I’m an American working for one of the top chinese EV companies in China. For years Chinese consumers would buy imported cars from other countries with a 30-40% tariff because they didn’t trust nor like homemade vehicles. That was until the government pushed and incentivized manufacturers to improve quality and design of their cars to get the consumers to buy home made. If the US wants to win this war the government has to be serious and apply the same strategies to help manufactures to improve quality and cost. We can’t rely on American companies to do that on their own, they are far too greedy and accustomed to high payouts. All the major US car manufacturers are so used to bullying the consumers by dropping quality year over year and increasing prices to what it used be standard is disgusting. American companies ripping off American people. The moral of the story is that the Chinese EV industry is strong because it has a strong government that supports the industry. I invite anyone to come to China and just test any of the evs here and chat with their sales people. You’d be blown away all the incentives the government gives to help buyers choose a home made vehicle.

I worked in Canada and drove many US made cars. To be frank, they were atrocious. Now the Chinese have arrived with top quality ev's and the US car makers have freaked out and told their stooges in government to essentially ban them. This all speaks for itself really. Fair competition is unfair as far as the US is concerned.
With the arrival of Chinese made, the local produced cars have to improve its quality and standard, and that eat into their profit. That's against what the US manufacturers want.

I am an Indonesian. I used to drive Lexus ES300h. Three months ago, I switched to BYD Seal Performance. Guess what. I never drove my Lexus (it is still in my garage) again since I prefer to drive my BYD Seal. Its entertainment screen is amazing. I can watch videos when waiting for my wife buying groceries in an airconditioned car without worrying of CO intoxication.
@myhome772 China imposes an import tariff of about 15% on complete vehicles from Western countries, unless it's a high-emission vehicle, which, according to the Western emphasis on green initiatives, should be phased out anyway. However, the U.S. imposes a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs.

@@Robbert_nl Of course it is not all about the environment. The point is to act for the environment *and* the industry, and it is the case with EVs replacing ICE cars. And it is not just cars, China is investing in trains, solar, battery, etc. The goal is not to return to stone age but to develop a sustainable economy. BTW, I own an EV (US made, while I am French), but on a daily basis I am going to work with public transportation, as my wife and my children. And building a wide and reliable public transportation is also a huge industry. And EVs are not just good to fight climate change, but also pollution, and pollution costs a lot to EU and China. And honestly, I do not know any brand in the US or EU protesting about tariff, or just to avoid repercussions from China where they try to sell cars, but at the same time they are lobbying for tariffs. The only exception is probably Tesla.

They have been forced to lower prices by 20-30% but still sales is dropping drastically. Chinese EVs make 50% of the cars sold atm and increasing. Don’t be lazy , go read more before making stupid comments.
More than a decade ago, people knew that fuel vehicles would be eliminated. Japan has a huge amount of government subsidies for new energy research and development every year, but unfortunately, the Japanese made a wrong bet, they chose hydrogen energy. And the US government has a VERY VERY VERY VERY slow response in thinking of the future. Now, they just resist change with shameful trade protectionism, absolutely shameful!!!

Yes, and it is probably why Tesla was not in the picture. The issue is not about US EV industry, but about legacy automakers making money with big ICE SUV and big ICE trucks rather than investing all on the only possible future. BTW, hybrids and PHEVs are ICE vehicles, so more and more investments on the wrong technology. And Tesla can definitively make a quite cheaper version of the model 3, will less margins, more "hard plastics", lower performances and so narrower tires and smaller brakes, etc. But legacy automakers make more money on big vehicles, sold with credits over decades !

They sell cars made in China, not a single car was imported from USA. If China set up factories within US then tariffs would be 0% but the price would not be so attractive any more.
chinese government release EV development plan in 2004, even before tesla release their first car. the goal is to reduce pollution in china. all EV producers received subsidy, even tesla. now, roughly 100 EV car brand are competing each other to stay afloat. just for scale, BYD (the biggest) employing 90k engineers. catl (biggest battery manufacturer) have 18k engineers.

Due to the China tariffs, U.S. legacy automakers can focus more heavily on producing internal combustion engine vehicles. US will be at least a decade behind China in EV adoption and innovation.

@myhome772 Renewables are one of the biggest wastes of money in our lifetime. Solar and wind produce a relatively small amount of energy for a very large cost. The best would be to produce energy with nuclear power, if we are really serious. Electric vehicles and all the wind and solar to power them will cost us trillions, and we will go broke trying to pay for renewables and all the government subsidies needed to pay for them. If you think inflation was bad in the last few years, wait until we are forced to move everything with EVs. Get ready for massive shortages of everything, and prices through the roof.

