Tracy Thomas I’ve always made up my own combos but for a polished look I noticed online at Macy’s they sell some Fashion and fine jewelry pieces That are in the same Product line and I was reading in the comments that a lot of the ladies like to collect these pieces (must be nice!!) to mix/match within this product line. I can see that makes it really easy that it’s sold for specifically to layer! So that’s an idea. You can also just throw together whatever you want & if you rock it confidently you can pull it off. Similar to what Erin said With an anchor piece & mixing patterns applies with the jewelry as well. I try not to overdo it so if I’m layering Bracelets I’ll keep the necklace simple. It’s also fun to mix high-end and low-end like when I want to look like a rocker chick with some money in her pocket I will wear a studded studded leather wrist cuff (it’s more feminine than it sounds) with a Tiffany’s signature bracelet. The best thing about breaking rules are the Endless possibilities!!
I wore an outfit using your rules and was asked if a stylist did my outfit. I said sort of. I wore white jeans, over the knee suede brown boots, animal print blouse and plaid blazer.
Thank you so much, Erin. I am 53 and grew up with a certain set of fashion rules that ya just didn't break. So nice to see examples of ways to mix patterns and colors that look chic and break.the rules. Makes ya feel like a fashion rebel. Lol
Me too. I received so many compliments when I wore white pants, white top, & a white blazer. My booties were light taupe, however, because I really cannot get myself to like white shoes/boots.
I love winter white! Maybe I need to get an anchor piece because I've always been such a stickler about NOT wearing silver with gold. I wouldn't even wear a purse with different metal hardware if it didn't match my jewelry. I'm acting as if it's past tense. LOL! I need to break this habit. Thank you Erin!
Great examples especially of the mixed metals! Could you do a video on layering bracelets and necklaces? Would love to see your styling tips on these! 😍
Hi Erin love all your rule breaking tips! I especially love #5 wearing unusual colour combos. I love to wear black with navy (very Parisienne) also love the black with brown. I think it's about mixing the right brown for your skin tone with the black. Awesome video. Have a wonderful day xo Jackie
Great video Erin, would love to see a video on what to wear for leg wear. I love tights and I do wear stockings because of the veins in my legs. Would love to know your thoughts.
Lisa Dunahoe That’s what i was going to ask. I’d like to know about denim on denim. I’ve seen it so often lately and I like it but my teenage daughter says no way. 🤷🏻♀️
I always do black jeans with any wash of denim shirt but I don’t think I could do a jacket and jeans. I feel like that whole “Texas Tuxedo” thing or the Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake matching all denim outfit thing haunts me too much. 😬🤷🏼♀️
Love being given permission to break the rules! With your encouragement, I recently wore a primarily white outfit in the Northeast winter, and got nothing but compliments. It actually lifts your mood. I gave you all the well-deserved credit!
Yay! Glad to hear breaking these rules is confirmed b/c I Love mixing different shades of white & also beiges & creams, year round. It Began with a home decorating mistake and now I’m just running with it. My fav. Belt is a brown leather gold studded belt from Italy & Ive been wearing it nearly daily, with everything, including my favorite black jeans! Keeping the black pumps for the navy dress vs Trying to find another color…What sweet relief! ....& this was the first summer I didn’t change out my black leather handbag for a lighter toned bag. That has been liberating!!! LOL
Great "RULE"! BREAK the rules. Especially those unwritten ones!👍 Your video reminds me of an old toungue in cheek book: "The Southern Belle or Why Princess Margaret will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma" (1991). She had been photographed wearing ... White Shoes After Labor Day! Oh the horror! 😖😏🤪 Thanks Erin❣💞💞❤
Yay, mixed metals! I've been doing this for a while now, but every time I do it I kind of hesitate and cringe a little because I'm just not positive I should be doing it. I love the way it looks so I've just gone ahead and done it anyway, but hearing you say it, has given me more confidence. Thank you so much! I love your Channel💜
Great information. I grew up with those rules but I break most of them now. I love black and brown together but it always reminds me of an old line: "Ever feel like the world is a black tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes?" 😄
Recently ordered white Jaime jeans based on your sizing and recommendation. They work! In the past I’ve ordered mad river rag and bone that fit as well. You are appreciated
Your hair-do is terrific. You look very youthful today, like you are turning back time. Thank you for this educational video...from Grandma Bunny in Phoenix.
Thank you so much for these tips. We are heading into autumn then winter here in Australia so these tips will be great for me. 🔆My secret cheat tip for mixing colours is to take inspiration from some of my fave scarfes. The colour mixes in them I replicate in my outfit. Never fails. !.😉🇦🇺✔😎
