The paper test is to find knicks in the edge. Once done it needs another couple of passes on the fine stone again to restore sharpness as paper dulls the edge very quickly. Also, save the battery and use an old leather belt if you are that set on the finish. That knife could've been sharpened in a third of the time.
Yeah my old man who is 78 now you should tell me how we used to get disciplined with a leather sharpening strap when he was young, pretty much the same thing as a leather belt just a little bit wider.

Instead of sharpening across the SHORT length of the stone, have you ever sharpened across the LONG length of the stone? Seems the knife may have better ability to keep same angle if you use long side of stone. 🤷♂️
This is how I was taught and have done for 50+ years. The secret is to never let a knife get dull, then you never need the coarse stone. Another tip is don't use a glass cutting board, or the dishwasher. Finally after sharpening, either run the knife across a leather strap or a fine ceramic rod. This will remove the micro-fine curl at the edge of the blade the is always created by a stone. Tips learned from old timers when I was just a pup.
Pressure distribution and displacement. More knife on the stone at once means less pressure per mm. Its a less specific and uneven distribution of pressure long ways, i guess is a better way of saying it lol.

As lots of other people mentioned, this was not the easiest way to sharpen a knife. I liked the edge you put on your knife. You did a great job, I'm not sure about the use of toothpaste. I've been dealing with knives for many years, and I've never seen or heard of using toothpaste, but if it helps, then keep doing it.

Then put some toothpaste in your palm and do the same as you did with the soap. This will sharpen those blades but I wouldn't expect doing this will sharpen a knife though.
The tubing cut to clip on the back is brilliant I'm going to use that from now on because it's not easy to consistently get the angle the same on each stroke over the stone I guess there are some guys who are capable of doing that, but just about everyone rolls the edge by changing the angle between the blade and stone. Consistency with that angle makes the difference between mediocrity and superiority !
@@dk-bw4gk You definitely don't need 3 sharpening stones, but most of the ideas in the video are still valid, and could save quite a bit of headache (though I don't see how it'd save you money, unless you were throwing away your knives or some shit when they get dull). Unless your trying to repair a heavily damaged edge or completely change the angle, you can skip over lower grit stones. 800 grit is basically the lowest grit an average joe will need, and that's for your super dull knives. You could pick up a Naniwa 1000/3000 combination stone for about $50, and it'll work for basically everything you could ever want. As for the pipe, that's just to make it easy to hold your angle; you'd have to do a bit of work to figure out which size pipe you'd need for your knife-because the size you'd need for any given knife will change depending on the dimensions of your knife and what angle you want to have-but it'd still be better than buying one of those "one size fits all" clip-on angle guides (spoilers, the one size fits basically nothing). Of course, you could freehand sharpen without any kind of guide, or use a guide ramp to set your initial angle (before you move the knife away from it), but that's obviously going to be harder. The only part I'd disagree with in this video is the battery "trick" at the end; not only is it dangerous to tamper with batteries, but-assuming they're using it to remove the burr formed by sharpening-it's just flat-out more effective to use a strop with some abrasive compound. Hell, with a strop you'd even still be able to use your pipe guide, meaning it's not only more effective, but easier to perform since you don't have to freehand a _fucking battery against your knife_. A cheap leather strop (with compound) shouldn't be more than 15-20 bucks, but you could even save that money if you have an old leather belt laying around (it has to be real leather though). You could even make your own strop out of an old pair of denim jeans; all you'd have to do is cut out a square, attach it tightly to a block of wood, and put your abrasive compound on it. The compounds themselves are usually dirt cheap, and you can pick some up for about 3 bucks.
Bc pressure distribution. More specific pressure is applied when passing across this way. not enough even pressure would be distributed if passing the entirety of the blade at once, creating an uneven edge.

