GM Getting RID of Apple CarPlay + Android Auto...

- General Motors revealed that they won't have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their future EVs starting with the 2024 Blazer EV coming this year. Their reasoning for this change seems pretty weak, what do you think about it? Would not having smartphone integration be a dealbreaker for you?

Finally... A car brand for folks that use rotary phones. Rotary phone owners rejoice.
This comment just made my day....
It's like the target audience for Toyota Avalon buyers. Old people with no clue. Old people with a clue buy a Lexus.
Probably first to debut in the Corvette 😂😂😂
I heard new EVs will eliminate Bluetooth and will instead come with 8 track players also.
I do not understand this. Why would having the features integrated in to the car instead of relying on the third party app be bad?
The chance of me buying a new car keeps shrinking every day.
I 💙💙💙my present car, it's paid for from day one, love it's looks, drives like a dream, I don't want or need ACP or AA. Life is good!
I’m with you 100%.
Companies pull this bullshit because they know the public will buy it because it's new and shiny and techy. In poorer markets cars are much more basic and really that's all you need. Heck, Toyota sells a Land Cruiser that doesn't have an infotainment screen.
Don’t buy a new GM
Same here
I wouldn't buy a car without it. Car manufacturers have had their entire existence to do good infotainment and still can't do better than the first iteration of carplay/Android auto
I have an 18 RAV4 and we’re just fine without them
😅😅
Same
I'm sorry Android automotive is better than carplay or Android Auto
If they can do better job with an infotainment that doesn't lag and freeze up at then I'll consider it. I'm just pissed they'd partner with google which I hate. They should have done something like Tesla using open sourced technology.
GM is doing this because they have created a subscription service for their navigation. How can they force their buyers to subscribe to the navigation when you can easily use carplay? It’s a problem that will continue to plague the industry.
Yep, Toyota does the same
These car companies need to come to grips with the fact that the only people paying for car subscriptions are going to be old people that don't know better.
@@dtay8913 you can use CarPlay in Toyotas so what do you mean?
@@aluisious the subscription service implemented in the new tundra.
@@dtay8913 and just about every new Toyota with the new interface. Thankfully Entune 3 still has built in nav
Let me guess it's gonna become subscription service
No, they will just charge ridiculous prices for upgrades.
Capitalism 101 is to sell you things you never own.
Exactly. The amount of people who subscribe to On-Star probably numbers in the dozens - and only because they're sales consultants (for GM) so they can demo it to new buyers. They were forcing people to pay for On-Star about a year ago - and that went over like a lead balloon. People don't really use the built-in Navi even when it's "free" (included) in a package let alone opting for it. I own a new Mini and it's not bad (the built in Navi) but I still rather use Apple CarPlay.
I’ll bet my bottom dollar on it, seeing as how gm owns OnStar, they will put the navigation feature under a OnStar plan. Of course they are going to bundle it with their data plans and all that.
I just bought a 23 HD duramax. They have been calling me every 3 days trying to sell me a plan. The EV only bs is just the pilot, I believe it’s planned for all gm products.
The new GM Blazer EV SS was at the top of my list for a new car this year. Not anymore, this is a deal killer for me. GM just lost a repeat buyer (calculate lifetime buyer algorithm here GM)
why buy gm anyway
Same. I love my Bolt (especially the wireless Android Auto feature) and was looking forward to the Blazer, but I canceled my reservation after this news. This is the major reason I haven't bought Tesla either, I refuse to be locked into someone's ecosystem.
All of my vehicles in the last 10+ years have been GM (Before my Bolt I leased a Terrain, before that was a leased Equinox, and before that a purchased Malibu). I've never had major issues with them and since I get a GM employee family discount they've been my default. But this really is a deal breaker for me.
@@bstock gm is a poor mans car 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@mattnorman5241 I'm not trying to show off. Buying expensive depreciating assets to look cool is a great way to stay poor IMO.