Ford and GM were too slow in adopting EV's and instead focus on making large $60,000 SUV EV's and expensive electric Ford Lightning pickup trucks because they make more profit on larger vehicles. Ford and GM could care less about making affordable electric cars for the masses. So, I say allow affordable Chinese EV's from companies like BYD to sell their EV's in the US. If Ford and GM go out of business because they can't compete, it's their fault.
Ford practically stopped building cars. But China can sell cars in the US. Just build them in US factories. Why should the US not apply the same rules China applies? Come to USA, build factory, joint venture, tech transfer. What’s wrong with that?

Why no mention about "how" the tariffs against Japanese cars failed in the early 80's. Even the arch conservative Reagan pulled the tariff when he saw US auto weren't adapting, they were just wind falling the opportunity.
There's a more interesting example in cleantech: Obama's solar panel tariffs. At the time the US had roughly half the market share of solar-grade polysilicon (the processed material solar cells are made of), but China was starting to dominate solar panel manufacture, so the US imposed tariffs of more than 250% on Chinese solar panels; not only this completely failed in jumpstarting the US solar panel industry, China imposed counter-tariffs on US polysilicon that decimated US production, so now China controls close to 90% of the solar-grade polysilicon production.
230B over 10 years also includes investments by the car companies themselves and consumer incentives , not just manufacturers subsidies (US call those funding, tax breaks, inflation-reduction act etc). Don't be disingenuous, DW.
You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the rules for this credit for vehicles purchased from 2023 to 2032.
China can sell unsubsidized EVs to the US, Canada and EU and compete on quality and nil carbon emissions. All other countries will enjoy subsidized. EVs. What about the US$119 billion in tax breaks US govt gave to local EV producers just a few months ago. For all intents and purposes a tax break is technically a subsidy.

US can't compete because their number one concern is paying out Corporate Bonuses or dividends to shareholders. Companies first used stocks/shares as a way of raising funds to improve and grow a company that made something to sell to the consumer. Stocks/shares are for trading to artificially raise the share prices at certain dates that correspond to Corporate Bonus evaluation time. The US and many western countries have economies that are based on F.I.R.E. ie Finance, Insurance, Real Estate. It is all generated by key strokes and not by actually producing a tangible product. US GDP is a distortion when an increase in share prices are counted as growth or the increase in premiums for insurance policies is added into GDP growth.
US is lagging behind China in many aspects including high speed rail, 5G going to be 6G, solar panels etc. etc. But instead of cooperating with China, US arrogant but gullible political leaders chose to be antagonistic and banning exports of high-end electronic chips and instruct Dutch company ASML not to sell its EVD machines nor doing any after sales services to China, much to the detriment of US and Dutch cooperations. When China is able to produce her own chips and EVD machines which are for sure, Western cooperations shall blame and curse stupid US policy similar to ordering them pulling out of Russian market at the start of Ukraine war.

Not a single Chinese domestic car manufacturer has taken the initiative to officially sell their cars in the US. 102.5% tax on Chinese EVs， Go ahead. That must “hurt” China a lot. The US is not the center of the world. 30 094 767 new cars were sold in China in 2023 ( 8.1 million of them were electric vehicles ) , meanwhile only 15 604 278 new cars were sold in the usa (1.4 million were EVs). The US is expected to subsidize Tesla with $34 billion between 2023 and 2030. This isn’t even including the other subsidies that Tesla is going to receive from previous policies. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has subsidized BYD between 2018 and 2022 with the whopping “massive amount” of $ 3.7 billion. So the American company got subsidized 10 times more than the Chinese company, out of the $119 billion in battery subsidies GM got about $21 billion, the truth is the US regime is subsidizing their electric vehicles way more than China is. On November 30, 2023 GM announced record $10 billion stock buyback, more than it’s spending on UAW raises- as its electrification push stalls (Source Bloomberg). That share buyback from General Motors was just q4 of 2023, $10 billion, they get $20 billion in subsidies and they spend $10 billion giving that money back to shareholders. The money isn’t going to innovation like it should, the money seems to go these bloated bureaucratic corporations where they take the money give it to shareholders or give it to executive bonuses or management teams that don’t know how to build a car, get so complicated convoluted they just can’t do business competitively anymore. They don’t need to, instead of being forced to be competitive, being forced to actually spend the money on R&D and producing a high-quality product, they just put a 102.5% tariff on anybody that they cannot compete. What’s going in the US. A lot of money is tied to gas production. A lot of congressman take lobby money from gas companies. Most of the other countries in the world are embracing the EV market. We are not. If we don’t start to embrace EV production the US will decline further!!