Aluminum foil or sandpaper. Fold aluminum a few times and cut from base to top. Sandpaper, similar to the stones, you can go from course to smooth by snipping.
The battery honing isn’t a good idea. You have just used the pipe, which IS a good idea, to establish a precise edge, and now you are ruining it with imprecise honing with a metal battery. Use a leather honing block - perhaps with the pipe on the knife, if it doesn’t slide off.
I use the diamond grinder disk on my stained glass grinder. And use carbon steel blades...they last much longer than stainless steel! I started sharpening linoleum knives on a grinder almost 50 years ago, when we needed ultra sharp blades to make rapid cuts in a material that wasn't linoleum.
Good hack. But depending on the width of the blade you'll need 1/2", 5/8", or 3/4" hose to get the angle right. Bet y'all thought you'd never use what you learned in geometry 101. Tip: If you don't happen to have the right diameter hose or tubing, your neighbors probably have some just laying around their lawn or hanging off a hose bib.
Too many stones just 300 grit stone will do for the stainless knife. Heres a good idea: sharpen the knife in single stroke then with the other side after that smooth it in a soft wood slab maybe pine of something smooth. To retain its sharpness for a long time soak the knife in BOILing H2O for a minute or two let it cool then let it stay in the freezer over night 4 to 8 hrs max. That's it. . . I am from the PHILIPPINES.
I get the guide but my general purpose knives get a 600(medium) grit diamond stone & leather with polishing compound on the rough side & they cut just as well or better in meat without the complicated stone process. I've been doing it for 45 years so I think I'm past the need for an angle guide for most sharpening unless I decide to reprofile the angle.
@carltondean3675 I do like what ceramic does for an edge especially the grade coffee cups are made of but the diamond stones I carry in my backpack or hunting pack are less likely to break if I set the pack down wrong. So I use the ceramic at home & will go to the diamond if I'm down to only one.
1. learn how to use the whole sharpening stone you're going to cup it in the middle and your angle is going to change 2 if you're going to sharpen a knife learn how to sharpen a knife
The use of rubber hose for guilding angel is a good hack, but better wrap it so not to leave rubber residual on the stone. Since this is a Japanese kitchen knife, the edge angle should be 17-18 degree
Hi, As a Japanese person, I am happy that they use Japanese-made whetstones. However, the way knives are sharpened is different from the Japanese style.
Florida now, NY originally, I generally use diamond stones I used to use Norton tri oil stones and water stones, I found diamonds less bulky and less to carry..
Nice results, but people need to understand that it will only work of you take that first step of using the 240 grit stone to re-profile the edge to match the angle of the pipe spacer. If you skip that step, you may or may not be matching the angle of the bevel on the finer grit stones, and so may get much less effective sharpening.
Why does this guy’s boneheaded sharpening videos keep getting promoted on RUclips? If he keeps concentrating the sharpening area in the middle of the stone, he will create a dip that will affect the ability to continue to use the stone properly.

Serious questions. What's the piece of long tubing called? And what purpose does using the battery serve?
The green tubing is called a "Garden Hose" or in my neck of the woods in California, simply "Water Hose" and its to help you maintain the correct angle on a continuous level
I don't think it's a hose, it looks like a 1/2" or 3/4" piece of pvc to me.
@FrankMerendaBadShot Welp, I stand Corrected..My Apologies for giving out the wrong information, but in my defense at 330am & on the screen of my phone, it appeared to be a hose..
My Bad!!
Thank You, Brotha
I thought it was a hose 😊🤙🤙
Thanks 👍

Any method for different types of Scissore will be appreciated too
Aluminum foil or sandpaper. Fold aluminum a few times and cut from base to top. Sandpaper, similar to the stones, you can go from course to smooth by snipping.

Amazing Idea , Thank you for sharing this idea
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked the idea.

You share a great way to sharpen knives.
I would read all the comments here first before thinking his method is "great." Read all the comments.
Lol, yea right...

The video content is for guidance, if you practice it only takes 2 minutes

😂

Too many stones just 300 grit stone will do for the stainless knife. Heres a good idea: sharpen the knife in single stroke then with the other side after that smooth it in a soft wood slab maybe pine of something smooth. To retain its sharpness for a long time soak the knife in BOILing H2O for a minute or two let it cool then let it stay in the freezer over night 4 to 8 hrs max. That's it. . . I am from the PHILIPPINES.

If you have better way, please share to us. Thanks so much for your feedback

Actually the best thing to sharpen a blade with is the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug, or a solid glass tube, I promise you can't get it any sharper!
Explain
Best way to sharpen a knife is with the underside of an old ceramic plate.
I'd like to see that please:)
how bloody - do a video also -
how ???@@effenwolf
I get the guide but my general purpose knives get a 600(medium) grit diamond stone & leather with polishing compound on the rough side & they cut just as well or better in meat without the complicated stone process. I've been doing it for 45 years so I think I'm past the need for an angle guide for most sharpening unless I decide to reprofile the angle.
Bottom of a ceramic coffee cup. It out does this demo 10-1.
@carltondean3675 I do like what ceramic does for an edge especially the grade coffee cups are made of but the diamond stones I carry in my backpack or hunting pack are less likely to break if I set the pack down wrong. So I use the ceramic at home & will go to the diamond if I'm down to only one.

The use of rubber hose for guilding angel is a good hack, but better wrap it so not to leave rubber residual on the stone. Since this is a Japanese kitchen knife, the edge angle should be 17-18 degree
Wasn't rubber hose. PVC pipe.

The good thing for you is, we all watched your full video 🤣
cyanoacrylate adhesive glue
Hi,
As a Japanese person, I am happy that they use Japanese-made whetstones.
However, the way knives are sharpened is different from the Japanese style.

Is battery some feature related to electromagnetics.. or is it just mechanical polishing??
it's mechanically polished

Nice results, but people need to understand that it will only work of you take that first step of using the 240 grit stone to re-profile the edge to match the angle of the pipe spacer. If you skip that step, you may or may not be matching the angle of the bevel on the finer grit stones, and so may get much less effective sharpening.
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't even know where to get all those stones and you call it easy

Why does this guy’s boneheaded sharpening videos keep getting promoted on RUclips?
If he keeps concentrating the sharpening area in the middle of the stone, he will create a dip that will affect the ability to continue to use the stone properly.

I'll just buy a knife sharpener
The sharpener is bad, it wears down the knife blade and you will have to buy another one.
Explain what the battery does in sharpening the knife. I've been trying to figure that out.
