Wow..that drive was fantastic. The Douro valley is spectacular and some architectural beauties waiting to be restored. Still, that early foggy sunrise in Minho is unbeatable and Alabaster fits right in❤
I am 71 yrs old and this is the 1st time I've seen mecanical harvesting of olives. Very interesting and Portugal seems to be a beautiful country. Thankyou... I'm from SA.
Boa noite Sr Joaquim.
What a great adventure today! The old towns are so interesting and to see how you harvest olives mechanically topped the video off! So much to comment on in this video...just want to thank you for sharing this!
Ahhh, azeitonas so close to Valdigem my favourite wee Douro village (2018). Amazing country! Obrigado for the deep dive into this aspect of Portuguese agricultura. Mais, por favor
The meaningful lesson I've learnt so far is that actions speak louder than words. You can see that you live that way. Great to see you involved with the harvest. ❤️
(watches the first 50 seconds) aaawwww poor Buddy/Alabaster - please give him a homemade treat! 🐻❄ (se faz favor, he says) (watches all the rest) FABULOUS video, thank you for sharing those experiences with us! 🙏
One of the things I like almost as much as the actual taste of olives is the history. It must be one of the oldest crops of humanity, wine, olives and grains. Thousands of years of finding the best ways of getting the best taste. It was a way of life for many generations in a few countries, absolutely amazing. You might notice I'm a little biased, Sicilian heritage.🤭😁❤️
Peaceful time spent with other nice people. Very good photography. I took a few screen shot to make computer desktop pictures from. I use them for a week or so before moving onto something else of interest to study for natures beauty. 👍👍👍
I grew up next to a Catholic Church. They rang their bells all of the time ( daily), you could tell what time it was. I did not attend that church because I'm Presbyterian. I always enjoy your videos, thank you. Watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸🦅 !
Love and miss those foggy mornings from the North, gorgeous views of the Douro that I never seen before! wow that tractor with the shaker is awesome I bet my grandfather would of loved that! C'mon mr craftsman you have to make some proper steps for Alabaster!
The old trees are so beautiful, they look the part. When I think of olives I also think of dates, figs, pomegranate, all the early staples that you found in most gardens. 👍
Absolutely loved the video Joaquim! My family is from Fatima but I know when we move to Portugal from Canada in the near future, the north is where we will settle.
A little explaining would be a big help for those of us on UTube! What happen to the tent? The drainage ditch? How will the chicken box3s work? Woodworking skills are great but a little explanation helps me and I would assume others to engage with your project. The duck pond?your nostalgia is well documented and I’m pleased for you and I appreciate your desire and skills to duplicate…but please share in conversation as you did with grape harvest. Very interesting. Thank you 0:39
The more I watch videos on the harvesting of Olives, the grading of olives and the producing of olive oil, the more appreciation I have for it. I love olives and also olive oil, so this is good to know. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the olives. The drive along was absolutely stunning., from the scenery and the villages.
I am happy to see that your channel is growing. That was a beautiful drive along the Duro River (maybe it was another river), three hundred KM is a trip. I am assuming you did not use the toll highways... The olive harvest was epic, your friend has a cool set up with all the equipment. How many litres did you earn helping? Will you show us how the other olives were processed for your personal use?
Wonderful Video! Thank you for sharing this. Alabaster has such a personality. I smell meat.. where is the meat? Dog looks at you.. Poor Dad, he needs a step up now ROFL
Olive oil in the uk has become horrendously expensive over the past few years. A bottle of cheap Aldi olive oil that was £1.20 is now £7.20. I used to use it all the time, now it is a luxury.
A few bad harvests in Italy seemed to send the price up to unfortunately stay there. It’s my opinion that a lot of that price increase is from the retailers
You are getting real good at editing! That was interesting! Glad to see the laying boxes are coming along! Soon your own eggs! I'm trying to catch up on your older vlogs! Always look forward to Sunday morning here in Ontario! Well done
The old Roman road The caminho de Santiago (St. James way) goes through the village here. There’s a few stretches that date back a few centuries to Roman times
What’s left after extracting the oil is the flesh with the water plus the seed particles. The (água russa) red water is indeed very bitter. All of this goes to a composting tank and eventually back to the olive grove.
@Joaquim_Conde thank you for this explanation. I love a good olive oil, but last year the price for a good oil exploded...so i hope this year's harvest is much better.
I know we get crappy olive oil here in the states. It’s mixed with canola oil and comes in from many countries in the same bottle! What can you tell me about what brand(s) to buy here that is decent? Thanks for the awesome pictorial! Lived the old olive trees, the olive oil making process, the grapevines all in a row! Fascinating!
What’s available to you may be primarily of Italian origin, as they are the biggest exporters. If you find some of Greek origin it may be a good option. From my own tasting experience, I believe that Greek Olive oils are less likely to be blended.
Best to find some locally. It’s my opinion that Greek olive oils are less likely to be blended with seed oils. This purely from my tasting experience. Also they seem to like early harvested oils.
Will you have to register your ducks & chickens as part of the EU policy ? In Britain it is causing a bit of a backlash from smallholdings and people who are keeping just a couple of hens for their eggs .
He always leaves some food, mainly kibble in his bowl so he can have a snack in the morning, he also likes to lick the grill and look for any bits of fish that may have fallen in the fire.
Wow..that drive was fantastic. The Douro valley is spectacular and some architectural beauties waiting to be restored. Still, that early foggy sunrise in Minho is unbeatable and Alabaster fits right in❤

