"That's just waffle, what does that mean?" - please can we have this as a stock response to all the things politicians say? Haha
Matthew Lesh answered his question, but Jolly was hell bent on trying to demean him so didn't bother listening.
He asked Lesh when it has worked and Lesh said whenever you free up regulations, cut taxes, you get better prosperity. "That's just waffle." Eeerrr, no it isn't Jolly. Numerous countries have done and are doing it.
Shows the sad state of our journalism when a comedian pushes harder than any journalist does.
Could you people stop generalize journalists based on a few anchors and token journalists on tv? So cringe and false.
@@andreaskarlsson5251 Main stream journalism is universally awful, so the generalisation is true.
@@deanlowdon8381 Oh I see! Moving the goal post to something entirely different and then pretending you were right.
Pretty dishonest for someone complaining about journalists lol.
@@andreaskarlsson5251 How have I moved the goalposts?
@@deanlowdon8381If you dont see a difference between ssying "journalism" and your idea of "MSM journalism" (which differs depending on whom you ask) then I cant help you. 🤦♂️
'It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.' Upton Sinclair. 'Right-wing think-tank' - now, there's a contradiction in terms! On a par with 'sustainable growth'.
Excellent observation.
He's intelligent he knows how to take the working class to the cleaners and make himself rich, I now admire these people they know how the working class brain works. I made the mistake of fighting for socialism all my life, I was hated and threatened for arguing for social justice, I'm now hated for defending working class migrants. It's much easier to see the working class as a lower life form and not fight for them to have quality life, there should be no food banks, let them scavenge and eat out of wheelie bins, they love it,
@@DrMontagueDrMonty Surely it’s not a mistake to fight for a social way of life, especially for the people unable to make themselves heard , ‘ the trouble with being poor is that it takes up all you’re time , the trouble with being rich is it takes up everybody else’s time “ the ‘ have nothing’s “ in Britain’s society ain’t got the time to fight against injustice and inequality , as it was pointed out to Rees Mogg by Marina Purkass , ( hope that’s the correct spelling ) People are more worried about the cost of living than they are about Statues and Roald Dahl , Mogg was momentarily flummoxed ,
@@colinstephenson5386 Fight for social justice for the working class and they will protect the rich. Let me take an example of a couple of lowly paid presenters:
How much are Ant and Dec worth?
The net worth of the popular presenters is reported to be £62 million each.
They signed a £40 million three-year deal with ITV last year, according to The Sun.
The deal includes presenting family favourites like Britain’s Got Talent, I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and Saturday Night Takeaway.
This deal is expected to be worth £50 million but the exact amount is unknown.
Now if I was to suggest that they only need £2 million each to live on and the rest should go to the NHS and social care the poor would absolutely hate me, they would want to knock the shit out of me. This the working class mentality you are dealing with. Poor Ant and Dec you can't expect them to live on £2 million each. And in the big world of capitalism they are small fries.
Right Wing Think Tank is as clear an oxymoron as there is.
more like a right wing hard of thinking tank
A septic tank is an apt comparison.
How is libertarianism right wing. They support immigration lgbt etc
@@sigma_currynobody mentioned libertarianism?
@@sigma_currylmao since when? I've never seen a libertarian have a positive view of minorities.
Not to mention they're economically right wing, being capitalist arse lickers, and let's not forget the countless wars, fascist dictators, sanctions and coups that capitalist countries have sponsored, helped create or trained local governments to carry out agaisnt their own people for the sake of upholding business interests.
Reckon that's what libertarians want? I think it is.
"Without doing anything on the spending side" Did folks miss that? The tax cuts for the wealthy and for the mega-corporations would have been perfect and the economy would not have crashed if only Lettuce Liz had slashed the budgets for the NHS, the Police, for Social Care, for Education, and so on.
Vote Tory, you know it makes sense - if you're a multimillionare.
There are plenty of working class tories, they voted brexit, bojo and stabbed Corbyn in the back , they wanted brexit not socialism. Vote Tory starmer, you know it makes sense - if you're a multimillionare.
fkn sociopaths
Yes, that is exactly what they advocate.
To balance the budget Thatcher had 3.5% gdp of oil money globalisation asset stripping and free housing
Supply Side Trickle Down economics doesn't Work
No ifs

