Best.JC. Ever! Saw this live twice.... John always works so hard, the band were as awesome as usual... whole cast were brilliant. Thanks !! Maybe one of the lighter songs from JCS would be helpful....so 'Everythings Alright' with the ensemble starring John, Jon Stevens (Judas) and Kate Ceberano (Mary Mag) would be a good one for you.

As I work through your rabbit hole, I keep finding gems like this. I saw this production, and remember feeling utterly wrung out emotionally by the end. You're at a disadvantage not having seen a production of JC Superstar, because you haven't seen this number in context. It's a powerful musical, one best watched live in a theatre; the movie doesn't do it justice. I'm sure that, like other iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, it will continue to be presented live. I strongly recommend you go see it, and prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster.❤

You will never hear a better and more passionate performance of that song. The vocal range and the notes that he hits are technically sublime. You have to appreciate the technique needed, his delivery and how much skill is needed to sing this song in this way. Barnsey is great - don’t get me wrong. Love him, but for pure skill, tone, technique, range, ability etc. JF is out on his own.

This would be my favourite vocal from John. That song is incredibly hard to sing properly, and from all the people who have played that role, john is by far the best. Most get quite screechy in places. John holds the high notes without losing control in a way nobody else can.

Gethsemane is the garden where Jesus went to pray to God. It's referred to as 'The agony in the garden' because Jesus knew what was going to happen. Set to music this for me was the best performance of that role from John Farnham. I saw the stage version of this many times...but not this one as it was a 'new' thing to put it 'in the round' so no staging .... Personally I can't help but be moved by John's performance... literally makes me weep. His anguish, fear and sadness is so amazing. Sorry you didn't 'get moved' but let me say I still enjoyed it. Love your sound and you've managed to give us a clear video.

Some background for you: JC Superstar is based on the Gospel of Matthew. Gethsemane was when he was waiting in the garden waiting for the Roman soldiers to come and arrest him starting his Passion, which is what Easter is about.

There is a recommendation I have that will be well worth your time. Tom Jones and John Farnham were friends and gave an impromptu performance of 'My Yidisha Momma' on an Australian TV show Hey Hey Its Saturday. It is right there on YT. So successful was it that years later when John and Tom were much older, Tom invited John to sing it again with him at his Australian Concert. Both versions will appear when you search YT.

So you see from my point of view, it doesn't matter what John Farnham sings he could sing the yellow pages from a telephone book and it would still sound good because he's got such a good voice ,mostly because he sings with passion, having feeling beyond the lyrics is a winning recipe, and he does that well.
Not a criticism, but he really has mastered his craft.

I’m glad you liked our John. I hope you get to see the whole musical sometime. This scene was after the apostles had fallen asleep and Jesus (John) talks to his father (God) about what lies ahead for him. He’s talking in the garden of Gethsemane while he waits to be arrested by the soldiers who will later crucify him. I just want to let you know that you are pronouncing Gethsemane incorrectly. It’s Geth-sem-man-ee, I think that’s the easiest way to say it. Of course, as you say it quickly, the 2 ms come together and so do the 2 ees. I hope that helps a little. Keep enjoying the reviews of great artists. Cheers from Australia ❤️❤️🐨❤️❤️

I absolutely love this song and I went to Jesus Christ Superstar twice in Melbourne, but if I want to listen to it I’ve gotta admit I prefer the studio version. Particularly for this song, but really for all of them. I think that’s mostly because I know the timings on the studio version so well and can sing along, but when I sing with this one I don’t get it right. Of course listening to it more often would solve that problem, but I’m old and grumpy now and set in my ways 😂😂
I do think that if you don’t have the context and the story, this song would be difficult to connect with. Not sure if anyone else has explained or how well you know the timeline of things, but this is after the Last Supper. Judas has left to betray him. All the disciples have fallen asleep. Jesus is praying in the Garden of Gethsemane (Geth-sem-any). He knows what is about to happen and he is afraid and has doubts, but ends up surrendering to God’s will. The next song starts with Judas betraying him with a kiss.

This play has been performed all over the world with incredible megastars performing the role of Jesus The music is a bit different if you not into that sort of thing. And the songs very difficult to perform as the range is extreme. Most other ,male performers have to change up into falsetto to hit those higher notes.. . ...Just to put it into perspective John legend was supposed to be americas pick for the best performance of Jesus. But his range is limited. I recon JF kills in this performance. He can hit all the notes in his regular voice ...one of very few that i have ever heard. So just as an example of pure vocal range, emotion and talent here is a cool comparison.