I am all for you calling out GM or any manufacturer on their BS. As a former Chevy dealership salesman 👨💼 they definitely have made me scratch my head on many occasions with their decisions and direction.
Did someone at GM just get hit with the stupid stick?! This is just mind-boggling levels of stupidity.
You really have to ask?
@@richardbutton1179 yeah, I should have specified it as the "stupider than normal stick"
Matt, that was one of the reasons why I've loved my Chevy's. The integration with Android Auto with my Camaros and other vehicles that I've driven has been exceptional. I don't think I would buy one without it. So GM is about to lose out on my next vehicle purchase for sure
That's like saying "one of the reasons I love my Chevy's is that they come with four tires".
I mean that's a weak excuse to love a car manufacturer... all of them support Apple Carplay and Android Auto these days. Kinda like having 4 tires.
@@wolfshanze5980 would you buy a car that DIDNT come with 4 tires? He can like GM and one if it’s features (even if in other cars) could just be 1 big reason among others that they like the car. I like my current Lexus because of its active cruise control and lane assist even if it’s on other cars, I feel like my Lexus is very smooth almost Tesla like on the highway.
Ah, ok it makes sense, GM is trying to "integrate experiences that transform how customers engage with their vehicles, such as..."
buying a different car brand Got it!
All jokes aside, great video Matt. Sucks to see GM doing this.
Lol
GM wants to take back control of their vehicles. This will back fire.
The reason they wanna do this is because they wanna release subscription based services that your phone already provides!
You hit the nail on the head. Carplay/Auto is making built in Nav redundant and it's there attempt to take it back.
Same thing back with after market radios - and the new ones generally suck and have inconsistent controls ever since.
The April fools joke was that somehow GM is still in business.
same thing i say when i see people dumb enough to own them and proud to have a pos car
I’m a GM guy right now with a 21 Camaro LT1 and a 22 Silverado 2500 HD High Country. I will definitely switch brands if they remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The onstar system already sucks and they try to nickel and dime you to death with subscriptions.
They aren't taking it away from any vehicles so your Camaro and Silverado are fine. I'm a 2019 Camaro owner with OnStar as well.
@@scottdavis_34 I know but I already plan to purchase new vehicles. They’re starting with the EVs. Knowing them it’ll make it’s way to everything. We’re looking at the new HD trucks now and I was looking at the Blazer SS EV also.
Hopefully they leave the non EVs alone.
@@michaelshaffer2319 Understood. Hold onto that Camaro though if you can. Its just going to go up in value. Definitely keeping mine for the foreseeable future.
@@michaelshaffer2319 the 24’ is nice, I just picked up a 23 LT. But we all know when these manufacturers do a refresh there’s always the 1st model year bugs to work out.
Going to be interesting to see how the new upgrades to the L5P pan out in the long haul.
I too thought it was a April fools joke, turns out the fools are in the upper echelon suits at GM. First they mandate OnStar in all new vehicles and charge you $1,500 for that privilege. Now this? Utterly ridiculous. Thanks for the update Matt
Good news for the automotive cellphone mount industry.
Spicy Matt is best Matt
Great video! This is strictly a move firmly rooted in GREED. Right now, all our data while using Apple CarPlay and Android auto stays on the phones. GM wants to be the automotive Google and data mine every piece of your life. Contacts, locations, any apps you use, will now go directly into their system.
I agree, Matt. Their 'reasons' are nothing more than excuses. I get why Tesla and Rivian don't allow AA/Carplay due to the number of integrated features in the screen (not that I agree with this approach. I don't). I hope one of these manufacturers realizes that sometimes less is more and integrating everything into a touchscreen interface isn't the best idea. Clearly, subscription services are driving these decisions. It sucks, IMO, and is a terrible trend. I doubt people will vote with their wallets to punish these companies.
They want to keep all that telemetry data money to themselves. I believe lot of these EVs are just platforms for data collection and potential ad platforms. When they talk about navigation features, they probably mean they want to force people to use their in car platform because they can sell the eyeballs and data.