The ol’ playing possum aye! . . I particularly liked the notion that Britain was prosperous post Thatcher reforms! Not the Britain I lived in Sonny Jim.
Wasn't even prosperous in the south east ffs.
spot on mate thatcher and her gang of thieves stole all we owned and sold it to her pals in the city for next to nothing we were mugged, and then to take the piss they all became lord this and lady that what a bunch of mugs we were
They're not "think-tanks" they're lobbyists. It would be helpful if news outlets just referred to them as such.
What is the difference?
80s, 90s, 00s neoliberal "success" built on soaring personal debt levels, declining healthcare coverage - for much of the time - housing becoming unaffordable for generations and the banks going busts. Success
Exactly!
To them, it's fine, if any of us working class peasants did it, they'd call it money laundering,
Like chomsky said no social involvement for ordinary people under neo liberalism, all autonomous ecomic until but I reality plenty of social contact for those pushing for neo liberalism.
What has money laundering got to do with this? This is a case of influence-buying. Bribery.
The comment about prosperity & wealth created in the 80s under Thatcher is wrong.
People confuse the Thatcher years mislabelling it as a time for “ambition and aspiration” when it was clearly defined by “selfishness and greed”. Privatisation enabled the wealthy to get richer while millions lost their jobs (steel, water, telecom), creating inequality across the population and regions. Thatcher smashed local communities and squandered North Sea oil proceeds (compared to Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund)
Youd like David Eggertons The Rise and Fall of the British Nation. He backs you up with great stat's and he is a top source re creds.
I remember the interview with some of the people around thatcher after she was gone and how they explained they were asset stripping UK businesses and had deliberately conned her that they were making the economy more efficient whilst making huge sums for themselves.
It is simply sleeze dressed in a suit and tie!
Dom Joly should do more with politics. He grew up in it.
And he went to school with Bin Laden!
Or was that a lie? I keep forgetting which stories from Would I lie to you are true and which are false.
No thanx
A guide to UK Think Tanks by Novara is a fantastic idea. Demonstrating their influence on our democracy is vital, and it's essential for this to be more widely understood by the public.
Its a must! For what its worth I'd throw my inconsiderable weight behind that
This is such a good idea!
Yes! This should be a thing!
If a government think tank refuses to disclose its donors then it should be blacklisted, end of story.
I would love to see more of Dom Joly confronting politicians. Because of how they completely dismiss him, and figure that he'd not really know that much about politics as he's mostly known for being a comedian.
So many right-wing politicians have tried to take shots at him on social media, and telling him he should stick to comedy. When he not only is extremely intelligent, but spent a good chunk of his adult life focused on and involved in politics. He has a degree in politics, worked as a political producer at Westminster for ITN, and was a diplomat in Eastern Europe.
Channel 4 could easily give him a platform to have a role similar to say Jon Stewart in America, or Ian Hislop here in the UK. As could a major radio station like LBC.
Thankyou fir that info.
As a Jon Stewart and Ian Hislop fan I would love to see Dom Joly doing something similar. It’s desperately needed.
I didn’t realise he had a background. He’s two steps ahead of the lobbyist here, so that figures. Props to Dom.
So a 'think' tank is a funding & influence opacity filter.
A bit like the UK skirting sanctions by buying Russian oil via India, a political party can be 'influenced' by donors with a total lack of transparency, despite the law. Nice..
Yup, sounds like a work around to declared party funding to me.
It's also a one-stop policy shop where spineless creeps go to launder failed political policy. What better way to give bad, old policies the imprimatur of respectability and novelty?
_"It's not my bad policy idea which sounds bad, looks bad, has never, ever worked, anywhere and at any time, oh no. It's this great, wonderful policy idea which I discovered in this extremely erudite and well-argued report, recently issued by this House of Brainbox think tank."_
I hate the term "Think Tank". They do not think as they have preconceived ideas that they wish to push to government.
So in other words a think tank is a false way to validate claims of legitimacy. Because it's meant to be an independent group of thinkers (and whatever qualifies them as such) that looks at the best way to run an economy. And instead they get funded by all the comercial companies looking to make sure their product stays in mass production.
And funded by rich people
I thought right wing supporters supposed to stand with their beliefs? why are the sponsors so afraid of their profits going down?
Bring back democracy.
Bring in Marxism.
@@Joolsthejools is the same.

