My dad always sharpened the knifes on the stone step at the back of the house and it worked every time. However there wasn't much left of the step after 40 years.
I'm guessing your Dad used to carry a knife ,like I did and still do . Even my school didn't mind if boys 10 and up carried a blade, the scouts encouraged it. Every souvenir shop sold knifes . Guess how many people got stabbed in fights after school ? None . White culture was to carry a knife and not use it to harm anyone.
I could have sharpened about five or six knives on my Whetstones in the amount of time it took to set that Contraption up, and they would have been hair whittling Sharp, but pretty interesting and innovative!
Most of the video was spent making that totally unnecessary contraption to hold the knife and the sharpener. Uhhh... my hands seem to work pretty well in holding the knife and the sharpener.
From Italy. As an Italian, I say that I admire you for the effort you put into creating this contraption, but as you know, Italy is the home of inventors and here we use electric knife sharpeners, whether they are battery-operated or connected to the electricity grid. Anyway you were good, greetings from Italy.

This is interesting but can you tell me what effect is caused by using the metal casing of the small battery please? I'm also intrigued by use of toothpaste? what effect does that have on the sharpening process? Like others have said, I tend to use a two grit carborundum stone which does the trick pretty well.
Battery is round with a metal (aluminum) casing. Aluminum oxide is as hard as sapphire. Toothpaste has fine abrasives and acts as a wetting agent. Roundness of battery decreases contact area, increasing unit pressure applied to the working surfaces. It's actually pretty clever, but this guy's knife handling skills are - unsafe to say the least.
And, to add to your sensible reply, your method also saves expensive damage to any good quality cutting tool and also saves severe damage to your phalanges and a costly drive to the ER for stitches!!
All the battery casings I opened were cheap zinc/steel alloy, aluminum would be relatively expensive, when you are making millions. The headline was misleading, the battery DID NOT do anything to make the knife sharp, it was used as an 'applicator' of the abrasive tooth paste to further sharpen the cutting edge; aluminium would have been too soft for this purpose, even with the minute particles of AlO3 formed, it would be useless compared to the tooth paste. As many observers commented an oil stone would be FAR SIMPLER and much much less time consuming! I think the author needs to improve on his knife sharpening skill, before making any more silly videos with misleading headline!
The process of using a round, hard, smooth object to finish the surface, is called burnishing. If the edge has been well shaped with the stone or paper, the burnishing can be done with a screwdriver shank for an awesome edge. Battery cases are zinc.
It is a joy to use a sharp knife. But all knife cannot be sharpened. Depends on the material it is made of. Rub either the knife or a grinding medium at an angle to knife edge. Sandpaper wrapped around a stick is the simplest. Cutting wheels of hand held cutters are very cheap. Any cocrete or sandy stone edge can be used for sharpening. Keep a piece of sand stone handy, it may be all that you need. Sand mortar, when set and dry is another choice.
Every knife can be sharpened. Some are harder than others, that’s all. You can make an exception with ceramic knives, because those require specialized tools and materials.
Muy interesante, yo manualmente y a ojo logro buenos filos segun el estado del cuchillo arranco con lija Numero bajo y voy aumentando hasta llegar a Ns altos y termino con cuero(suela) pero me gusto su presentacion lo experimentare
Yeah toothpaste and a battery. The abrasive has to be harder than the material you want remove. Particulate hydrated silica is similar to hardness of enamel, According to the Mohs Hardness Scale, tooth enamel earns a 5. That means it's about as hard as steel. You are better using a good sharpening stone and finish with a strop and a dab of silicon carbide paste. SiC is 4x harder.

Your "sharpened" knife is way blunter than the point that I call my knives blunt and need sharpening with waterstones (1000 grit followed by 5000). You are the king of blunt - even your drill bits are blunt! Many of your techniques using various tools are dangerous too. However, your contraption for getting a consistent angle is a good idea.

The angle jig is a good idea, but the tomato slicing at the end was painful to watch. You could use multiple grits of sandpaper on identical jigs and not need the toothpaste buffing. That would also preserve the angle and probably improve the end result. What grit would replace the toothpaste? 600?
1500 grit sandpaper, in my opinion, would be better than toothpaste. That opinion was formed by actually using 400 grit, then 1500 grit. Sharper still, following with 2000. 400, 1500 then 2000.

I put the cheese and the sliced Tomato in the bread to make and sandwich and ate (1minuet 10 seconds )

Total , 2 minuets 15 seconds .
And cleaned your teeth using the toothpaste saved, using the remaining 45 seconds.

videos like this are made to see how many people will actually fall for it and try to do this at home........
next time you slice a tomato try using a serrated knife.......works wonders! And when cutting paper.......use scissors.
