I can totally relate to Sorin. It's frustrating when manufacturers deliberately make electronics difficult to repair. Their design choices often discourage the end users from attempting repairs and force them to buy new products, even for minor issues like the one shown in this video.

Yup they make sure that when one part goes it bricks. I reused the battery packs from 3 of these in 3s3p configuration with an aftermarket BMS and shoved them in an old Stanley Jumpstart housing. Can give short term sustained current of 750A, but realistically only about 75 to 120A impulse and 30A sustained is actually needed to crank the engine. ❤

I have tested a few of those boosters, on analogue resistive load testers and yes, the expensive premium brand booster packs CAN output 2000a+. How useful that number is, well... Usually, to hit the rated current, the voltage will drop to around, or just below 9v,. The current will also drop fast so they will only do the rated current for about a second. So, in practice the lithium based boosters, are a ""one shot" type deal, if the car doesn't start when you crank it the first time, they will usually not have the snot to crank a second time. (I'm talking cold weather, -20c and below) There are several youtube videos where they measure the current from similar booster packs, and they pack a surprising amount of energy. They are also very good at frying electronics, especially if you use them wrong. IF you have a bad connection, OR you connect it to the car when the leads are live, the spark will be several KV and fry your control modules. They tend to fry the charging circuits on cars with battery management circuitry. If you have a bad connection, and a completely flat battery, moving the clamp, can be enough to generate an insane voltage spike.

    • @GregM
      @GregM 10 месяцев назад +1

Yup ProjectFarm tested these battery boosters recently. This particular unit is $276 CDN. Some units can boost semi tractors or tractors. Winters here in Canada can get down to -40c or lower so those temperatures can tax weak batteries.

“I got something better for you!”
I sent him out with this booster to use on his car and he came back in 5 minutes later. “I need that link right now,” he said and ordered them for his daughters, son, and wife.

My old lithium jumper just saved me a 2nd time a few days ago, paying for the purchase of a HOMPOW (6000A) unit highly reviewed by Project Farm - instead of the tow. So now I'll always have at least 2 lithium jumpers at all times. I plan on getting a supercap version later down the road (as the technology advances - and gets cheaper), but I think a lithium jumper is still needed for a backup, since the supercap won't save from a 0V battery.
However, on the 0V battery issue, one thing to MAKE SURE about is if it has a 'FORCE START' button or feature! Very, *VERY* important!! Since finding the HOMPOW (V2) unit to have that feature, I've come to find that my older DBPower unit wasn't protecting me from a 0V battery. But fortunately, it still saved me from 2 tows despite that. It's now a feature that I will absolutely require of any future jump starters.
You can view the specific Project Farm video here, where he also tests out their purported claims: ruclips.net/video/bMXyoIBJyJA/видео.html

NOT about the repair, but I have a ranch with dozens of things with batteries. Even many cars, in addition I oncs owned a car lot. Long story short, had to jump many vehicles. For the past few year my favorite jump starter is the Autowit, just super capacitors no battery at all to charge or go bad. It's only limitations is long charge up times if the donor battery is very low and if the battery is totally dead. It won't detect it is even connected to a battery. I made a small attachment to connect a 9v battery to it to "see voltage" and discharge as intended. Obviously made sure it wouldn't backfeed and blow the 9v.

Project Farm, a RUclipsr who tests just about anything you can imagine (no sponsors) rated this Jumpstart #1 last year and basically a tie this year with a super capacitor jump starter. The thing would repeatedly start a cold diesel (Dodge Cummins) WITHOUT any help from a normal start battery. Basically, he had a wooden mock-up battery just to hold the battery leads in a safe manner. Anyway, the damn little thing is pretty impressive.
He did do an amperage measurement but I can't recall what it was but I think something around what a start battery would have, 8 or 900 amps.

Nice fix, after worrying about you getting capacitated with 2000A for 20 minutes.

Some performance lithium pouches do 100C,200C,300C discharge rates. They use the entire length of the electrode foil and/or thicker foil to achieve this. Also special chemistry secrets. Downside is lower capacity for same weight of a cell. Tesla's newest 'tabless' technology for cylindrical cells uses the entire length of the foil for a tab, folded over and touching each other, preventing current traveling the entire length of the foil and thus increasing amos decreasing heat. 4AH cell x 200C =800 A x 12.6V = 10kW

I enabled YT's closed captions hoping to get the technical tips at the end of the video, unfortunately all it gave me was "American".