I thought the UK left the undemocratic and unelected EU, to be democratic and sovereign again. Are you saying Brexit was all a scam?
They aren't think tanks and shouldn't be called that. Lobbyists
After 13 years of austerity where is the benefits? Oh the rich got ultra rich and we all got pour.
You don't get "pour" you only get drips ....... from the Trickle Down nonsense. They expand their Reservoir - a few drips escape to reach the parched lips of the poor.
"Prosperity" due to being in the EU, free trade.
People are now "prosperous?"!!
I was trying to think of a way to make this meaningful to a member of the public like me and here goes….. If someone puts in planning permission ( for an extension on their house or whatever) and I want to support or object, I must have my letter (email) with my name published on the local council website. If I want to influence millions of people without anyone knowing, I just have to fund a think tank!
Old Ned Flanders is getting a little hot under the collar there - good job Dom!
It took me a while to recognise "Steve Wright in the afternoon" moonlighting.
For a stupidly long time, I wondered why James Meadway had a telescope.
🤣
😂
Where, on TV, can i see these "left-wing think-tanks" that he speaks of?
Very telling that he felt "attacked" by Dom Jolly asking questions. He didn't raise his voice he let the bloke answer, omg ATTACKED! Pathetic.
the real reason they dont list their funders is because then people would understand why their advice is swayed by their funders.
Somehow if something is paid by taxes its “good” but if its funded voluntarily its “bad”.
@@sigma_curry There is a difference between been funded by companies , organisations that have an agenda, and funding that doesnt try and sway results in their favour, you cant be trusted if you hide funders because your scared people will see you have been bought or swayed.
"We were fully behind Liz Truss up until the point the entire country realised even the lettuce would make a better Prime Minister, then we decided we were no longer fully behind her......

Thatcher had oil money and sold of the Utilities cheap, Thatcher had two recessions. The single market was a good thing but we are not in that now. Most UK growth in the early 90 is from people borrowing more money and cheap Chinese goods. Thatcher and right wing policies have completely failed.
Wont somebody think of the mega corporations 😪

By far my favourite part of this clip is when the stooge says “that’s supremely offensive!” and Dom Joly says “thank you”. He takes it as a compliment, as all comics should such a remark.
What a strange and peculiar person this think tank guy is...and not in a good way.
I remember the thatcher's 80's and 90's and it's continuation unde her prodigy Blair and the prosperity that this guy talks about existed in the main only for the gangsters in the city and other oligarchs.
Dom Jolly suits this role, its worth watching seeing somebody press like this rather than let these people just infiltrate the minds of the public
Nice to see young Dom piling in...he's a good lad really. Perhaps not so well-versed in the whole Keynes - Hayek dialectic but I hope we see more of the boy puncturing pompous Tories and stink tanks on our screens soon.
He's not that young......
He may not be a politician or an economist, but he's a comedian, which requires that he be able to read people, and he spotted the BS coming a mile away.
The time of “relative prosperity “ the rep from institutional economic masquerade mentioned was during labour term
Ban all Thick Tanks or send to Ukraine 😂😂😂
I find politics utterly depressing.
how nice it is to say "that's exactly what I'm saying"