Nightfall over America is happening now. Started with the Plaza accord signing in NYC between Japan and Detroit automobile industry. It’s been down hill ever since! Actually the down slide started when Nixon decided to take the US dollar off the gold standard in 1972 and then refuse to give France and Germany back it’s gold in due order! The dollar’s value today is less than 10% of what it was back in 1972!
Charging on the road is no longer an issue with the latest BYD using a small gasoline engine dedicated to battery charging. BYD demonstrated 2,100 km of range using a full tank of gasoline and fully charged battery.
That is just a stopgap measure until charging infrastructure catches up. A BEV is safer, quieter, and cleaner than a PHEV, even those that (like BYD's) are more like an EV with a generator than a regular hybrid, and within a couple years should also become cheaper to make (because battery prices are still falling).
Chinese lower EV prices are not simply just govt support, but also NOT having to pay enormous profits to shareholders. This is a hidden cost factor on many expensive products, including iPhones.
American's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs is very short sighted. This action actually harms mass EV adoption and EV development in the US while benefitting the petroleum interests. The smart way to protect the US domestic auto industry is to figure out a way to use the growth of the EV market to fund the transition of the US auto industry away from the ICE age. The most efficient way to do this could involve imposing a special sales tax on imported Chinese EVs (i.e. 15% ~ 20%) and use this money to fund domestic auto manufacturers. A lot of imported Chinese EVs could be sold even with a special 20% sales tax on top of them. This could generate a huge pool of fund for the US government to fund Ford and GM's transition to EVs. At 100% tariff, not a single Chinese EV will be sold therefore the US government wouldn't get a single penny which means zero funding for Ford and GM.
Back in the 2000s the Chinese knew they couldn't beat the Germans or Yanks with combustion engines design, but they also had the foresight (and lack of political clown circuses) to see that their strengths and the future relied on electronic and battery engineering.
China needed to reduce air pollution from exhaust pipes of petrol and diesel engined cars and acknowledged that it was far behind in developing it,s own internal combustion engines .It decided to move to what it saw as the next best solution ie development of battery tech and electric motors. The govt did meet and inform all legacy automakers back in 2004 that it was moving in that direction, so they had plenty of time to do so to meet the competition. Instead they rested on their laurels thinking that Chinese companies would not be able to do so. Now they act shocked as if it was sprung on them out of the blue. They deserve to lose market share because if the US govt did not protect them consumers would vote with their wallets and put legacy auto out of business anyway.
The Paris Climate Agreement has brought tremendous pressure to China's development of the electric vehicle industry. In order to stimulate the competition mechanism in the electric vehicle market, China invited Tesla to build a super factory in Shanghai. Tesla's success in China has driven the innovation of many electric vehicle manufacturers, but many joint ventures, such as Shanghai GM, Shanghai Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda, etc., have lost market share because they have not kept up with the transformation of electric vehicles. Enterprises survive in competition and perish in comfort. Only the fittest survive.
The answer why is simple... China must import all oil, but can generate electricity from wind and solar , green and less dependable on foreign partners
US EV vehicles are also government subsidized, you get tax breaks for buying US made EVs, so spare us the BS that Chinese vehicles are the only ones that are government subsidized.
Not many years from now, the China will dominate commercial planes as well, the Chinese already dominate the ship building in term of number of ships they have been built.

The real problem for US and Europe are that they can't sell their cars in China anymore, Chinese now have better and cheaper alternative. BTW, 50 years ago, US were facing the cheaper Japanese car competition, how can the US auto industries still facing the same competition from China?
It was my understanding that the tariffs were designed to prohibit the importing of Chinese vehicles from mainland China to America, but it does not prevent a Chinese automaker from setting up manufacturing in Mexico or North America and selling their cars to US citizens! Also they are not completely banned from selling in the US because the Buick Envision, Lincoln Nautilus, Volvo S90 and Polestar 2 are Chinese made models that are sold in the US.
Government subsidies to the EV industry is probably just another excuse. The US government can also subsidize its own EV industry to make it more competitive if it's so concerned with protecting the environment. But rather doing that the US prefers to put all their "investments" in the sale of military hardware which only causes death and destruction to other countries. It all comes down to PROFITS for the big corporations and staying # 1 in the world. Talk is cheap when it comes to protecting the environment and doing what's best for the PEOPLE. It's so sad! 😭😭
I'm in the UK and live near a town with many car parks. Only one of the car parks has 4 ev charging stations (car park has 1500 spaces). None of the EV chargers work.
China has over a hundred auto companies. The US has about a half dozen. That tells you all you need to know about why Chinese prices are low and quality is high.
There is no Chinese car certified in US, tariff is nothing but political propaganda. Chinese EV is only 2% in EU, the tariff is also political motivated. Big Chinese EV market is in ASEAN Australia New Zealand South America and Mexico.

