twist of the zoom ring than have to twist it twice.

    Great review John. I'm really glad you brought up the issues you've had with camera-matched profiles in Lightroom. This is something I've struggled with on my EOS R as well. They do have pretty good matching profiles now, but the Adobe's rendering of the R raw files wasn't very good when it first came out... then they changed them, breaking previous edits. 😡
    Despite the improvements Adobe has made, I still prefer the way Capture One interprets my raw files... unfortunately I really miss some of the Lightroom > Photoshop workflow when I use it. The bottom line is I think Adobe needs to work on their Canon profiles.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад +1

    Great review by a pro! I really appreciate that as it becomes more usable and more insightful. You can use Capture One´s crop function to get it exactly as you want when tethering. Just do it on one photo then automatically you'll have on the rest till you change it. Smooth and easy. You can save crops as presets. I do it often for getting the right proportion to compose for web images; sometimes its panoramic proportion something crazy like 600x2000 pixels... It's also possible to import a text as an overlay so one can really check for exact composition. Its such an ease of mind seeing it right there on the shoot its going to work out design wise.

    Very good and balanced review. Thanks a lot for all those useful information. To add something, to my sense, full electronic shutter is mainly practical in a church for weddings, when you have to portrait people that don't move to much without making any shutter sound.. I won't use it for sports at all or anything moving unless I have to not care about its side effects.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Pierre! That is a good reason to use the E shutter. People pointed out to me in these comments that the electronic shutter also decreases your not depth to 12-bit which was in the specs and not in the manual. www.canon-europe.com/cameras/eos-r5/specifications/

    • @pierrelagarde7758
      @pierrelagarde7758 4 года назад +1

      @@JohnGress Indeed. Though I think 12 bits encoding is a no brainer in those conditions. Depending on lightings, flickering, low light environment, I think management of exposure and high ISOs are probably the most critical abilities for the camera.

I use it for all my better Sony A7Riii files, but still stay with LRC as I can’t get around missing the DAM library convenience of LRC and the history panel. Very nice review. You might want to use EFCS as your default, though, to avoid shutter vibrations that can impact images using midrange shutter speeds, and try to remember to switch to full mechanical when using fast shutter speeds and wide apertures. Some cameras can auto switch between the two to ensure the best mode is being used, that would be a nice feature to have. Interesting that the Colour Fidelity profiles do not seem to be the final answer for you - I’m still hopeful that they (or a slightly tweaked form of them) will do the job.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад

      If this camera did auto switch, like you're describing, that would be a very good feature. I think the Colorfidelity profiles are good, but I am sure they will improve. I am excited to try the x-rite checker, which just arrived.

    11:17 yeah I've always had issues when it comes to cropping for IG but not anymore because I use C.Fn4/Add cropping information/4:5. It probably won't work for you though since you can still see outside of the crop. Although the lines are so much thicker than the thin grid lines and they are dark gray/blue(?) so it is hard to miss. Interesting that your images import cropped in LR. I guess that is a feature of using the Cropping/aspect ratio instead of doing it my way. Great overview of how the camera is working for "you".

    Great Video John (again a great video) .. Something about profiles:.. remember the first ones we checked out? they where done with the color checker.. maybe there is nothing wrong using color checker to color balance a shooting situation. I do have serious doubts about creating a profile that way. Not only should a profile get me a color base, based on the specific sensor, but also for well exposed, under or over exposed (slightly of course) files/areas in a picture.. i produce often 'underexposed' studio shots, because i fear nothing more then parts of the skin overexposed (and gone forever). I do hope a decent profile is a multidimensional 'thing' that does work on nonperfect exposure. the ones of color fidelity look so far best to me. Capture one: I always felt it has 'automatic' fantastic color rendering. And i am also considering it (again) (especially after adobe ignoring what their customers need. - not what they want, what they NEED). Not sure to have one more vendor dependence . .because C1does not replace LR/PS (or maybe it does?). I get slowly the impression that 5% of my time i am updating software, firmware, and software again .. (even on the new RF lenses (this morning)). There is hardly a day where not at least one product wants or offers an update . and all has to stay compatible amongst each other and sitting on an OS's.

    Excellent video! I use the R5 for Wildlife, primarily birds. And this with an adapted Canon 600mm 4.0 III. This combo really rocks. I did not expect the EF performing well on the R5 but holy crap, I was wrong. The Animal Eye Autofocus performs better than on the Sony A9 II, I know it because we use A9 II with a Sony 600mm 4.0 GM. The tracking function is also top, I would say not far behind the A9 II. But what really sucks is the Rolling Shutter with 20fps, I don’t like it and I rarely use it. The sensor of the R5 is at least one generation behind the A9 II. Where the R5 shines is the memory interface, writing back data is so much faster compared to the A9 II. So is the R5 a High MP version of the A9 II? No, not at all. You are right. But it comes for me very close in some aspects.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад

      Thanks! Interesting. I'm not an expert about electronic shutters but I wonder if its possible not to make a huge sensor scan fast enough to avoid rolling shutter.
      Just FYI people told me in the comments of this video about this info being buried on a Canon spec sheet. It is not in the manual: "RAW: RAW, C-RAW 14 bit (14-bit with Mechanical shutter and Electronic 1st Curtain, 13-bit A/D conversion with H+ mode, 12-bit A/D conversion with Electronic shutter, Canon original RAW 3rd edition)" - www.canon-europe.com/cameras/eos-r5/specifications/

    I have used capture one and Lightroom both.
    I have shifted from capture one to Lightroom, as Lightroom has lens correction which is not present in capture one now, they use to have in 2002.
    2nd and most important point is Lightroom has better shadow details than capture one - I have done side by side comparison test, of course you will have to pixel peep, its not for people who don't look deep in an image detail....

