    That deck will probably outlast that house! The new owners could screen it in and have a really nice outdoor space. I’m anxious to see the tie-in of the roof from house to deck. My deck was attached to the house as it was built before the new ordinance took effect.

    I love seeing the flashing/water shedding details and the explanation. Also the wood preservative for the cut ends. I have made mistakes on these things before, so I appreciate the learning. I wanted to ask if in your area you have to slope your decks away from the house any, like 1/4 inch to 1 ft? Where I live we get pretty torrential rain sometimes. Although I guess with that 3" flashing you have no worries.? Thanks so much for showing the details. It really helps. I am looking forward to seeing the deck roof work. We have a covered porch and covered deck we need to do for our home, so it's really relevant for us. Thanks again.

    • @BCRenovationMagazine
      @BCRenovationMagazine  2 года назад

      Hi, Russ. I didn't slope this deck. It has the deck planks which are not tight and the deck will be covered. If it were an open deck or had a solid surface like Duradek vinyl then I would slope it. That 3" flashing really works to protect the building. By the time the water would get high enough to go over the top of that flashing it will be going over the edge of the deck. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙂

Notice they are like a 1/4 from the edge? 2. The 2x8? Sitting on the 4x4 is it just siting there or it's nailed down? 3. My deck not going to be that long but I notice you didn't put any 4x4 on the sides for support...is that just over kill? Thank you for your answers in advance

      Hi, Scott. Thanks! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Yes, there will be a video on building the deck stairs where I will explain in detail how to calculate rise and run, layout and build them.
      This video will be up soon. I just finished the paver landing today that the new stairs are going to rest on.
      I'm going to install the exterior doors next. Then I'll do the steps.
      Stay tuned! 🙂 And thanks for watching!

    Great work explaining as always Ken. I love binge watching your videos. Just to be clear, the ledger board of the deck isn’t connected to the home? I see screws but are they just holding the two beam boards together?

    • @BCRenovationMagazine
      @BCRenovationMagazine  Год назад +3

      Kevin, the ledger board is screwed to the home. This is done to help prevent the deck from pulling away from the mobile home.
      Although the ledger is screwed to the mobile home is screwed do deal with lateral forces only, that would pull the deck away.
      Load bearing (downward forces) are supported by the posts and concrete footers underneath.

    Helpful video. I'm learning how to build a deck. Wouldn't the flashing go over the boards at the house? Otherwise wouldn't those boards will be sitting in water that's caught by the flashing?

    • @kejada
      @kejada Год назад +2

      Flashing should go anywhere where water may build up and rest. It’s primary function is to give the water a face to run along and ideally shed the water off instead of it pooling onto the wood which will eventually rot it away; that’s another reason why flashing at the ledger board is imperative it’s the main connection to the house - you don’t want that rotting.
      It’s not very good to put flashing over the actual decking boards. It’s always wise to go overkill with flashing but water doesn’t build up and pool on decking boards typically and decking can always be easily replaced, your ledger board cannot.

    • @BenBen-jl2ft
      @BenBen-jl2ft Год назад

      @@kejada but wouldn't you attach flashing to the ledger board and have the bottom of the flashing go *over* the deck board? In the video, he has flashing attached to ledger board but then the bottom goes under the first deck board

    • @kejada
      @kejada Год назад +3

      @@BenBen-jl2ft I see what you’re saying. He has it going underneath the decking board because if he put it over the decking board he would be unprotecting the ledger.
      He could theoretically run another piece of flashing on top of the decking board as well as underneath but then he would have aesthetic issues.
      Pause at 23:42
      It would make nailing the flashing underneath the door virtually impossible unless he removes the door beforehand.
      The way he’s done his flashing in this is perfectly acceptable and will last a long time.
      The only difference between me and him is I put mine on as soon as the ledger is up and I add another ‘lip’ to the flashing and make it into what’s called a Z bar so the flashing runs down the face of the ledger maybe half an inch.
      Hope this helps. Flashing takes a lot of visualization (and theory) as you can see.

    • @BenBen-jl2ft
      @BenBen-jl2ft Год назад +1

      @@kejada super helpful. Would you then have a deck board sit on top of the z bar or most in front so the board doesn't impede the movement of water down the z flashing

    Is the Ledger board screwed to the house ?

    • @BCRenovationMagazine
      @BCRenovationMagazine  27 дней назад +1

      Hi pacmanplayer. It is lag bolted to the main structure, but it is not load bearing on the main structure. It is lagged only to prevent the deck from pulling away from the main structure.
      The deck itself is supported by posts and concrete footer blocks. Code in my area requires that decks be self supporting, stand alone structures.

      @@BCRenovationMagazine you double checked your local code right? im absolutely positive you know more about this than I do, but im doing a deck right now too, and noticed in my local area, if the deck is connected to the house, and over 250 sqft, a building permit is required, while if its not connected to the home, it can go as big as 1000sq ft before needing a building permit. Either way you got a beautiful deck going on man! im building a 24x12 but mine is only about 3 ft off the ground.

    • @BCRenovationMagazine

      @@GardenisLife Hi, Gardenislife. Absolutely, always check the requirements in your jurisdiction. Requirements vary widely and what is acceptable in one area may not be in another a short distance away.
      In our area, there are four different jurisdictions and different requirements all within about an hours drive of each other.
      Generally speaking, around here a permit needs to be pulled if the deck is more than 24" off of the ground or if it has any kind of structure built over it.
      Repairs and maintenance are exempt.
      Most of our work is done on first nations lands, which is a unique jurisdiction.