It seemed that everyone glossed over the "The period after Thatchers reforms were very good" wasn't that when the UK joined the EU ?
A criminal backing bigger criminals:- iea
Thatcher was good?
Irish population disagrees.
To paraphrase Betty Davis, we should never speak ill of the dead, we should only speak good. Thatcher is dead, good.
I can't believe the IEA after messing up so badly don't sit down and shut the dirty mouth for a little bit until we've all forgotten a terrible ideas.
Love you guys at Novara !!!
Yes I can recall the prosperity of the nineties in the north of UK! Money was everywhere!!! Unemployment? Wow, couldn’t believe the choice we had!!!!!!
I detect a note of irony there and you're right - Thatcher's "economic boom", if it existed, certainly didn't reach us on Tyneside.
I spent far too long there wondering why James Meadway was using a mic that wasn't plugged in until I realised there's a tiny USB connector in the corner.
I heard this live on lbc. The iea stain looks EXACTLY like I imagined he might.
Right behind you as long as you fund me doesn't matter what you believe or want.
Dom was wrong. The funders of the IEA don't pay them to say whatever they want. They pay them because they *already say those things*. The funding just helps the thinktank to prioritise their campaigns. They are paid to give an air of academic legitimacy to views that would have no legitimacy if the funders simply said it themselves. But people don't work at thinktanks that don't align with their own views already.
Hahaha what nonsense.
@@darrenconlon4538 What I've described is literally how thinktanks work. Have a read of Jane Meyer's book Dark Money. She talks about American thinktanks but they are the same.

Are there suddenly lots of Australian super capitalists?
They’ve always existed, but normally have stayed within their own borders
"If I speak super quickly, don't stop for breath and just carry on speaking.... maybe, just maybe they'll think I'm intelligent and not see through my waffling!" WRONG!!!
Not sure about the economic boom post Thatcher, but the largest period of economic growth in the US had a top tier tax rate of around 90%...
I seriously don't understand why these Tufton group think tanks are even given air time? UNLESS THEY COME CLEAN ON SPONSORS.
They voted for David Cameron"s austerity because the Labour Party nearly bankrupt the country,
voted for brexit hoping for change,
voted for Theresa May because the media gaslighted Jeremy Corbyn's smears,
voted for Boris Johnson to get brexit done,
supported Liz Truss because Rishi Sunak was indian 😂
The question should be "why are you here?" yes they exist and are opaque about their funding, but why are they platformed by the BBC day in, day out?
privacy seems to only protect coporations - individuals never seem to get the same deal
The guy from the IEA just kept making noises, without actually saying anything of substance. He could easily be a Tory politician.
The think tank guy is so on the ropes here 😂
Mussolini politics & he was a joke with flashie black shirts.
How many times can they be wrong while pushing the belief they are correct.
That guy really believes in it.
Seems like his life depends on it so I get why

This is amazing! Just what we need ❤
Novara...that well known, highly respected purveyor of balanced views. And Dom Jolly...well where do we start??!!
Babbling like he was drowning in a think tank.
“Start using that great brain we keep hearing about”
Very good
I already dislike this man, he thinks Thatcher did good things with the economy and peoples freedoms. She destroyed most of the country so a few could prosper, her policies and police forces took away many rights from those that weren't her type, basically those poorer than average or skilled and unskilled workers in towns that relied on industries she destroyed for ever or even worse sold off to a few individuals and they mostly shipped either the work or the profits abroad.
And yet, with all of this, after 13 years -
No-one wants to talk about corporate money in politics
Oh well, ...
So..she throws out a few big names out of thin air, with no evidence. And she calls it a win. Wat a joke
Right is right left is wrong
I wonder how much donations come from the City of London?
Starmer is already pushing austerity and cosying up to big business at ordinary peoples detriment
Totally off topic but I’m loving this new hair style! It’s really nice 🥰