    With regard to the flying saucer football at 1/4000 and yet others report bird photography is fine, YOU don't track the football as it arrives at the receiver's fingertips whereas the bird photographer follows the bird. They also most likely can't tell if the bird is slightly distorted since it is a non-geometric subject. Rolling shutter distortion will appear the greatest on moving objects in the frame, not very much on objects in motion that remain at the same location in the frame.
    If you track the subject in the frame, as the electronic shutter assembles the frame, it will use newer pixels in subsequent sensor lines. If the subject stays motionless in the frame, its doubtful you will notice the pixels were newer ones if they represent the same area of the moving subject.
    Rolling shutter can only be fixed if all pixels are sampled for the exact same moment of time.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  3 года назад

      Yes, this is why you need a global electronic shutter or a mechanical shutter for fast moving elements.

    The solution to your sports problem is to use 1st curtain electronic. It is the best of both worlds. The reason that one does not have rolling shutter problem is that the camera is already open when you are taking the shot and the mechanical shutter is the second curtain closing it. I have never heard of issues on fast lenses using that mode. I guess I better research that as that is the mode I shoot in all the time

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  4 года назад

      As I corrected on screen the manual says "Defocused image areas may be incomplete when shooting near maximum aperture at high shutter speeds, depending on shooting conditions." So practically speaking you cant use the first curtain electronic shutter for sports since you would be using a fast shutter speed and a wide open or close to it aperture. .

      @@JohnGress The zeitgeist on RUclips channels related to photography are videocentric due to the video nature of RUclips, however, this introduces a bias in many cases to their reviews as they are NOT typical users of equipment in many cases, so they harp more when something does not do what they want for their purposes the way they want. Reality and thankfulness for good tools does not seem to enter into it. I have been watching these kinds of channels for years and while they often purport to be about photography they get lost in their own frustrations to stretch the same tool for things for which it is not truly designed. This leads to lauding every "improvement" they perceive in the video realm as wonderful beyond measure. But to me nobody talks about disk space, monitor upgrades, prints and real matters very often. Because it is all about 4K now 8K blah blah. Well even over the air TV here routinely broadcasts far from ideal HD quality and often less, and most people are looking on a smartphone, what really matters there? John, Thanks for this review and since it was two years ago, I checked LightRoom Classic and see they have added the camera matching profiles to it. My question is what "Picture Style" do you have the R5 set to? It's in the Red Menu #3. Someone suggested to use "Faithful" and I've been trying it outdoors and it seems fine, but not sure what is best with studio lights. I have never set a Picture Style on my camera before and that seemed fine too. What do you suggest to set this to on the R5? Thank you.

    • @JohnGress
      @JohnGress  2 года назад +1

      I have it set to standard. But the picture style only effects jpegs and how the raw file is interpreted and displayed on the back of the camera. The profile “camera matching standard” in lightroom and “film standard” in capture one is how the file in interpreted in the computer.

      I have heard form others, before I bought the lenses, that when they got Sigma lenses they needed to be calibrated with a Sigma USB Dock. But when I received mine back in December they worked fine out of the box on the 5DIV and then the R5.

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 4 года назад

      The mirrorless R cameras focus directly on the sensor so there is no calibration of lenses required. That’s why old EF lenses and third party lenses that may have caused trouble on DSLRs work great on the new R cameras. But keep in mind that third party lenses usually mimic EF lenses by using their internal ID numbers. So your camera will basically recognize and behave as if the mounted lense is some (usually old EF) lense. This may limit some features like focus area which Witze camera may adapt/limit as it thinks it’s dealing with a specific lense that has this limits.

    Regarding colour profiles, they are, effectively a type of preset. And theres sharpening applied as well. Adobe for some stupid reason dont make it easy for you to see the actual, unaltered raw file. And even worse, they show the file with the adjustments, tone curve set as zero which they definitely are not! I prefer swap out to an older process version, zero all the sliders and tone curve then re open . Its a method I learned off Andy Astbury, he refers to it as a process version swap. Without doing this ,lightroom will mislead you as to the true nature of your file. It will even show clipping in the highlights that isnt actually there. Its a great file management solution but has a crap raw converter.

      Batch processing in C1 is fine. I am going to assume you're asking me if C1 has brushes, which is does and its very similar to LR, but there are not any presets, you have to create them. What you can do in the two programs is very similar. So far I have found some of the hot keys in C1 to be more logical, but I think the fine tuning of Chromatic Aberration is better in LR. LR radial filter seems to be more gradual and I am finding I need to layer two in C1 to get the same outcome. But the C1 color is better than the Adobe color. I don't have an opinion yet about accuracy between colorfidelity or C1.