They better back track this crap or they are gonna lose a lot of customers. I personally wouldn’t buy a vehicle without CarPlay.
Sales for those $300 dash mounted AA/CarPlay screens will be huge - I can see dealers including them when you buy a new Blazer EV.... Just don't tell me that GM got rid of the aux jack ;-)
The biggest issue with infotainment systems is how many years will the manufacture update the software and the extra cost for a cellular plan for the car.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay offer the latest user experience, up to date maps, software, etc, on any car without the extra headaches.
GM literally just doing GM things. I'm not too surprised at this point.
I have been waiting for the Equinox EV to come out thinking it was going to have Apple car play. Now I’m thinking I need to look for another car to purchase. Sad 😞
If the implementation of their software is good why would we need car-play?
@@gregkramer5588 because if the hardware no longer supports the software then it’s a problem
Remember it’s cheaper to get a new phone than it is to get a new car
@@gregkramer5588 Maybe, but ask yourself or look up how many good products or services google started then killed off?
@@glenjones172 The battle for embedded OS design wins is ongoing. Android is just popular because it is basically an off shoot of Linux. At this point many app level developers are so familiar with it that it has very good standing in the market. Google would be silly to replace it and they are not silly. The likely hood of GM being bankrupt is as high as google dropping android in the foreseeable future.
gm is bottom of the barrel get something better
Feels like a major security risk to privacy. They likely want the kitchen sink of data collection, and then you will have to rely on GM to keep this android image updated in order to patch security risks. Which they have a horrible track record of.
What a bonehead decision! I always use my Apple Maps because it goes to my watch and vibrates when I have to make a turn or I can set it in my apartment and then when I leave it just carries over into the car. I don’t have to reset everything all the time! Thank goodness I bought a new Honda ..lol
Every argument leads to the conclusion that they want to charge their customers for features that they can charge a monthly subscription for. Some of which many don't want or we already have. As a 40+ year GM truck driver, this is a boneheaded move worthy of looking elsewhere.
Lucky for me there isn't a modern GM I would own.
I'd take a pre-70's GTO but then that won't have it either!

Having Apple Carplay (or not) is a deal breaker for me. I was looking for the new BYD Atto3 but I will wait until BYD will have integrated that.
I don't understand why GM is not able to run their system and Apple Carplay and Android Auto in parallel, as Mazda does it since years.
Wireless CarPlay is a must for every vehicle I own from now on. This is a deal breaker for me potentially buying a new GM.
I wanted to get a Porsche, no Android Auto turned me away.
It's a deal breaker for me. I will not switch phone OS for a car.
I don't ever see myself buying an EV, this would be another reason to keep me away.
It cracks me up that people only hear what they want to hear. Reading through the comments you'd think GM was discontinuing AA & ACP in ALL of their new vehicles. A well known radio talk show host was saying last week he'll switch brands because he's not going to buy another Yukon Denali that doesn't have ACP.
Agreed, that’s a deal breaker for me, and I liked the Blazzer…now instead my eye turns to the Mach E…I’d never ever buy without the basics of apple car play and android auto…and NO is also never pay to subscribe to them either…for $50,000 come on, I ain’t also then paying for any added BS subscriptions
Did I need another reason to completely ignore GM and their products? I guess it's my lucky day.
they been shitty since the early 2000s
Two reasons why I believe that GM is doing this: 1) They want to FORCE you to subscribe to their wireless system (aka On-Star) - who subscribes (unless they are forced to) to the in-car 4G/5G radio? A: just about nobody. 2) GM would like you to "upgrade" when the in-car infotainment system starts to slow down or needs an upgrade. I had a 2015 Kia Soul that was able to be upgraded several times (for free) and even if the main system didn't perform or had bugs you could always use AA / CarPlay. They also believe they can pull a "Tesla".
You didn't mention a third reason. GM wants to get subscriptions from USED car buyers as well. Once that vehicle is on its second or third owner, GM can still get money from used car owners through subscription services - something they have limited access to now. An EV without an up-to-date charging and navigation system is pretty much useless. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay can meet that for used car buyers, so if GM shuts off that access, those buyers are forced to go with the GM system.
