I think a mistake is not talking. Even if I have no viewers I am talking to myself. Making jokes and acting as if there are 100 people watching. If I go to a stream and the streamer is silent then I typically move on. I want to be noticed, I want to be part of a community.
I think that is my biggest issue. I tend to be in PSN parties when I'm streaming but because I'm using Xsplit it doesn't pick up the party audio more mine. Though that's when I'm not using the built in PS4 streaming option. When I'm on PC though I have to make it a habit to pop out of the party and plug my mic into the computer to talk. The last stream I tried to type but it slowed things down in terms of gameplay.
About the last tip, i went full force, twice a day, for 2 years, not getting any where on twitch. Since i moved to mixer, i've been doing so much better, so many more people come in. And after changing my "schedule" to mon-wed-fri-sunday, taking 3 days off, it feels like i have more energy, more passion, more interactivity. The days off i can now spend on working behind the scenes, graphics, touch portal, twitter, being a regular viewer in other people's stream. It's the breath of fresh air that i very much needed. Personal health is important, and if that means taking 2 or 3 days off in the week, do it, you'll thank yourself later.
I really enjoyed the end of the video. Those numbers are people and it is amazing that they are giving us their time! That will stick with me for a while for sure!

Great video. And great advise. One mistake that I make that no one talks about is when stream starts and I’m muted. I’m talking for like, 10 minutes before realizing I’m muted. When a viewer points it out to me I unmute, apologize and then laugh at myself. 😂 I love the end there too.
Its a good thing I knew all the mistakes I did back then and this video just reminded me to not repeat those mistakes again. I also switched to Facebook Gaming from streaming on Twitch because I thought of trying out new platforms. Now with the help of knowing what my mistakes were in the past and this video reminding me of those mistakes, I can say I'm improving and I'm getting better everyday! And before I just had 5 followers because I didn't have any idea what I was doing wrong but now I'm at almost 300 followers and counting and I am proud to say that all those came from me correcting my mistakes. Thanks Gael for reminding me through this video to never make those mistakes again❤️

OMG all of this SO true. My first stream NIGHTMARE city! lol I think it's healthy to have the mindset that your channel will grow as you do in the fact that the more you do this the better you will get at it. I talk to everyone in my stream as if I were chatting with my friends, I find that people like that. I also don't censor myself. I make mistakes or say something weird or dumb we all laugh about it. Even if no one is watching I STILL talk like there are people there, because you never know someone may pop in and leave if you are just being silent. I think interaction is key, and I have actually had to leave smaller streams because they just won't talk, they focus on the game and don't talk. ALWAYS keep talking, never stop. I had no messages, no starting screens, no intermission stuff, NOTHING. Because I was just figuring stuff out as I go and don't be afraid to change things up either. I now have an animated starting soon screen I made myself directly in OBS with PS and had I knew it was that simple, I would have made one ages ago lol. But hey we all have to start somewhere! Good luck everyone with your channels!
Had a blue yeti, and the cable was shoddy. Regret it, but also it helped get me into the streaming game. Upgraded to a HyperX after seeing it at a local store and knew it would be amazing. The failure of the Yeti helped me realize what I wanted in a mic and I am thankful for that experience. Still a small streamer, but am enjoying the experience and look forward to growing!
Only thing is I have to close my eyes when they start blinking.. too distracting/feels almost kinda like an epilepsy risk ;_; They're beautiful though!

It's so weird cause everyone says nobody comes for your gameplay unless your a pro. I've some how found a way to balance that cause I'm a cod sniper so people come to my stream to see me hit clips. I've found this nice balance of trying to hit clips and drop 50 kill sniper games along with reading every single chat line as soon as it gets dropped. If your doing really good just do quick checks. If nothing is happening glance at chat. You can hold a really good game and gameplay and still balance chat. And narrate your thoughts and what your about to do. Dont stop talking, keep it going, over explain everything like if someone asks your favorite game, say what it is and then say why you like it why you dont and why you like it over similar games

Pretty much everything here boils down to: focus on making good content that people will want to watch. Its a shame that needs to be said so much. I'm thinking about streaming just for fun (I'm playing anyway, why not make it social?) and your channel has been super helpful to this total newbie, so thanks :)
Here's a piece of advice for the community part. Get in communities where you are tight with a lot of the people in there. Get to know people and go into other people's streams and meet as many new people as possible and get to know them. Trust me, when you're a small streamer. It is almost impossible to grow on Twitch. Be an amazing supporter of other people's streams and trust me. It will come back to you man. Getting to know people is 100% key. I have met so many amazing people through this and it has overall improved my stream and made me a better streamer due to this.

