This is the easy part of the job. If you have never done a headliner removal before, allow like two days for removal and prep on MK5/6, you need to take your time. The fucking front is a beast! I finally got mine out today prepped and doing this part tomorrow. Can't wait to get it back in, the Alcantara I bought is going to look beautiful! Also wrapping the pillars but probably only the A pillars this time and return to the B and C. Need to figure out how to work the B pillars and its a 2 door so the C pillars need the panels removed where the doors would be and those have to come out for a stereo install and do them then.
This is no joke, I've been working on mine for three days, and the new fabric's not even on it yet. Get ready to have your car out of commission or be ready to drive it some quite deconstructed. The sunroof and the front by the windshield gave me a lot of trouble, vacuuming up all that rotten foam dust everywhere, and I'm sure the c-pillar is going to be a pain on my GTI during the re-install.
That Video was absolutely the very best that's ever been made. Thanks for caring enough to make this Video for us people who can't afford to take it to the shop. Your Good people.
THANK YOU SOOO SOOO SOOO MUCH!! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST INFORMATIVE DYI VIDEOS OUT THERE AND, YES, ONE DOES HAVE TO HAVE SOME KNOW-HOW, but headliners are tricky and this was 100% helpful, Vince
This is the most detailed video that I've found. Thank you for mentioning those sunroof clips! They gave me hours of hassle because my service manual and a bunch of how to videos don't mention them. My GTI's headliner also has a lot of sound deadening foam to work around. Nice to see VW's over-complicated over-engineering uncensored, definitely better than leaving out steps.
Great Video ! My son and I replaced the headliner in our 2013 GTI. Your instruction was spot on. We had one error, around the sunroof, where I got a bit crazy with the razor blade but overall came out great. Thank You!
2011 gti headliner was looking like a nightmare decided to do it my self since I’m a cheap mofo and was bored the hard part is the handles everything came out smooth . Follow this video to success 👍🏼👌🏼 I will be adding starlights to it now
Thanks Man. That was Great! - Restoring my Daughter's first car (2008 GTI) because she does not want to give it up ; Can't blame her. Actually had no idea I needed to let the glue dry!!! Glad you mentioned that. I am about to start !!!!! :-O Wish me luck; AND love the Land Rover!!! Learned to drive in a 1970s Base model Land Rover at age 12. Want one, one day.
Thanks for the tips brother, I'm getting ready to do this job myself. Your video put the whole process into perspective. Now if I could only find the right headliner fabric on Amazon...
One quick question (if anyone can suggest…): Does all of the glue need to be removed BEFORE applying the new glue? Will the old glue have a bad effect? AND, if it does need to be removed, is sandpaper a good suggestion? Thank you! V
I own a 2013 VW GTI and would like to do this myself now seeing your video. I want the material close to the original color as possible. Can you please tell me specifically what type of material you used and where I can purchase it? Also I would have to use the 3M. Do you let it dry as well?
I purchased mine on Amazon. I thought my interior on my GTI was black, but now that I looked more closely, it's "charcoal". Black would have been too dark. Headliner Magic and Headliner Doctor both carry it. I'm using 3M too, it says to apply it between 30 seconds to 15 minutes while it is "aggressively tacky", I'm guessing humidity and temperature affect it too. The most important part at getting it to stick is removing all of the old foam and glue residue.
You can find a local distributor in just about any town. GTI and GLI use a color Called ebony. There is three shades of black. Though it looks a dark charcoal it’s really not.
Did you have to remove the old adhesive? I removed all the foam on my headliner and not it’s jsut feels all tacky. I was wondering if it’s needed to remove the old adhesive
After you've dry brushed as much of the foam off as you can, I used a couple of tablespoons of Tide in about a pint of warm water and a nylon scrub brush. Then rinsed the soap off with the garden hose. It's drying in the sun today on my patio table, it'll be 92°F today, so it should dry thoroughly in the sun. I removed the wiring harness for the cabin lights btw, it's just taped on. New glue won't stick to old glue and foam, I learned that from the mistake I made with my Beetle.
How much do you charge for that exact job? I have a mk6 gti and the headliner is toast, but the actual shell is perfect. I am located in San Antonio surprisingly!
Alright not gonna lie. Great video. Actually if you are prior service I owe you a beer. If you were a Marine I owe you a case. Seriously. You laid it out Barney style. I salvaged my ugly ass gti roof cause of you. I also know why you didnt have a video showing how to remove the the liner itself. For that lll get you 3 cement mixer shots. Seriously I ran out of fucks to give after I broke my 10th up. Still good shit.
For the Pillars you mention removing the backing foam from the liner - Is there a trick to this or is it just a matter of peeling it of by hand ? - Thanks
So I used a hard scrub brush and got all the foam off. Is the residual glue from the factory ok? It looks like you left it there too especially on the sides.
I scrubbed mine off with some diluted Tide, a nylon dish brush, then rinsed. I used a cleaning toothbrush for the parts around the sunroof. Let it dry in the sun. It's not good to get it wet repeatedly, but I'm sure never doing this project again on this car. Tide strangely works better than Dawn. No more tacky residue.
@@jessicah3450 thanks for the advice! Yeah I didn't want to get it wet, nor sand until the material begins to loosen up. To me a solid surface to adhere to is just that, another solid surface. Amazon pushed back my order so I have time to test it out before trying it. No foam just residual solid glue.
I just got my headliner out of my 2011 Jetta. To get it out without a lot of bending , is to drop the headliner. Lay the seats back and slide the driver seat forward. The headliner will come out the drivers side rear door EASY!!!! I hope this helps someone. I couldn’t find the info anywhere on line
Anthony Hector a lot of mk5 have a front folding passenger seat. That seems to help a lot as well. The other easy option is to remove the passenger seat.
Thank you very much for the thorough explanation and honest estimate of cost.
Dude. Awesome video. I am no longer afraid to diy my sagging mk6 headliner. Much props.

