- Follow along with me as I create a multi-layer reduction linocut of one of my favorite Canadian Rockies hikes. This artwork was created by hand in three layers, using three different colors of ink and linocut printmaking techniques.

Thanks, Diana! It's a homemade system I created to help with registration. Now days, there are wonderful Ternes Burton registration pins available that do a similar job, which is great!
@@LindaCoteStudio Thank you for your answer! now I know about Ternes Burton as well. I studied printmaking but I focused on other techniques more and there are so many things I still don't know about. I always wondered how one gets to print so many layers with such precision. It's inspiring to see other artist's spaces and process.

Thanks for your reply. Just wanted you to know that your work has inspired this old retired toolmaker. For a lot of years I played around with art having to make a living and raising kids kept me from getting serious. For the last two years however things have changed. I started drawing almost every day and it changed my draftsmanship (for lack of a better word) and I got better. But, I wanted to tell a story with my art. Though my work isn’t as much nature as yours printing really hit a note with me. I was enamored with the edginess I guess. I got into the zen of doing the sketches. the rendering, the redrawing with sharpies to widen my lines, and finally the feel of the tools as I carved. Sometimes you just don’t know how much you help people. Just wanted you to also know that your videos are very much worth the watch. Terry

Nice! I so want to get back to woodblock and linoleum block printing after painting for so long. I love the system you've set up to keep the paper, etc., all accurately lined up for each phase of printing.

Love your work, you make the carving look so easy and our tools look so sharp. Please could l ask you two questions please, if you don't mind. do you sharpen those tools are just renew the blades? Also the paper you have used for your Fenland Trail looks beautiful to handle and print on, please could you tell me what make it is? Thank you
Hi Linda, thanks for watching! I am using a Speedball carving tool for printmaking, and the blades are replaced once they start to dull (the handle unscrews and they pop out). I find they will carve many blocks without losing their sharpness, but new blades are just a couple dollars, so they are cheap and not worth the challenge of self sharpening! (I have wood carving tools I sharpen myself and it is a PROCESS!) The paper I used for this linocut print is one I LOVE called Printmaster paper, an acid-free paper by Speedball. Unfortunately, in the last year or two I have found it very hard to find in the "bright white" like this - it's available in some art stores and online but it now comes in more of a cream colour. I am not sure why Speedball made the change as I love a really white paper. Here's a link on Amazon to it: www.amazon.ca/Speedball-Printmaster-Paper-Block-Printing/dp/B000BYVMHU. So, I'm not sure where it can be found...even contacting Speedball doesn't seem to help! I have found, though, that other brands of paper labeled "printmaking paper" are similar -- or even mulberry papers can work well, as well. Hope this helps!

Hi Robyn, thanks for your comment! The board is homemade from pieces I had in the studio. Cheap to make, but works well!
Linda, the paper you use looks very thin (and ideal for hand burnishing). Would you mind sharing what type it is please?

Beautiful work! Just bought the tools but need to know what is the press you glide over the paper called? I can't search for it because I don't know what it is called. Thank you.
Anna, I am so sorry for having missed this comment somehow! It showed up for me today but I see you posted it a while back! The press that goes over the paper is called a baren and they come in a variety of types from plastic (this one is from Speedball), to wood, glass and more. This one is one of the least expensive, and can be found in most any art stores or online stores that carry printmaking supplies! Happy printmaking - hopefully it's going well for you!

What lino material are you using? it seems so easy to cut!
I use different pieces depending on what I am creating: traditional lino and the newer soft linoleum. This piece was created with the soft linoleum because I printed it by hand without a press. You can see more on the block materials I use on the video here: ruclips.net/video/6Yg98Nfjkac/видео.html

Could you explain how you did the second layer of ink (the background "rocks"). I watched the video four times and still couldn't figure out what you did. Thanks much.
:-) So, for the 2nd layer, I wanted to keep the integrity of the block above the mountains for the dark trees, so carved the block for what was needed for the dark grey, then hand-cut a stencil for the outline of the mountains. I laid a stencil between the block and the paper to create that outline. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful. It looks like your paper is dry? I am doing a lot of work in lino right now but I always use a wet paper.
Thanks, Jennifer. I always print with my linocuts on dry paper because I am not using a press at all, but rubbing the block/paper with a hand baren. Are you using a press?
what type of paper do you use? weight etc? Thanks
Hi Nicola, I use all kinds of different papers in my printmaking practice, but for this project I wanted one that was quite white, acid-free and takes multiple layers of ink well. I really like these videos however you haven’t done any for a while. Just wondering what you’re into lately.
I'm glad you enjoy these videos! Creating videos - and keeping up on many social channels - takes quite a bit of time, and all of it comes out of an artist's creative time. Between filming, planning the storyboard and editing, a video like this can take many hours to create to the final version. So, for now, I have opted to simply focus on one channel to give myself more time to create my art.