Remove the tariffs and you will likely see quite a few Chinese cars entering the US market in short order; keep the tariffs but remove the political pressure and you will see Chinese brands open factories in Mexico to make there not just the cars, but enough of its parts to qualify as a fully made-in-Mexico car under the free trade agreement.

I drove a BYD EV in Thailand and the quality and performance was excellent, plus loads less expensive than any of the EVs based out of the USA. I would avoid EVs in the USA, but here in SE Asia where it never gets cold and electricity rates are low, they work.

I’m an American working for one of the top chinese EV companies in China. For years Chinese consumers would buy imported cars from other countries with a 30-40% tariff because they didn’t trust nor like homemade vehicles. That was until the government pushed and incentivized manufacturers to improve quality and design of their cars to get the consumers to buy home made. If the US wants to win this war the government has to be serious and apply the same strategies to help manufactures to improve quality and cost. We can’t rely on American companies to do that on their own, they are far too greedy and accustomed to high payouts. All the major US car manufacturers are so used to bullying the consumers by dropping quality year over year and increasing prices to what it used be standard is disgusting. American companies ripping off American people. The moral of the story is that the Chinese EV industry is strong because it has a strong government that supports the industry. I invite anyone to come to China and just test any of the evs here and chat with their sales people. You’d be blown away all the incentives the government gives to help buyers choose a home made vehicle.

I never drove my Lexus (it is still in my garage) again since I prefer to drive my BYD Seal. Its entertainment screen is amazing. The car manufacturers don't want a car that is low maintenance. They also don't want anything that will force prices to go down.
Yes, and it is probably why Tesla was not in the picture. The issue is not about US EV industry, but about legacy automakers making money with big ICE SUV and big ICE trucks rather than investing all on the only possible future. BTW, hybrids and PHEVs are ICE vehicles, so more and more investments on the wrong technology. And Tesla can definitively make a quite cheaper version of the model 3, will less margins, more "hard plastics", lower performances and so narrower tires and smaller brakes, etc. But legacy automakers make more money on big vehicles, sold with credits over decades !

At the time the US had roughly half the market share of solar-grade polysilicon (the processed material solar cells are made of), but China was starting to dominate solar panel manufacture, so the US imposed tariffs of more than 250% on Chinese solar panels; not only this completely failed in jumpstarting the US solar panel industry, China imposed counter-tariffs on US polysilicon that decimated US production, so now China controls close to 90% of the solar-grade polysilicon production.

Companies first used stocks/shares as a way of raising funds to improve and grow a company that made something to sell to the consumer. Stocks/shares are for trading to artificially raise the share prices at certain dates that correspond to Corporate Bonus evaluation time. The US and many western countries have economies that are based on F.I.R.E. ie Finance, Insurance, Real Estate. It is all generated by key strokes and not by actually producing a tangible product. US GDP is a distortion when an increase in share prices are counted as growth or the increase in premiums for insurance policies is added into GDP growth.

The US is not the center of the world. 30 094 767 new cars were sold in China in 2023 ( 8.1 million of them were electric vehicles ) , meanwhile only 15 604 278 new cars were sold in the usa (1.4 million were EVs).
The US is expected to subsidize Tesla with $34 billion between 2023 and 2030. This isn’t even including the other subsidies that Tesla is going to receive from previous policies. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has subsidized BYD between 2018 and 2022 with the whopping “massive amount” of $ 3.7 billion.
So the American company got subsidized 10 times more than the Chinese company, out of the $119 billion in battery subsidies GM got about $21 billion, the truth is the US regime is subsidizing their electric vehicles way more than China is.
On November 30, 2023 GM announced record $10 billion stock buyback, more than it’s spending on UAW raises- as its electrification push stalls (Source Bloomberg). That share buyback from General Motors was just q4 of 2023, $10 billion, they get $20 billion in subsidies and they spend $10 billion giving that money back to shareholders. The money isn’t going to innovation like it should, the money seems to go these bloated bureaucratic corporations where they take the money give it to shareholders or give it to executive bonuses or management teams that don’t know how to build a car, get so complicated convoluted they just can’t do business competitively anymore.
They don’t need to, instead of being forced to be competitive, being forced to actually spend the money on R&D and producing a high-quality product, they just put a 102.5% tariff on anybody that they cannot compete.