great video i am ready to tackle it. My only question is where did you get your fabric?
Very helpful my dude, probably 70% of all mk5 and mk6 gti's have this problem
Recovered mine in a mk5 gt tdi...Looks factory fresh....so easy to do with info from this video......cheers ........boom shaka lak

will be doing this, this week. fingers crossed

Could you post a link from where to buy the material for the headline?
Great video, Do you know where I could buy headliner fabric for a standard golf mk6?
Amazon or Ebay, or directly from an upholstery shop, they usually sell it by the yard.
What would this job cost today? I’m near San Antonio with the same golf.
Really a great job! What measurements should the new cloth have? 1.8x2.2 meters? 1,9x2,4 meters?
Headliner material is normally 60” wide and you will need 2-3 yards. If you have a sunroof buy 3 yards
Wish I had this video when I replaced my headliner. Did an OK job but I think I could have gotten it perfect from this information!
Thanks for the tips brother, I'm getting ready to do this job myself. Your video put the whole process into perspective. Now if I could only find the right headliner fabric on Amazon...
when he said "doing actual work in the shop" I could feel the shade being thrown at the other people working there lmao
where is a good place to buy this matching fabric for 2012 gti black same one your doing i dont want to over pa on the diy materials?
One quick question (if anyone can suggest…): Does all of the glue need to be removed BEFORE applying the new glue? Will the old glue have a bad effect? AND, if it does need to be removed, is sandpaper a good suggestion? Thank you! V
Very good, detailed, and professional! Thx!
Hello I have a 2011 vw mk6 gti how many yards u recommend to buy ?
Porsche pronounced correctly... nice to hear!
Great video 👍Thank you for making the vid . could you drop a link for upholstery . I have a VW MK4 JETTA that is need of a make over.

I feel like I can handle it, thanks to you. I really did not want to pay >$500. Thanks!
Decent work and very explanatory 👌
San Antonio?? Shit how much would you charge for mk6 golf? No sunroof
Wonderful video
Nice video. Thanks for your help. Did you do a video on how to cover the sunroof shade?
Loowie P I will make sure to do one.
Great info for an old fart. Great job. One of the best.
Would this work the same if I tried to do a suede headliner. And if so should I use less adhesive and what’s you’re experience with suede stretch.
Thank you so much man, really useful.
Did you have to remove the old adhesive? I removed all the foam on my headliner and not it’s jsut feels all tacky. I was wondering if it’s needed to remove the old adhesive
mundeyn I usually just take a clean rag and wipe off as much of the adhesive as possible. But it will always be sticky

Howdy. Call the shop and speak with Harrison. He can get you a price.

How many yards of fabric did you use for the headliner? I'm thinking of doing mine as a DIY, great explanation and tips. Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Three yards will usually cover the headliner and the sunroof shade.
@@m4autorestoration Thanks. I appreciate the advice.
Nice content, Patrick.

Score a line in the foam down the the material and peel it off

Hey josh. So yes there will be glue left over. As long as all the foam is off the headliner you are good to go
For removing old foam I use a drill mounted carpet brush.
Great video
Anyone try Alcantara or suede on an MKvi GTI?
Also how many yards for a mk6 jetta would I need for headliner and all pillars
Measure them
"That's what 3M stands for.. 3× more expensive" 😂😂💀
how many yards do I need?
Do you know the approximate dimensions of the fabric?
The fabric is 60” wide You will
Need 3 yards for a car that has a sunroof
Buddy can I apply the glue with a brush?
Not recommended on large areas. You can buy aerosol contact adhesive that works pretty well.
@@m4autorestoration thanks👍
What about using fabric that’s not technically headliner but has like a design or texture too it
As long as the fabric is thick enough not allow the glue to seep though and it stretches at least in one direction you should be fine.
