I got this game last year!!! I have about a dozen or more plays and I agree on the 4 player count! I also agree that player groups absolutely matter Moonrakers. I tend to win in groups who don't negotiate or aren't outspoken enough. You have to get in on every mission!!!!
Yeah, so it's Firefly meets Munchkin. I like the look of it but to get it down to Western Australia it will cost me $160. Not sure about that. I'm still thinking about it.
@@BoardGameCo That's the question, isn't it? Is there anything else about the game that would sway me to to part with my hard earned or close the door on it
A great concept that does not translate to a great experience. I hope they can double down on what people hoped to get out of it and I believe they have matured greatly since its release…so yeah let’s wait and see
The negotiation and betrayal aspects remind me of playing Advanced Civ (the boardgame, not the PC games), and just a little bit of Catan...but more of Civ.
Thanks for this honest review Alex. I have not played the game yet. I ordered it via the Veiled Fate Pledge Manager. Will the Moonrakers expansion also come to Kickstarter? If yes, when? :)
With Veiled Fate kickstarter you could get a mini-expansion for Moonrakers which will arrive by the end of this month for me. Otherwise, a new kickstarter for a big box containing 3 full expansions for Moonrakers should be up in July. This is coming from IV Studios in the comment section of the Veiled Fate kickstarter.
Metal coins are with all copies of the game, the only KS bonus was the mini expansion which adds one on the most powerful cards in the game, SoS (Still wish I had the KS Version 😭😭😭)
Oh man I want to love this game, its so well produced and in theory it should be accessible, but like you said you need a specific group for this and unfortunately i don't have that type of group. So it sits there sad and unplayed 😢.
I have so many games where I get excited at the prospect of playing them and buy them, without considering I do not know enough people who would be interested in the game.
@@r.l.jeffries1091 true that! Get sucked into the fomo lol. But I think I've been doing better recognizing when a game just won't get played. Good example is Black Rose Wars Rebirth, was super interested in getting it but it just wouldn't see the table enough to justify.
So your main problem with the game is the semi-coop aspect of it. Semi-coop tens to kill games for me. Lets just say I have a lot of people in my game group that would refuse to help me if I was winning.
Sort of, it's not really semi co-op though, there's always one person who's trying to win... In semicoop when players don't work together, the person who's being selfish can win. That is a much bigger problem. Over here, being selfish will likely have you losing... But if all players are selfish, or too many are selfish, then the game will likely drag out. So it's a different problem, not one of imbalance, rather one of making the game not fun.
Having to pick every card up to understand it gets very frustrating very quickly. Imagine four people all trying to remember what the new cards do and having to pick them up to remind themselves before deciding on a purchase. You're honestly better off taking photos on your phone then deleting them when they are purchased.
Yep, this can be a problem with any game with a lot of cards, it always gets easier as you know the game, but it certainly is something to take into account
@@BoardGameCo The cards could be a lot easier to read from a distance, though. We never have that problem with most deck builders like Dune Imperium, for instance.
Really appreciate the bias notice at the beginning. Really gives weight to the review

Looking forward to this one and Veiled fate arriving, love negotiation games, love deck-builders.
Enjoy!
Alex,
I love the sections that you’ve broken your review into.
I almost backed Mythic Mischief just to order Moonrakers in the PM lol. Man I need this game to be back in stock
@Leberschnitzel Yeah they said it wouldn't be which was the nail in the coffin for Mythic Mischief for me

For $160 I would want something better than Firefly + Munchkn :)

Love this one looking forward to the expansion. (Metal coins also came in the base game :o which is so amazing)

While personally I agree with you, the game overall is well rated and well loved.
I like this game a lot. Definitely one of my favorite negotiation games and it is definitely in need of an expansion
Do you have a top 10 or 20 or X number of favorite games in your collection? It'd be really interesting to see what that would be.
The negotiation and betrayal aspects remind me of playing Advanced Civ (the boardgame, not the PC games), and just a little bit of Catan...but more of Civ.
Player interactions in this one seems to be very similar to Cosa Nostra by Johannes Sich (Micro Macro).

great job! any follow up with the expansions? thank you

BTW, I’ve had success playing it on Tabletop Simulator

Moonrakers doesn't seem like a game for me. However, I'm liking the new review format
No James Bond and Jaws?
Oh Nu! Gave it up and it was the deluxe edition with all the mats ! Wish I still had it to try to expansion with it. Thanks for the review
What's the frequency of the review board updates?