Welcome!
How lovely to see the process of olive harvesting, start to finish. Poor Alabaster looked pretty bored though 😄

Bons palavras senhor, muito respeito. John
Wonderful job. I salute you. The feeling of achievement you have must be immense. If only your grand parents could see this.
They help me every day. Thanks

Que maravilha, um bem haja!
Love the country side, interesting the Harvesting of the olives.

enjoying watching you develop your family's property and your dog.
I just moved to a little village out side of Ponte De Lima. You're not kidding, this is a beautiful, lovely, kind country.
Exquiste scenery!
The meaningful lesson I've learnt so far is that actions speak louder than words. You can see that you live that way. Great to see you involved with the harvest. ❤️
Yes! Thank you!
I enjoyed the olive harvest, and the trip along the Douro. Nice Ferrari.
Glad you enjoyed it
GOOD harvest of olives oil and fraiche olives
Beautiful countryside. I am amazed at how your dog can sleep anywhere.

Thank you for a great show reminds me of when my family picked walnuts in Northern California USA. I am 82 & really enjoy your podcast.
Our pleasure!

Thank you for that beautiful tour through that beautiful landscape, and for the sharing of your knowledge.
Our pleasure!
The old trees are so beautiful, they look the part. When I think of olives I also think of dates, figs, pomegranate, all the early staples that you found in most gardens. 👍
That was fascinating to watch. I’m so jealous.🇨🇦
It's not hard to imagine seeing how big seafaring was for the Portuguese. 👍
Really beautiful, I enjoyed looking at the countryside. Those olives looked delicious.
Thank you for showing us a very beautiful piece of Portugal. I enjoyed the ride and the harvesting of the olives.
Many thanks
Absolutely loved the video Joaquim! My family is from Fatima but I know when we move to Portugal from Canada in the near future, the north is where we will settle.
Your country is so beautiful. Fun video watching the harvesting of olives. ❤
Lindo esse lugar!!!
Thanks Joaquim for your vid 😇💗💗💗 love and bless you guys, good work with the olives you know a lot about them 😉

Beautiful video.
Thank you! Cheers!
England's ship building period is very much the same reason we have hardly any woodland
Hardwood lands… unfortunately plenty of fir
Just start replanting the trees 😜
@@arjanvogel6444, Replanting oak! Like it’s new concept. I don’t understand why they didn’t.
Wonderful Video! Thank you for sharing this. Alabaster has such a personality. I smell meat.. where is the meat? Dog looks at you.. Poor Dad, he needs a step up now ROFL
You’re welcome. Yes he loves the grill the day after, meat or fish just the same
👍

Great video for us this morning. Thank you!
What is happening with the tent?
Thanks, I’ll be back to work on it now that the harvest season is over

Thank you. Cheers
I jumped forward. Can you tell me about the little old cobble paved road from a few episodes back?? Ty. Enjoyable!
The old Roman road
The caminho de Santiago (St. James way) goes through the village here. There’s a few stretches that date back a few centuries to Roman times
What happens with the bitter ingredients of the fresh olives if you press them to oil? Because olive oil is not bitter.
I wouldn't travel those roads in the tourist season, way too many beautiful distraction to have an accident.
What use of pine cones?
I know we get crappy olive oil here in the states.

That is liquid gold
What was Alabaster after licking in the ashes of your fire pit? Some minerals? Dropped food bits?
Interesting!
F you see this, where do you buy pure olive oil in the US, or can it be shipped from Portugal, and arrive intact?
Best to find some locally. It’s my opinion that Greek olive oils are less likely to be blended with seed oils. This purely from my tasting experience. Also they seem to like early harvested oils.
In some Portuguese communities in the US you can get Portuguese olive oil. It's usually more expensive than Italian but it's 100% olive oil.
Olá Joaquim seria interessante um vídeo com a opinião da sua mulher em relação a Portugal e à vida no nosso país. Um gosto ver os seus vídeos obrigado
Ola, sim, vou tentar convence-la a falar.
29:55 pinhas fechadas?!!
Will you have to register your ducks & chickens as part of the EU policy ? In Britain it is causing a bit of a backlash from smallholdings and people who are keeping just a couple of hens for their eggs .
That's horrible! Iam so sorry for this!
I hope not, but time will tell. Perhaps the village will have some outlaw 🦆 🐔 🦃
Fresh olive oil is the best no way I’d buy it from a supermarket ever again because the quality is so low there
Actually it was the Spanish who cut down all the Iberian Oak.
Are you living in your tent now?
Muito terreno a ser mal usado ou abandonado.
O teu cao percebe mais da vida a dormir do que tu acordado.
É sem dúvida um animal sábio
Too bad they didnt replant the oak trees. I suppose they still could.
Multi lingual dog, he ignores you in several languages.
Este cachorro so no sono
Já encontrou atividade, vai ver esta semana
Eh pa ta na hora de começar a falar portugues para o cão :-)
Já vai entendendo algo
What was Alabaster after licking in the ashes of your fire pit? Some minerals? Dropped food bits?
Interesting!
He always leaves some food, mainly kibble in his bowl so he can have a snack in the morning, he also likes to lick the grill and look for any bits of fish that may have fallen in the fire.