Charging on the road is no longer an issue with the latest BYD using a small gasoline engine dedicated to battery charging. BYD demonstrated 2,100 km of range using a full tank of gasoline and fully charged battery.
That is just a stopgap measure until charging infrastructure catches up. A BEV is safer, quieter, and cleaner than a PHEV, even those that (like BYD's) are more like an EV with a generator than a regular hybrid, and within a couple years should also become cheaper to make (because battery prices are still falling).

American's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs is very short sighted. This action actually harms mass EV adoption and EV development in the US while benefitting the petroleum interests. The smart way to protect the US domestic auto industry is to figure out a way to use the growth of the EV market to fund the transition of the US auto industry away from the ICE age. The most efficient way to do this could involve imposing a special sales tax on imported Chinese EVs (i.e. 15% ~ 20%) and use this money to fund domestic auto manufacturers. A lot of imported Chinese EVs could be sold even with a special 20% sales tax on top of them. This could generate a huge pool of fund for the US government to fund Ford and GM's transition to EVs. At 100% tariff, not a single Chinese EV will be sold therefore the US government wouldn't get a single penny which means zero funding for Ford and GM.

Back in the 2000s the Chinese knew they couldn't beat the Germans or Yanks with combustion engines design, but they also had the foresight (and lack of political clown circuses) to see that their strengths and the future relied on electronic and battery engineering.
China needed to reduce air pollution from exhaust pipes of petrol and diesel engined cars and acknowledged that it was far behind in developing it,s own internal combustion engines .It decided to move to what it saw as the next best solution ie development of battery tech and electric motors. The govt did meet and inform all legacy automakers back in 2004 that it was moving in that direction, so they had plenty of time to do so to meet the competition. Instead they rested on their laurels thinking that Chinese companies would not be able to do so. Now they act shocked as if it was sprung on them out of the blue. They deserve to lose market share because if the US govt did not protect them consumers would vote with their wallets and put legacy auto out of business anyway.

It was my understanding that the tariffs were designed to prohibit the importing of Chinese vehicles from mainland China to America, but it does not prevent a Chinese automaker from setting up manufacturing in Mexico or North America and selling their cars to US citizens! Also they are not completely banned from selling in the US because the Buick Envision, Lincoln Nautilus, Volvo S90 and Polestar 2 are Chinese made models that are sold in the US.

Government subsidies to the EV industry is probably just another excuse. The US government can also subsidize its own EV industry to make it more competitive if it's so concerned with protecting the environment. But rather doing that the US prefers to put all their "investments" in the sale of military hardware which only causes death and destruction to other countries. I'm in the UK and live near a town with many car parks. Only one of the car parks has 4 ev charging stations (car park has 1500 spaces). None of the EV chargers work.

There is no Chinese car certified in US, tariff is nothing but political propaganda. Chinese EV is only 2% in EU, the tariff is also political motivated. Big Chinese EV market is in ASEAN Australia New Zealand South America and Mexico.
Also most other Asian countries (BYD even has a factory in Uzbekistan), Central America (Costa Rica, for example, has 25% EV market share, almost all of which are Chinese cars), Africa (Ethiopia banned the import of ICE cars, so almost all new cars are either Chinese or made locally with Chinese parts), and the Middle East (both Israel and the Arab countries have China as the main supplier of EVs). Essentially most EVs are either from Chinese brands or else made in China everywhere except the US, Canada, Europe, Japan (tiny electric Kei cars from Japanese automakers dominate the EV market there), and South Korea (though a third of EVs sold in South Korea are already Made-in-China).
And the absence of Chinese EVs certified for sale in the US is mostly due to the tariffs and political pressure. Remove the tariffs and you will likely see quite a few Chinese cars entering the US market in short order; keep the tariffs but remove the political pressure and you will see Chinese brands open factories in Mexico to make there not just the cars, but enough of its parts to qualify as a fully made-in-Mexico car under the free trade agreement.
in the end the consumer is the one who has to pay the tariff to get a car, not China.

I drove a BYD EV in Thailand and the quality and performance was excellent, plus loads less expensive than any of the EVs based out of the USA.

I live in California, and i see people trading ev for gas and hybrids. Tesla isnt selling well anymore. We have high electric cost in some areas. Charging is a big inconvenience. Hot climate is killing range. Battery replacement cost is scaring people from buying used ev.