This was really helpful to hear, especially the part with that you are allowed to ban trolls, because that was the trap I fell in when I gave twitch a go. Still feel more comfortable making videos for RUclips, but really want to give twitch another go later on, when I do feel more ready. (not talking about luxury, just my language barrier that made it way too uncomfortable and gave the “Chores” feel 😅)

11:48 So true, the blue yeti sucks it does not have an out of the box experience you gotta set it up correctly and even than its bad. No matter if it is in cardiod or not, its wire tap, you can hear people whispering in the other room.
I gotta question. What do you think about VODS being only available for subscribers? Should only big streamers do that? I still find it a bit annoying cause I like looking through the VODs.

I will have a few questions at the end of this book I wrote ;b [in summary, I'm just agreeing with you]: I appreciate these tips! I have already utilized the one pertaining to camera shapes from one of your other videos (the heart, which was so cool!, thanks!). These tips couldn't be more on point. I will say I did fall into the perfectionist trap at first. However, I actually think it's really cool to see that progression. My second video had sh*tty audio for the first hour and I had no idea. My most recent video I finally figured out how to get the chatbox to show up in stream (thanks to a comment on another video). I am still learning about vods. However, I do agree strongly with getting your setup ready before your scheduled to go LIVE. Don't underestimate how long that could take. I used to allow 5-10 minutes, thinking that was enough. But, waiting for OBS to load up, close out of unneeded tabs, grab that drink and snack(s), get your party ready if you're playing with others, etc., sometimes takes longer than you think. Personally, I'd rather start a video later in the evening and be ON TIME than to rush starting and not being fully ready. I saw a 'follower' with 1k followers but I was his only viewer, seemed suspicious to me. I have seen plenty of people with, as you said, $1000+ setups but the content isn't there. I wouldn't say that I am much of an entertainer in terms of loudness/crazy stories to tell (the main ones you hear about); but I am a friend, I listen to people vent, offer advice when asked for it, we talk serious real life sh*t, mental health a lot. Basically, my twitch is an unlicensed (but plenty of xp) counselor :b. I have had people, no exaggeration, hit me up 10 years later and tell me just because I talked to them in this one game of H3, I helped him lessen his thoughts on su1c1de. I helped him with his relationship problems (advised him to make her feel valuable just like you do the game you're playin', granted we were like 16, still learnin the obvious stuff). I had a follower/friend refuse to remove his friend on xbl who he knows ddos people, myself being one of them, solely because he didn't want to lose a follower. Well, he still ended up losing a follower. I'd rather only have 20 followers and have them all be decent human beings than to have 100 with at least 1 being toxic , not worth it. Like " Xironium" said down below, if you do decide to have a schedule, I do recommend taking a couple days off, at least one (especially if you have other responsibilities, like kids, a non-streaming partner, your best friend, hygiene lol, etc.). I will admit, I underestimated how long editing takes (granted, doesn't help that most of my videos are 5 hours long ;b). The main reason I finally decided to tell my anxiety to f off and to give twitch a try was because so many times something hilarious happens and/or is said in game and there's no audio to record it (at least for xbox). It will record the gameplay but not the people talking. I have a clip from before twitch where me and 2 friends were playin ODST firefight. My left trigger (grenades) sticks sometimes. Well, I threw 3 of em, killed my friend Christian and hurt me and my friend Munroe. Then, I walked over Christian's dead body like an idiot and threw his 3 grenades, killing me and Munroe. The clip makes it look like I am just this a-hole teammate intentionally trying to waste our lives. But the reality was it was 100% an accident and we were belly-laughing. Even the 4th random found it funny. Stuff like that I'd watch over and over because it was genuine, it was funny, and everyone was having a good time. There are going to be days where the stream is going to be quieter, maybe you're sad and want to take it easy. Tell the stream that. You don't have to go into detail if you don't want to but I've learned that most people are actually very understanding when it comes to mental health importance, least the online community. On the topic of viewer acknowledgement, I tend to respond out loud. When is it better to respond in chat/typing instead though? For people who struggle with camera shyness (ALWAYS been that way), any tips for that? Right now, I use a teddy bear lol. Ideally, I would like to be on camera, even as poor quality as it is. I know the importance of that connection and personalization. Any advice with those who stream and are single parents, especially now that kids are home 24/7? "When I say dude, it's genderless" lol, love that.
My first stream was so bad with multiple technical difficulties and Ive gotten sort of discouraged. Now Im becoming the perfectionist you described buying new stuff to have a better quality stream. Help me! lol

