WWII-Era Color Footage of Exeter, England (c. 1944)

  • This was taken in 1944 by a U.S. Navy photographer while he was based in Exeter late in the war.

    All footage is of the Countess wear area..cottage is on glasshouse Lane,looking out over to the sewage works..the house looks as if its on Topsham Road.. think its still there..roundabout is countess wear roundabout and River scene is of River exe at countess wear on exe Bridge!

      Thanks for confirming that. I thought it was the Countess Wear roundabout.

    Thankyou for sharing this footage. Nice old cottages. I wonder if the shots of the cattle were for comparison with American cattle?

    Was the American flag where st Peters school is now? I'm sure my Grandad said there was a base there.

      Topsham road just the other side of Countesswear roundabout on the left side going towards Topsham, was an American supply depot.

      The American flag was probably the site of the navy stores just off Topsham road in Countess Wear. A note of interest is that the father of seventies family band The Osmands, was stationed there during the war.