Kia/ Hyundai not having wireless Android auto/Apple car play has been an issue for some potential buyers but to not have it at all in 2024 is silly.
Yep - and the strange part is that Hyundai/Kia does have wireless - just not on the higher trims with larger displays - they've be super cagey about why almost as if they could do it but choose not to. Every manufacturer seems to have odd things they do not support - such as Mini not having AA support but most new BMW's now do. You really have to verify what works and how well - almost like 2011 all over again....
@@Scotty_in_Ohio The average consumer seems to have given up on manufacturers voice commands. Although siri or Google within the system seems more natural.
Blizzard: Do you not have phones?!
GM: Do you have phones?!
FIGHT
Bottom line. There's big subscription money on the table with their own operating system in their ev's. Have your own and then integrate it the consumers phone. Its alway$ about the bottom line.
As soon as I heard about this I knew what was up, subscriptions for every car feature and various levels of feature subscriptions! The reason for CarPlay and android auto integration is for consumers to be able to use the device they use the most on a daily basis as seamlessly as possible without having to setup and configure another separate device and extra costs to the consumer! This has gone out the window and opens up a can of costly wormy worms for the consumer. I won’t be buying any GM vehicle or other brands if they don’t support CarPlay or android auto period!
This will become standard in the industry.
I have a reservation on a Blazer EV. I'm seriously thinking of walking away. This is all about taking more money out of are pockets and having more control over are information. G.M seriously wants to subscribe the consumer into perpetual debt. I will not pay a monthly subscription for charging speeds or for charging station locations.
cancel that pos gm aint worth going broke for
Trust me, I’m seriously scratching my head right now because I have a reservation for one of those GM EV trucks. Not sure what I’m going to do
You are 100% correct, I’m looking to change to my first EV and I was all in with the new Blazer but now….I will look else where with Apple Car play! Is too bad ….
This is so typical of GM, and one of the big reasons I find it impossible to like them or their products. They're consistently their own worst enemy.
Maybe 'mandatory self-sabotage' is a clause written into everyone's contract, and we just don't know it?
nah that's a deal breaker for me I can't see myself owning a car without apple carplay I mean it just integrates everything so well like I absolutely love the way waze is integrated. bad decision on chevys part but what people fail to remember is that chevy never listens to their customers so I'm 100% sure they don't care about any of the backlash or loss of sales they are going to get from this.
Apple Car Play and for me personally, Android Auto is one of the few modern car features that is a must have. Both Ford & GM are are just giving business to Tesla at this point.
Go Matt go! When in doubt just assume it's about money, because it often is. The phone mount bit was hilarious but true.
I have a Blaver EV reservation. When it comes time to convert to an order I will move on to another manufacturer if they don't have CarPlay.
I hope Honda can figure out how to get around this for the Prologue and ZDX.
Absolutely thought this was an April fools joke when I saw article and can’t believe it’s true. 🤦♂️
They’re already known for building trash cars, now they’re taking away a crucial feature. There’s people out there that wouldn’t buy a car if it didn’t have Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. GM sales are going to fall.
People buy Teslas and Rivians which don't have either and Toyota quite literally just began implementing it. Neither one of them lose sales over that.
@@dtay8913 Tesla and Rivian are software companies who build cars. They’re on a whole new level compared to typical manufacturers.
@@dtay8913 the difference is those two brands have a rabid fan base that doesn't necessarily care about logic over coolness value and a few specific features.

This is ridiculous I was seriously entertaining buying this vehicle until now. One of the biggest complaints about the telluride is that it dsnt have wireless Apple CarPlay and android auto now Gm is not including it at all Wtf Gm
I was really looking forward to transitioning to an EV with something affordable from GM. Not now. It is all about the license fee to Apple and GM wanting to collect subscription money to split with Google, and Google wanting to throw up ads for whatever you are near. Greed is so ugly.