I will have a few questions at the end of this book I wrote ;b [in summary, I'm just agreeing with you]:
I appreciate these tips! I have already utilized the one pertaining to camera shapes from one of your other videos (the heart, which was so cool!, thanks!). These tips couldn't be more on point. I will say I did fall into the perfectionist trap at first. However, I actually think it's really cool to see that progression. My second video had sh*tty audio for the first hour and I had no idea. My most recent video I finally figured out how to get the chatbox to show up in stream (thanks to a comment on another video). I am still learning about vods. However, I do agree strongly with getting your setup ready before your scheduled to go LIVE. Don't underestimate how long that could take. I used to allow 5-10 minutes, thinking that was enough. But, waiting for OBS to load up, close out of unneeded tabs, grab that drink and snack(s), get your party ready if you're playing with others, etc., sometimes takes longer than you think. Personally, I'd rather start a video later in the evening and be ON TIME than to rush starting and not being fully ready.
I saw a 'follower' with 1k followers but I was his only viewer, seemed suspicious to me. I have seen plenty of people with, as you said, $1000+ setups but the content isn't there. I wouldn't say that I am much of an entertainer in terms of loudness/crazy stories to tell (the main ones you hear about); but I am a friend, I listen to people vent, offer advice when asked for it, we talk serious real life sh*t, mental health a lot. Basically, my twitch is an unlicensed (but plenty of xp) counselor :b. I have had people, no exaggeration, hit me up 10 years later and tell me just because I talked to them in this one game of H3, I helped him lessen his thoughts on su1c1de. I helped him with his relationship problems (advised him to make her feel valuable just like you do the game you're playin', granted we were like 16, still learnin the obvious stuff).
I had a follower/friend refuse to remove his friend on xbl who he knows ddos people, myself being one of them, solely because he didn't want to lose a follower. Well, he still ended up losing a follower. I'd rather only have 20 followers and have them all be decent human beings than to have 100 with at least 1 being toxic , not worth it.

Xironium" said down below, if you do decide to have a schedule, I do recommend taking a couple days off, at least one (especially if you have other responsibilities, like kids, a non-streaming partner, your best friend, hygiene lol, etc.). I will admit, I underestimated how long editing takes (granted, doesn't help that most of my videos are 5 hours long ;b).
The main reason I finally decided to tell my anxiety to f off and to give twitch a try was because so many times something hilarious happens and/or is said in game and there's no audio to record it (at least for xbox). It will record the gameplay but not the people talking. I have a clip from before twitch where me and 2 friends were playin ODST firefight. My left trigger (grenades) sticks sometimes. Well, I threw 3 of em, killed my friend Christian and hurt me and my friend Munroe. Then, I walked over Christian's dead body like an idiot and threw his 3 grenades, killing me and Munroe. The clip makes it look like I am just this a-hole teammate intentionally trying to waste our lives. But the reality was it was 100% an accident and we were belly-laughing. Even the 4th random found it funny. Stuff like that I'd watch over and over because it was genuine, it was funny, and everyone was having a good time. There are going to be days where the stream is going to be quieter, maybe you're sad and want to take it easy. Tell the stream that. You don't have to go into detail if you don't want to but I've learned that most people are actually very understanding when it comes to mental health importance, least the online community.
On the topic of viewer acknowledgement, I tend to respond out loud. When is it better to respond in chat/typing instead though?
For people who struggle with camera shyness (ALWAYS been that way), any tips for that? Right now, I use a teddy bear lol. Ideally, I would like to be on camera, even as poor quality as it is. I know the importance of that connection and personalization.
Any advice with those who stream and are single parents, especially now that kids are home 24/7?