Thankyou Erin for sorting some myths, I like to mix brown with black and patterns in the same family, but I can not wear shoes or boots not matching, I have to have my shoes sandals trainers and boots all with a matching handbag,.Its a pain changing all the time but it’s a must lol❤️😘💐🍀👗🛍👚👜🇺🇸
My favorite way to marry colors in an outfit is w scarves! And yes to black and brown, been doing it for a long time and like you said, it always looks amazing and sophisticated!☺️👍🏻 Great tips!
An old fashion rule regarding colours was encapsulated in the following quote “ blue and green should never be seen”. We broke that rule in the 1960s and even went as far as to combine polka dots and stripes. So “MOD” 😂
Awesome reminders for us rule breakers!! PS You came to my house today....in my mailbox...in an Ulta catalog! Even though I knew you did the shoot it was still neat to see you in print. See ya later!
Hi Erin !!! I love white and love wearing it all year !!! Love these rules we can brake !!!! Love mixing all these and having a unique look !!! Hugs and love 💕 xo
Great video. My main takeaway from this is, if it’s OK to wear white now, mixed metals, etc., then it’s always alright, not just when the fashion police says it’s OK. This gives me the courage to ignore what’s “on trend.” Someday mixed metals and all the rest in this video will again be a no-no, but if it’s OK now, it’s going to be OK for me anytime. I will no longer be a slave to fashion elites.
You know how at certain light situations it is hard to tell black from navy? As long as it doesn't look like you tried to match something and grabbed the wrong color in poor light, it's good. Like that black outfit plus caramel brown, that's so nice IMO. :-)
The King's Daughter I had a friend pull the wrong colour in low light. One navy and one black shoe! When we both realized part through the day, we laughed so hard.
You are gorgeous in every style you come up with. And I adore, I mean ADORE both black and white outfits!!!! Would love to find that black circle skirt.
Excelent Erin! I am very french in my stile (well, although my blood isn't french, my culture is... compicated.:-)) i've just heard a french blogger saying we don't mix black with brown... yes, we don't mix them no matter how, but we do mix them because sometimes they look great together. I had this black and brown with horizontal stripes top when i was a student. I would wear it with black trousers&shoes and a brown jacket. I am blonde with brown eyes and i just felt so pretty in that... but so aware i was breaking a stong rule. Felt like.... a little fashion "criminal":-)))
Trying to picture it... I can well imagine you looked great! :-) I have an unusual pair of slacks in vertical black and brown stripes; of mixed material and unusual design. I don't wear it a lot ( dry-clean only), but I love it with a black linen top and black lace-up shoes.:-)
Today I dared to wear my thin stripe joggers differently. I wore them with a black sequin embellished tee, gray blazer, and black suede pumps. I was complimented by a stranger. I never would have put that outfit together before watching your videos.
Every time I wear all white to the office I hear “wow, your brave” Not sure if everyone thinks I’ll immediately spill coffee on myself, I’m throwing the white after labor day out the window OR I’ll get lost in a snow storm but I love it (goes well with my silver locks)
Such a good informative video I totally get you and I’m like yep yep all the way with you girl your bomb Also I think any size can wear print small print for petites and large print for taller also larger ladies can wear print coz what the print does is shows the eye the pattern instead of focusing on the persons size just thought I should throw it out there embracing all women
Dear Erin, bottomline is: wear it with conference! Nice to see the mixes. What do you say about different shades of green... That's a hard one for me. Take care xo
Can you wear an off shoulder sun dress that is also a short skirt (i.e. low neck with a shorter skirt)? What is the rule for hem line above the knee for over the age 50 for an off shoulder sun dress?
Great video but I still think No White After Labor Day for me... to each his own but I’m old school and think it looks wrong.... you look awesome in white!
Yes, I am totally with you on the no bright white after Labor Day. I will however, wear off white, cream, or taupe in the fall and winter. To each his/ her own. I have seen folks wearing white in the dead of winter and I must admit that it throws me each time.
What about wearing jeans and jeans jackets together. Can we wear chambray and denim together. Need some guidelines about how to pair denim and chambray. Thanks!
I love to wear black with either brown or blue/navy and never worry about having non-matching bags and shoes. But I do struggle with mixing metals, and have recently made an effort to try it more. I haven't yet managed 'double denim' or leather top and bottom: too far for me!
I’d love to see a video on layering jewelry and stacking bracelets. I love the look but can never figure out how to do it.
Could you do a little tutorial on how you did your hair like that please? So cute and a bit different!
I wore an outfit using your rules and was asked if a stylist did my outfit. I said sort of. I wore white jeans, over the knee suede brown boots, animal print blouse and plaid blazer.
So awesome! Thank you for sharing! xo