Same here. Made a similar comment. Too bad they seem intent on putting greed ahead of common sense
They can't justify this just like hotels can't justify resort fees. But unfortunately resort fees ended up being a successful tactic, I guess time will tell for this... I certainly won't be buying a new car without Apple / Android support
Imagine they locked you out your vehicle because your free trial expired 😕
The only way I can see the phone issue is if u lose ur phone or it get stolen but they should still give the option for Android auto
wow ,this is such a dumb move, its completely backwards. They should be going all-in on android auto and apple carplay instead of spending their money on R&D of their own software that is Never going to be as good.
We have a 2022 Yukon and when you go to the navigation on the screen it wants you to get a plan with google. Nope I won’t get a plan! It has apple CarPlay. So we just use the CarPlay.
They will have Android Automotive system, just like Android auto, so it's not really needed, but for Apple users, that could be an issue
I agree Matt. Just don't know where GM is going or thinking.
Thank you. They 're coming with subscriptions soon 100%
GM is doing this primarily for the same reasons Teslas still don't have Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Customer Data.
If you are not buying a heavy duty truck, look past GM
I was thinking the same thing... They want to collect data
Apple car play is a must have an I will never buy a car without it so....... wack decision
Navigate on phone is like way more cheaper way more easier way more accurate than GM navigate system.
Apple CarPlay is a must for me
It looks to me like they are having a competition with Dodge as to who can fail the quickest and cry for a gov't bailout.
You said it. Subscription services are a continuing revenue stream.
Will this affect Prologue or ZDX? I am seriously consider getting Prologue or ZDX, but if these 2 don’t come with Apple CarPlay, then they are instantly out of my shopping list.
Nobody else is doing this it seems, at least for now. The Accord has the new Android-based system and still retains CarPlay and Android auto. Hopefully those cars aren’t affected by the partnership and it seems to just be a decision, not a technical issue.
@@MattMaranMotoring The difference with the Prologue and ZDX are they are GM built Ultium vehicles
Wow Chevy you really dropped the ball.
People will do exactly what GM says and wants. The man is always right.
they been brainwashed since the 2000s
I was considering looking into the new Equinox EV, but if this is true, then they just lost me before they even had me. Looks like they just wanna be able to charge for map updates, all about the subscriptions.
It's all about the money , they don't want to split the money from the data.
Yeah I get it's a little upsetting. But considering that cell phone reception does not work 100% across the United States using it for navigation sucks when you have poor cell reception whereas factory navigation used satellite signals which has constant reception as long as it has a clear view of the sky.
As a truck driver who travels across the United States. I've been in areas where I could not use my apps on my phone for navigation. Had I had a regular GPS I would have been able to have better navigation options
I'm not against built-in nav, I wanted it in my Bullitt for that same reason, as a good backup. But forcing people to use it is another thing.
@@MattMaranMotoring I will have to agree with that forcing stuff because i'm not for this whole subscription thing that some of these manufacturers want to do
I prefer built in nav too. Some brands are offering connected nav. But if you’re offering CarPlay or android auto why would you even bother offering an oem navigation
@@MattMaranMotoring You seem to have misunderstood GM's intentions I think, at least based on the articles I've read.
If you have an Android phone now, nothing will really change for you. Instead of using Android Auto as some sort of hokey pass-through to interface your car's infotainment system to Google Maps on your phone, the cars will be running Android natively, and will have Google Maps available natively. It is "built-in" in the sense that you no longer need your phone or Android Auto as a pass-through. But the end product should be the same, which is Google's regular ecosystem of apps (Google Maps, Spotify, etc.). Or, I suppose GM wants the end product to be even better. In theory, if the app is running natively, they can better use the full screen real estate, they aren't limited by Bluetooth bandwidth, they aren't limited by the Android Auto API specifications, etc.
The only thing I haven't been able to glean from their statements so far is what happens to Apple CarPlay users, are they just forced into Google's ecosystem whether they like it or not? Will they also include native apps for Apple Maps or something? Can't figure that one out yet.
