It may be because they have heard different info. I have been informed you don’t wet the back and sides as that can lock heat in, one needs to keep the underside wet and cool, the throat, breastbone, legs, tummy, groin.
@@zareenaisabella4291 it's not a joke. This summer's been horrible for dogs in Europe. Dogs literally die bc their owners are ignorant how fast they shut down in extreme heat, how fast a car heats beyond limits, and that treating heatstroke with ice cold water is an effective way to kill their best friend.
Here in England we don't really have hot summers but it does happen. The day Hachi came to our lives, I prepare everything, I bought fans, cooling mat and jacket for him (I got them from pets at home). We do not take him out for walks when its hot. Maybe to us, its bearable but it is his paws, it may just be too hot. And always bring bottle of water. When we travelling in the car, the air con will be on just for Hachi. Love my baby so much. Thank you Dr Jones.
I keep two tee-shirts in the freezer that I take on walks with me. They defrost and if my pups get too hot I place it on their tummy and across their backs. Also cold water in the tub works wonderfully.
My anxiety is so much worse in the summer because I constantly worry about people leaving dogs in hot cars or walking them on sizzling hot asphalt, etc... I think most people have good intentions, so just making them aware of what they're doing wrong (in a gentle way) is crucial. Thanks for sharing this information!
Oh, my goodness. Pipster (and you) had me in stitches! Thanks for the great advice. It's always pleasant to watch your videos and great seeing how tolerant and patient all your pets have always been in the videos. It shows who you are as their human.
Thank you for these wonderful tips. It all makes sense now the way my dog was acting earlier this week. It’s now short a.m and p.m walks until the fall.
I see too many pets in cars which we know are hotter then the temperatures outside. I spray my dog down in hot weather and have a fan going. You are a fantastic vet !
Needed this right now. Lily got a blade of grass up her nose and busted a dew claw half way off trying to rake it out. The vet here saved us twice. 6 lb. Chihuahua mix with a 4 to 6 inch blade of grass up her nose. Her little nose is maybe an inch. Guess we'll be playing inside with the ac on. As always. Love and Respect 🌻
I carry 6 big neck cool wraps,no freezing needed they stay cold for hours works very good.I wrap one around each of my 3 dogs neck, cools blood flowing to and from head and use close pin for clasp so it can break away if needed.
Thank you so much for posting this, I didn't know any of this before today and I found it while searching about heatstroke in dogs as my dog Billy had a seizure yesterday Looking back on it, he had the signs and I feel very bad for him but at least I know what I'm looking for if it happens again
My heelers have an air conditioned / heated dog house. They’re 11 years old and really showing their age now. We used to play ball for hours every day. Not so much now like we used to . I have a golf cart they’ve alwaysrode with me or just followed along but this Texas heat is dangerous so time playing and running is limited . They stay in their doghouse with cold a/c and fans and in winter they have heat. I love my dogs (3 heelers and a small chihuahua. I also keep a water trough full of water for them to get in. They love the water hose sprayed on em too. They’re my children my life is as dedicated to my dogs and catsand my other livestock as theirs is to me
Thank you soooo much for this!! montreal is currently experiencing a heat wave and this information is super critical for me to be more mindful of my best friend during the summer !
Excellent video! Audio/video sync was a little funny in some parts on my playback. Still excellent information that I needed for my new little rescues in the dessert southwest US.
Thanks for posting!!! Reminded me to share posts about heat-stroke for our "kids" as a reminder. Your's is my first post, along with emergency (CPR) videos, etc. Love you!!!
Ty I was needing this! My 2yr old dachshund and I are living homeless outside. At times it’ll get real hot, I’ll see his chest moving in and out super fast when resting, but he won’t pant. I thought I’d had hurt him by an outside hose bath, since he was so hot that day. We’re not use to the heat at all, but had to leave in an emergency situation from my home. God help us get in a home before July and August heat comes. My dog has seizures on an average of one a mth even before the heat temps set in.
I usually take my dogs on what I call a "lazy walk" when it's hot outside. A lazy walk is putting them in the car and taking them to the open field where we usually walk. I don't want their paws on the hot concrete or asphalt. I always have a sport bottle with water in case they need some water.
I go by my dog's tongue. When he is cool, his tongue is pink, when he gets overheated his tongue turns a bluish-purple colour. My dog is a breed that loves to run. That was fine when he was younger and would run all day in the heat. Now he is 15 years old. He runs alongside of me in the ditches while I ride on an electric scooter. While he is running I keep an eye on his tongue. When it turns purplish-blue, I make him get up on the bike. Usually, he is pretty good and lets me know when he has had enough but, other times he just wants to run. Coming back into the city I am usually in high gear. The wind cools him off and his panting stops.