Thank you!! xo
I love all white ! Especially different textures together 😍
Me too. I received so many compliments when I wore white pants, white top, & a white blazer. My booties were light taupe, however, because I really cannot get myself to like white shoes/boots.
I LOVE that you said you don't have to match your shoes, belt and purse!!!!!

That's a great idea! xo
Pink and red! I was raised by a fashion mom who always said not to wear them together...
Did your mom also avoid the combination of blue and green?
In the early 70s fall fashion was maroon with pink - stunning. My Mom on pink and green was a no no. I hear you. Erin is so helpful isn’t she?
Hi Erin love all your rule breaking tips! I especially love #5 wearing unusual colour combos. I love to wear black with navy (very Parisienne) also love the black with brown. I think it's about mixing the right brown for your skin tone with the black. Awesome video. Have a wonderful day xo Jackie
Great video Erin, would love to see a video on what to wear for leg wear. I love tights and I do wear stockings because of the veins in my legs. Would love to know your thoughts.
I love white in the winter. Especially with an off white sweater. Thanks for the tips they are great as usual!
Whew! So glad to hear it all from you! Erin how about blue jeans and a blue jean jacket?
Lisa Dunahoe can I piggy back your question? What about the color of jean? Like dark jacket, light blue jean...? Thank you! ❤️💄
Lisa Dunahoe That’s what i was going to ask. I’d like to know about denim on denim. I’ve seen it so often lately and I like it but my teenage daughter says no way. 🤷🏻♀️

I love that black & brown outfit. My 2 preferred are black & red,I also like brown & beige colors
Love being given permission to break the rules! With your encouragement, I recently wore a primarily white outfit in the Northeast winter, and got nothing but compliments. It actually lifts your mood. I gave you all the well-deserved credit!
Wonderful! So glad to hear that! xo
The info. on mixing it up with the belt and the boots and jacket was helpful! that was a rule I had not thought to break. Thanks Erin!
Hi Erin! Absolutely admire your personality and style! Your videos are always a treat! Thank you!
Thank you so much!! xo

I really like that you used your own photos for examples. great advice!
I get confused by what is and isn’t business casual...but it might just be me. 😉 I tend to overdress. Thank you for these tips!
Stay tuned, working on a video soon about the various attire types ;) xo

Great video Erin!
Amen to these!! Creativity is dressing is freedom.
Mixing black and brown is a favorite; I had never heard of an anchor piece, thanks for that suggestion.
Yes!! Thank you! xo
Yay, mixed metals! I've been doing this for a while now, but every time I do it I kind of hesitate and cringe a little because I'm just not positive I should be doing it. I really love your ideas for fashion I am turning 65 April 8th and now I know what are fit I'm going to wear thank you very much
Erin, can you please do a spring capsule wardrobe video using affordable clothing ( like the Old Navy spring capsule you did two years ago)
Recently ordered white Jaime jeans based on your sizing and recommendation. They work! In the past I’ve ordered mad river rag and bone that fit as well. You are appreciated
I have always enjoyed wearing brown pants and light blue or baby blue top!...not sure if it’s appropriate but these two colors make me feel good :)
Your hair-do is terrific. You look very youthful today, like you are turning back time. Thank you for this educational video...from Grandma Bunny in Phoenix.
Aww thanks!! xo
Looking good Erin in the Ulta mag!!!!!!!

I do the black and blue now. I was raised to never do that. I still can't do the brown and black ( but I can see myself doing that) .

Great video!
Today I dared to wear my thin stripe joggers differently. I wore them with a black sequin embellished tee, gray blazer, and black suede pumps. I was complimented by a stranger. I never would have put that outfit together before watching your videos.

How about denim jeans and jacket together- it used to be called the farmer’s suit😁 Is there a way to make that work? Thanks for all you do 🙂
Yes! You can do that... just make sure both pieces are modern and wear something chic and feminine under your denim jacket
Busbee Style thank you! 🙂

So happy to hear!! xo
LOL. it looks like I’ve been breaking lots of rules without even knowing it!!
This is such a helpful video. Thank you!
Ok, there is a trend now of bypassing hosiery like nylons.
For an extra polished look I think they should be highly considered.
Love blue and black👌😀
Very fantastic

Black & Blue will never “bruise” your wardrobe❗️😉