Seeing as my phone is my GPS and my music player this is 100% a deal breaker for people mover cars. I currently drive a Corvette and if they did this in Corvettes it might well be a deal breaker for that as well.
I agree with you. I’m in the mist of buying a new car and getting rid of my Mazda cx9. I really wanted the blazer but I’m not happy that they won’t have the Apple car play. I have the Chevy euv bolt and love it. Now I’m looking for something that has those same features. The ford mache looks like the one I’m going to get. Nice looking car and the features I’m looking for.
My guess: it’s all about subscription revenue. And their current offerings are extremely poor value for money.
Just making it easier and easier for people to hold on to their cars longer
They are litteraly shoehorning a subscription service. Cause I highly doubt that they are gonna pay for the additional cell overhead out of the kindness of their heart. Good job moving backward GM.
Matt is pissed :) . Not a fan of GM unless it's a Vette
I really like my silverado, was thinking of downsizing to a Colorado or canyon in a year or 2. I'll go get a ranger now. Even if it's just ev vehicles that's a slippery slope, no justification GM makes is gunna convince me
Edit: wouldn't be surprised if GM didn't want to pay for a license or something to use this software
The real winner may wind up being Garmin with portable GPS units!
Matt, that’s a real head scratcher and absolutely would be a dealbreaker for me.
Isn't it funny if Apple creates a walled garden, but people complain if another company keeps Apple out?
With Android Automotive as the replacement for Android Auto tells ne that we might have to pay NOT only for Wifi Service for your Car but also service just to use things like online radio stations or even google playstore to access our needed app or something like that. I could be wrong?
The only thing that got automakers over the "hump" with having infotainment system SO BAD was the availability of AA / CarPlay - I really don't think car makers have come _that far_ in the past 8-10 years to where you won't miss it (AA / CarPlay) - many buyers (especially ones where this will be their first EV) will decide to go with another brand. I do see GM's point but they'll have to solve a bunch of other issues such as having all of your map favorites, native waze, all of the streaming music apps, etc... I suppose it's possible that these cars will just be another Android device but unless you can setup/configure items in your house there will be limited adoption and it WILL upset those who don't want to use a Google account and are Apple users....
Thank you for this report. Being that GM is doing this to their so-called electric suv it probably won’t be long before they decide to do it to their gas powered vehicles. Now I know for sure I will never buy a GM product.
I fail to understand how having CarPlay/Android Auto integration available requires that the driver have a cell phone. Does this mean they will eliminate Bluetooth/Handsfree phone calls?
Ah, yes; it's really all about selling subscriptions. Good luck with that, GM ….
Sounds like GM ONLY wants you to use their product. If, BIG IF, the over-the-air updates are FREE and they're as CRISP and INTUITIVE as Android Auto / Carplay, I don't mind the consolidation
Before I drove my vette, I made sure it had CarPlay. Ford gm and fiat have all downgraded their CarPlay I assume to push mapping subscriptions. It looks insultingly bad on their trucks, my friends are buying Kia and I’m probably going to end up in a tundra, my first foreign. Pushing subscriptions and selling user data instead of car sales makes me think the big 3 are about to have another crash
I love my 2017 Chevy Bolt. I won’t by a future GM product without CarPlay or Auto.
Need to force people to pay for navigation and those sweet XM kickbacks. Google Maps and apps like Pandora kill anything GM has on tap.
It was so fantastic when my 22 f250 integrated navigation ceased to work... come to find out... they want me to pay for that service... fuc em
I can’t afford a new car anyway I won’t even run in to this problem for 5 to 10 years when these cars are on the used market
GM are the Cleveland Browns of the auto industry.
The absolutely dumbest thing they possibly do. In car infotainment will never beat Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Period.
Not to mention, not having Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is a safety issue, forcing you to look at your phone for important notifications.
Very strange reasoning. I was planning to buy a GM EV in the future...it won't happen.
Thanks Matt!
Hope you, Beth and the little one are doing good.
