  • The Chimei Museum in Taiwan is home to the world's largest collection of rare stringed instruments. I visited the museum recently and had the privilege of trying out several of their violins. With the limited time I had that day I only spent a few minutes with each violin, so these are all single take recordings. The audio you hear is what my iPhone captured, with no post-production editing.
    0:51 1713 Stradivari
    1:36 1722 "Elman" Stradivari
    2:24 1707 "Dushkin" Stradivari
    3:10 1656 Nicola Amati
    4:00 1732 Guarneri del Gesu
    5:00 ???? Guarneri del Gesu
5:43 Returning to the 1722 "Elman" Strad for a bit of solo Bach
[Edit: Jan 13, 2023] A viewer noted that the last violin I sampled might be the 1744 "Ole Bull" Guarneri del Gesu. After comparing the photos I have of it with public photos, I think that viewer is correct.

Why insult the player.,,im sure he did his best and really enjoyed playing these violins.
I also enjoyed listening to so many famous violins in the one recording.

I agree. Every violin feels different to play under the bow and the fingers and takes a while to get used to. And if they aren't played/tuned much, they often go out of tune quite suddenly when you first play them. Anyone who has tried out a load of instruments in a shop will appreciate this. Plus he only has a few minutes with each. It is unreasonable to expect a perfect studio recording performance under these conditions.

@@FiddlerNick I also found his comment about preferring his own contemporary Anne Cole violin very interesting. Many great violins built these days (including my own 😄) which in my opinion are completely under rated by most in favour of antiques.
Many blind sound tests have been done in the last 10-15 years where quite often modern violins were chosen as the favourites. Equally, some soloists say some original Stradivari are difficult to play. There was a TED talk by a soloist professional violinist who said he had to change his playing style to be able to play the Strad he was loaned. The golden period of violin making is here again…many great makers.

@@finemasterviolins Yes the Amatis and Strads and Guarneris of the world were making fine top end pro instruments which were pricey even in their own day. The "silly money" values now are all to do with rarity and antique value. I am sure there are equivalent instruments being made now that are in the same league technically, as expressive and playable tools to musicians good enough to get the most out of them.

After testing these rare old violin, would you say the highest quality modern violin are better or worse in terms of projection and tone?

    • @genehuangviolin

Really hard to say based on only spending a few minutes with each of these violins. The room where I tested them did have nice acoustics, but I found the playability (ability to produce a good tone and even response) of these instruments to be lower than my modern violin. This could also be that I have had the time to get used to my violin. Thanks for the question!