I have no AC just fans ..and in B.C last few days it's been 35-41 degrees C!! We're all suffering. I keep my dog in shade. Or near a fan if we're home...I bought him a turtle pool for the deck too. Everything helps .
My dog did this the other day! Her back leg cramped up real hard and she started flopping, all while trying to stay happy and walk with her tail wagging. She had been doing more vigorous exercise about 6:30pm and she panted excessively and drooled a fair bit. Her heart rate went up and I thought it was a full blown seizure! It lasted only a few minutes but very scary! She finally drunk plenty of water at the vets that evening and had a high temperature! She's had a couple days to sleep it off. Won't be doing it again!
I Andrew. This was a very important video. People please leave your pets at home in this heat, don't leave them in a hot car. I saw a dog in a hot car and I called Crime Check to report it. If the owner wasn't back as soon as he was I was going to have to do something drastic that could have gotten me arrested. (I was going to break the glass) when the guy came back out I told him not to leave his dog in the car like that in this heat period of course as they always say ( I was just running in the store real quick) I proceeded to tell him what if there was a long line, what if you forgot something and decided to shop for more and forget your dog was out in the car. I leave my dog at home. The only time I take her in the car is to the vets. Dogs are just not safe in vehicles, not because just of heat but because if you were to get in an accident your dog could get hurt or even worse get thrown out of the car and they run away out of fear. But today I see people with their dogs all the time and their cars and I know dogs love car rides but we must be good parents and make good decisions
Thank you! This is especially important as my dog is suspected to have laryngeal paralysis. I have watched your laryngeal paralysis video and found it very helpful. Since laryngeal paralysis eventually involved the back end and nerves, could you make a video on supplements or herbs that help to keep the nerves in a dog in working order?
Amazing video, but I can't seem to understand how to defirenciet between a dog panting regularly and having a heat stroke? Can a dog with heat stroke stop panting and start eating and cuddling normally after 10 minutes?
I have just found your channel would like to thankyou , in the advice how to treat cat flu. I had rung my vets as they wanted to charge £30 to look at my cat before any medicine as a few months ago the vet saw my cat saw he was healthy and had cat flu and now I would have to take him back to get charged more and to be ripped off instead of just giving the medicine .
Thank you Dr. Jones. I just took in a rescue dog less than a month ago and I live in the desert. I take my little maltese out for a walk as early as 4 am and have to wait for the sun to go down and usually walk him around 9 pm. Tonight it was 105, and he needed to go. He did poop twice and was doing fine. Then he stopped and would pee every 10 seconds or so. He was also panting. It was a lazy walk on grass and no physical exercising. I put him in the car and brought him home. That was 15 minutes ago. He seems fine now. Do any of you know if the excesive peeing could be because of the heat?
Hello Dr.Jones, love your videos....my 3months old GSD is diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy...and having mild convulsions with continues Head wobbling and jaw jerks... She's on Phenobarbitone 15mg B.I.D right now...its very painful to see her convulsing. Can she be cured completely ever???what all precautions can i take and safe medications to give...kindly suggest...thank you in advance..
Sadly my granddog is getting put down today because he had a heat stroke last Monday and he never recovered he's been in the hospital all weekend and he hasn't improved
Would you recommend vigorously rubbing your dog in the cool down process also, to get circulation moving faster?? or is there a drawback to that that I am not thinking of?? xx
So a dogs weight? I guess if a dogs very overweight then they have a higher risk of heatstroke? What about diet? How does that affect the length of time in heat?
Living in Arizona, if I can't put my barefoot feet on the sidewalk I don't take my dog for a walk, besides in summer(117 and up) I take him out very early in the morning and or late after sun donw.
It's been in the 100s here, I don't let my dogs out except to use the bathroom. I cannot understand why people take their dogs out in their cars, worse leave them in the back of trucks and even worse, those who leave them outside or chain them where they can't even seek shade. Many poor animals don't even have water. Or...putting the water bowl in the hot sun...such cruelty.
Surprised you didn't mention the ears. If you ever had a dog cut his ear you know how much blood flows through them. I wet my dogs head and ears to prevent an overheating problem.
Why the heck disliked this video? It’s imperative dog owners and handlers learn this content! 🙏❤️
the ones that dislike are more probably dog abusers

Is hyperventilating the same as a heat stroke ?????????? Our bully was running after a drone and is over hyperventilating
If your dog is hyperventilating, it may indicate that they are at risk of heatstroke.
Thank you for your reply ,, 🙏,,she's doing great 👍
Walk them early morning, short 5 minute walks in the afternoons, then a long pp time early evening and night. They can't take the 90 degree sun.
also dont give ice to dogs- it will have the opposite effect where the dogs body will think its cold and turn up its heat. blessings
