hey man, I stumbled on your channel on my YT feed so I decided to check your channel out and saw this particular video. Funny enough, I feel like I had a very similar experience.
I also had a Google software engineering internship but as a junior last summer in 2023 at the Kirkland, WA office. I shared the same feeling of being overwhelmed. I worked on accelerated data storage so my project also involved C++ and operating system topics like multi-threading. I remember being so confused looking at the C++ codebase (like understanding where certain info is propagated via smart pointers or how to set up correct unit testing) but I was so scared to ask any questions which definitely negatively affected my performance. I also suffered from depression which also made things worse. I really wanted the FTE return offer but it was clear by the end of the internship that I wasn't going to get it. I remember feeling so angry at myself as my roommates who were also interns said that their Staff engineer said they performed at an L4 level meanwhile I couldn't even perform at a decent intern level. Similar to your host/co-host, my host said that I definitely grew a lot over the 3 months as an engineer and as a person but unfortunately didn't meet the L3 performance bar. I currently have the exact sentiment that you described of wanting to rewrite a wrong but I do realize that I need to improve some fundamental aspects about myself first like building real confidence and a healthy mindset.
Great video man. You come across as a down to earth and chill individual. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, i would love to meet you in discord. You make me feel less alone. I may never get an opportunity to work for google again but this failure help me grow up and become a man. I think I’m a lot better than a lot of google engineers who got a return offer and job from Google because I have overcome more. I look up people who failed consistently but became champions by sheer perseverance.

The biggest L in my career is forgetting to add a feature/software that was important to my customer. This was an important feature and impacted the way they treated their patients. The process was convoluted until the feature/software was procured.

Similar story, procrastinating & not sending them details to apply for internship, thinking i was not worth it for the big tech company right from the start, after my time was up and i asked few of the members who worked there said, i 100% had a chance if i just asked, (lower skilled people got hired).
