00:00 Introduction
01:31 The 10 Neurotic Needs
06:28 From Neurotic Needs to Neurotic Trends
One definition of neurosis that I like is "A failed attempt to adapt to reality" That's why neurotics are always anxious and hate change. They can't handle stress well so they tend to lead a monotonous life and their days are like one another.
Sounds like you are familiar with the definition.
What do you really want to say? @@dbuck1964
As a psychology student focusin on behavioral theories you're really making my life easier to enter the world of psychoanalysis! keep going!
Thank you, Guillermo. That makes me so happy! :)
Feels like a lot of these can be summarized as "maladaptive"? :) Rigid, inflexible, absolutistic goals, needs or obsessions. Love Horney's way of writing, such a clear thinker and observer! Fun fact, she was born in Blankenese outside Hamburg, the village where I currently live. :D
Your voice is soothing, calming and makes me feel secured. Thank you for this lesson. I am a Psychology graduate and currently in the process of going back to past lessons for refresher.

5 & 7 really triggered me, I always wanted to be a nobody, there're so many things that has the capacity to emotionally ruin me as I always feel on the edge. And Exploiting people? Im highly neurotic and always thought that the empathy was a result of it

Very insightfull vídeo! Made me curious about Karen Horney's work
Thank you, Paulo. Her work is incredibly interesting and much underrated.
Wonderful presentation - very clearly explained . I remember reading one of Horney's books back around 1975 and it helped me move into adulthood . Her insights are spot on .
Thank you so much! Yes, her books are amazing. Best wishes
very informative and easily communicated.
Glad to hear it was easy to understand 😊 Thank you for your comment!
Thank you! I'm very interested in health & when I was younger I used to read psychology books to try to figure out what was wrong with me & family. In the USA, mental health treatment diminished the spectrum of neuroticism's importance in daily functioning for psychologically abnormal people. The more I learn about neuroticism, the more I think it prevalent in the US. I really want for us to construct a language around neuroticism like yours which helps people understand & track where their neurotic behaviors start!
Excellent explanation
Thank you!
Thanks for the video of highly informative content..
You're so welcome. Thank you for your kind comment!

I used to LOVE to teach The Distrust Between the Sexes--it made the students squirm-learn! hahaha. a term I JUST made up. have read ALL her works. she was a total nutter and utterly brilliant.
That sounds FANTASTIC! Yep, she was a badass 😎
It's so good to hear about Horney. We don't spend much time on her in the United States.
She is a hidden gem. Her theories are so accessible and easy to understand, I hope more people become aware of her.
Thanks
That's so generous of you, Amanda! It's greatly appreciated.

great video 👍🤩, what book did you use for this video reference?
I used multiple resources! You can find good information here: webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/horney.html and also straight in Karen Horney's own book Self-Analysis :)
Is there any mnemonics to remember these needs??
Describes this chic I know EXACTLY 💯
Watching the video I began to think where is this neurotic component exactly.. May be 'normal' and 'neurotic' persons both feel +- the same, but it's just some acquired rationalisation patterns that make behaviour neurotic? Is there anything about such things in diagnostic manuals?
Hi Artem! This is precisely the tricky part. What is normal and what is not? Where do we draw a line and give a diagnosis (which in countries like Germany is essential to be able to have psychotherapy paid for by the health insurance)? In the diagnostic manuals they usually require 4 criteria to be met: A) symptoms (often a certain number of symptoms need to be present), B) duration (often symptoms need to be present for >6 months), C) impact/distress (if there is no distress for the person or others, there is no problem), and D) exclusion (for example, not due to drug use or another psychiatric disorder) to be met. This has been criticised because particularly for the symptoms it demands a certain cut-off value that doesn't always portray reality. For example in the new DSM-5 they included alternative models for diagnosing personality disorders. Currently there is a lot of research happening to focus on so-called "transdiagnostic processes" due to the fact that there is a lot of comorbidity between disorders and looking at underlying processes, such as emotion regulation, might be a better way to frame them than categorical diagnoses. Generally speaking, the difference between healthy and neurotic is often a difference in, among others, intensity and flexibility. Therefore, it's more useful to think of healthy and neurotic as a continuum rather than two distinct categories.
Isn't point no.-2 & point no.-9 contradictory??
Hello Lina,
You’re doing an excellent job. Keep it up. The way you pronounce personal names is German, are you German ?
